I have a question about Share an Internet Connection:

i have to 2 computers and i use the the connection type : cable modem to hub , and then all other computers are connected to a hub , so that i dont need a host computer , and my computers are always directly connected to internet , but the problem is : when 2 computers are powered on at the same time , only one connects to internet ,, why is that problem caused ?? And , as long as one computer is shut down , the other - whichever that might be - connects to the internet ... can someone help me with this problem .

You can't use a hub to distribute an IP to multiple computers, you need to use a
DSL/Cable router that implements network address translation. What that means is
your ISP gives you one IP address, say 157.209.72.202, and only one computer at a
time can use it.... while the cable router will instead assign each computer a private
IP, directing traffic through ports....
Anyway, get a cable switch.... they're only like $50 now.

You CAN still use your hub for the two computers, only that you will then have to get a sceonf IP address from your ISP. This will cost you more per month. Go with the above reply, and get yourself a router. It will be cheaper in the long run.

Ok so if you have a router and want winxp to work with win 98 computers on the same network and share files and printers and all that, how do we do that?? Every forum I look at get really close to the answer and then trows in something like use the xp pc as a host with ics which is crappy unless you dedicate a pc to it. Otherwise, you have to worry about crashing a connection somewhere in the house everytime you try to reboot. I got a real cool laptop with xp here, need a network solution

Well, I have a similar connection like yours. Currently I only use 1 computer to go online while the other have to wait. I have read that using internet connection sharing (ICS) might work, but I haven't tried. If 1 computer is online, ICS is used to connect the second computer, if only 1 goes online then is no problem, but if more than 2 computers in the LAN , then a router might be considered in the future for my setup. I will inform you once I have sucesfully configured the ICS.

I bought a Belkin router at CompUsa for $59. and it was simple to set up. You don't need your software that comes with your DSL modem. Both computers are on and it and seems like i'm getting better speed. About 3 seconds after i hit internet explorer i'm conected.......you won't regret it.

All u need to do is put a second network card in and and connect to your hub. put all other computers on the hub and assign the new network card a fixed ip address and then setup your internet browser to got to that ip and away u go. $15 fix

If you do that you will be connecting your other computers through that first one, so will have to keep it running always so you can get connected whenever you want from the other computers. ....on the long run...more expensive than $15, plus that is crapy solution!

With what your suggesting ..why use the hub at all when he/she is only connecting 2 computers. just use 2 net cards in one computer, one for output to the other computer. -buy a router is my suggestion.

I have a hub, and you say that you cant assign multiple IPs with a hub, therefore only one computer may be on the internet at once. But is it not possible to go through your DNS and change the settings, allowing your DNS to assign seperate IPs for each computer? What im trying to do is hook up my computer and my gaming console to the internet simultaneously. Is this possible? If so, how can i do it?
