Connecting, using a parallel cable, win98 and winxp
Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 4:02 pm
Posted by Sarah Coast (25 messages posted)

I tried it using both systems as server and as client, but i can't get it to work. I think i'm missing something important. Description: I need to get some files out of a broke down 100mhz running win98 first edition, fully updated. I need to get those files into a laptop running winxp home. The only way to connect them (as i saw it) was through the LPT1 plug. But there always seems to be a bit of incompatibility. When using the 100mhz as the client, i used direct cable connection and set up a host net connection on windows xp When using the laptop as a the client i did exactly the same except for seting the connection as the host. I also tried using the net configuration assistant from winxp; that tried to configure win98 on it's own (i had to pass it via a disc). I also tried it using two programs, fastlynx, and paraben's pc linker but they all seem not to connect. note: I donīt think the cable is mal functioning or broken. Anyone's done this before? I really need the detailed know-how. Thanx in advanced

Jmc gave a good link for interconnections on the windows98 forum. Have you tried to email the required information as an attatchment? Works for me, and is much less stressful.

You said "parallel cable" - I take it as laplink cable; NOT the cable for parallel
port printer, you also need the laplink software.

Hi, I am doing the same thing & at least got the file transfer part to work. If you didn't buy a cable that is specifically designed for connecting 2 PC's (like a laplink cable), then you need to buy & use a "null modem" adapter (I got mine @ Radio Shack) to get this to work ... Cheers, Ben

Hi Ben and others, I have followed directions EXACTLY from http://www.lpt.com/Support/DCC-SetUp/dcc-setup.htm on how to connect my laptop that uses Windows XP as a guest to my HP home computer that uses Windows 98 as a host. (This is PART IV of their directions.) Is there something that these instructions are not telling that keeps me from successful connection? I am using a parallel cable designed to connect two computers to exchange 2-way data. I activate my HOST (win98) to listen and my GUEST (win XP) to connect. My host shows "is guest computer on?" and my guest computer says that the host is not responding. I want to transfer files from my HOST to my GUEST because my HOST doesn't have a CD burner. I would be so grateful if you or anyone would go the web page URL above and see if there is a detail in one of the settings that I should tweak. Thanks so much. Dan ( LandoLutz@aol.com)

You could not have described better, what I have been going through the past two days. I have made this connection successfully from a win95 laptop (guest) to a win 98 (host) machine many times in the past. My XP laptop connection is not working. The only thing I have found to explain this is a comment in XPHELP that states that the parallel cable connection works with Win 2000 and XP. It doesn't say win98 will not work but does not inclued it in the comment.

This is not working neither between one desktop and one laptop running both XP professional!!!

Since yesterday I am tired of trying it out to get them working. I thought that the cable was out of order even though I bought it yesterday! The lapton is a hp omnibook PII runnning windows xp while the desktop is a "nobody" PIII. As a matter of fact, when I restarted after plugging the cable in, the desktop installed automatically a "modem" called direct cable between two computers configured to work on port COM1. I could not change this to work on LPT1. However, I tried it on COM1 even if it is stupid, it did not work. After that, I tried installing a Direct Parallel cable since it was an option in the standard modem installation alternatives. Problem is there is no port to install it on!!! More, I let the cable installed on COMI and I set as parameters that the connection use either COM1 or LPT1. It did not work either. I am quite desperate!!!

sorry not to replying anymore to this i finally managed to solve my problem the hard way (and the only way that would work). I connected via network. I had to buy a new cable for it, since i didn't know there were two types of cables. But that way is sure to work, just set your tcp/ip protocol to 192.168.0.1 on one computer and 192.168.0.2. i'm not sure about it, but perhaps you need also to set an user account on each computer for a computer to access the other. (running winxp and win98 i did not need it). but probably not, you just have more likely do define your shares. i didn't have any luck with the parallel cable.

he/she isnt talking about "laplink" "laplink" is a brand name like saying he didnt get shoes he got nikes. i am also having problems connecting my laptop win98 to my desktop XP Pro, using a PARALLEL cable, the one that plugs into the PARALLEL port, does anyone know how to fix this problem? or is it even possible to connect the two, i figured it might not be since win98 uses FAT32 file system and win2000+ uses NTFS which arent compatable but i figured the xp machine should still be able to connect and retrieve data from the win98 host. ive tried serial cables and now have tried using the parallel, ive downloaded heaps of connection software none of which work and am now out of ideas any help?

There are many configurations of parallel cables; they can be wired differently and look identical. You need an INTERLINK cable as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;142324 If you're not sure what you have, test it with an ohm meter. If you're using a serial cable, it must be the null-modem variety. (some of the connections are switched) You can supposedly use a USB cable too.

Okay, I've been trying this for about 3 hours now...I can get the two WinXP Computers
to make the connection and connect at 115.2 KB/sec over a serial port on COM 1...the
computer I'm writing on right now is the host and the other is just an older WinXP
box I want to take files from...they're connected but I can't map network drives
or get anything to show up in Network neihborhood....additionally...I have the user
account on that computer setup on this one so I'm not just some guest with no rights...I'm
an admin connected and still on either computer I see nothing...hear nothing...I
can ping either computer...I've tried switching them up as host and client...I've
tried booting this multi-boot system down into win98 to get it to work...because
I used to use this cable between two Win98 Machines...why is WinXP Being such a retard?

I too am having problems. My host computer uses windows xp. I have a laptop that I need to fix and need to have internet access to it. It only has a dialup modem on it, and I only have ethernet and a 4 port router.

On the back of my router it has a printer port and the same with the laptop. so I tried that. it wouldnt work. So I plugged the laptop into the back of my pc to see if I could get it to read that way, no go. I have tried every setting. The laptop uses windows 98. its a 199 MHz Compaq Armada 7730MT. I need help please. if anyone can email me, plz do at xxd347hxx@comcast.net

Hi! I've been using an win 98 Notebook to transfer files via parallel direct cable connection from a cnc lathe running win 95. I can't get it to work under win xp. It says "connection established at 4 Mbit". So far, so good, but how do i transfer any files ?? On win 98, Explorer would pop up displaying the connected drives, but how can i do this in xp?

I have 2 XP pc's, I tried connecting through the parallel port and it was successful,
connected at 4Mb.. However, I so far am unable to see any files on either pc from
the other, I've tried both host/guest w\ either pc, no difference, I've made folders
and drives shared but in my network places on the guest (older pc) under Entire Network
it showed Microsoft Windows Network and w\ in that it has MsHome, click it and after
several seconds of waiting it said I did not have permission to access ....

It also said this on the host pc, but as far as I can tell neither pc has any special
requirements to access one or the other.. The connection is made, folders are shareable,
both pc's belong to the same workgroup Mshome so ..

The other odd thing is, the host pc (newer), under my network places, shows all of
my shared folders and drives w\ its "computer name" beside them, as if when the connection
between the 2 machines is made, the host pc now has access to its own shared folders/drives
in my network places, instead of those of the other machine, this is confusing...

On the guest pc theres nothing but a few listed "networks" in my network places such as "microsoft windows network" for which in it is "Mshome" but nothing beyond that, just the access permission issue ... Could someone offer a speedy suggestion on what I may need to do to rectify this, Thank You.

Altho old forum of 2002, turns up first in my Google search of 2008 -so I thought
to see if this helps....

Currently at link
http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles%2F2004%2Fs1501%2F08s01%2F08s01.asp
Found magazine article from 'Smart Computing' (Use Direct Cable Connection To Share
Files Across PC, Jan. 2004) that suggests DCC (Direct Cable Connection), a free Win98
Utility. DCC is included with Win98, but it is not part of the default installation.
For Win98 to XP it also suggests going to http://support.microsoft.com for Article
814981 - which appears to be in eight parts...

Good descriptive 'Hardware 101' info as well about direct cabling hardware and the
ports. Suggests using parallel to parallel port connective cable and tells you why.
I am going to try it - I have a perfectly fine HP Pavilion celeron running Win98
2nd ed. 4.10.2222 A with from what I can tell the last of the support updates that
will ever be available, with 7 years worth of files on it. BUT its now 2008 and
MS 'requires' me to use newer Win OS and don't feel Win Vista is ready, plus need
more room because each 'new' MS OS needs a zillion times more hardware power. So,
as interim solution, making Win XP Pro on used IBM ThinkCentre as my primary PC,
and want to move some of my MS Office, Outlook, and photo/art files from the HP to
the IBM - and hopefully use the HP as another 'archive' server on a hardwired network
for awhile.....and I don't want to screw around with zip or USB flash drives since
many of the old files I may never need, but I want to be able to get them quickly
if I find I need them. Eventually I may have $$ to buy external drives (or more
zip disks or flash) and make the time to review and archive it all-but I want the
flexibility and be able to 'transition' at my own pace.
Wish me luck, and I will report back on how it goes!

I'm checking out these laplink cables, ; null modem adapters, and 98 converters, also the norton commander with the link option, that sounds the best, but i will try the microsoft.com site as well as the site listed on smartcomputing.com, when i figure out which one worked the best, i'll give details! 1st option -> file transfer - I only have 350 MB to transfer, the rest of the stuff I don't need cause I have Vista now. Thanks for all the great info.
