AUTORUN does not work, special circumstances, please read!

(6 messages posted)
I found the following article (and this website) searching for help but to no avail
Turn
Off the CD-ROM Autorun:
Perhaps someone can help me, as you know I cannot get the autorun feature to work
on my XP Pro machine. I cannot try system restore because I do not know when the
problem started, but the more I think about it the more I'm convinced it was 6 months
ago or more (because I typically disable autorun on a fresh install.) Recently,
I need it enabled to test an autorun.inf for a cd I am creating with some specialized
software.
By the way, autorun does seem to work for a USB hard disk that I have, but not for
my CD-ROM drives nor will it work for a floppy drive (of course after I edited a
registry setting to enable floppy autorun support.)
Here is what I've tried:
1. My Computer > Right Click CD-ROM Drive > Properties > AutoPlay
2. Device Manager > Properties of CD-ROM Drive (no option in those pages as with
previous Windows versions.)
3. Regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom > Autorun
REG_DWORD value is enabled (set to 1)
4. Regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom > AutorunAlwaysDisable
REG_MULTI_SZ value does not list my CD-ROMs in the list nor does it list any similar
drive types (this is correct)
5. Regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
> the NoDriveAutoRun REG_BINARY value is set to all 0's.
6. Regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
> I reset the NoDriveTypeAutoRun REG_DWORD value back to it's default of hex 95 (149
decimal).
7. Tried TweakUI on a whim, it says that autorun is enabled.
8. Consulted wall with head. Wall didn't have an answer. Head hurt.
What am I missing?!
One more slight observation: Windows does read the autorun.inf on cd's, but will
not execute the program with the open= statement. I know that Windows sees the autorun.inf
because it's reading the icon= statement and showing the icon on the CD that is specified,
instead of the default drive icon (in My Computer.)
Also before anyone asks, I have tried this with multiple CD's that I know for a fact
autorun works on (because I've tried them on my other box) even tried one of those
irritating AOL CD's that I comes in the mail and I usually throw away. I would just
use my other box to test my autorun.inf (well ok, I am doing just that) but I want
to know why I can't get it to work on *this* box, I don't like having a problem that
doesn't seem to have a solution.
Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks ahead of time!

I forgot to mention one thing just in case anyone asks. When I right click on the
CDROM drive in My Computer, the Autoplay option is NOT there at all, I just have
Open (default), Explore, etc........

I'm going to bet you also went to safe mode, uninstalled the cdrom drivers in device
manager, rebooted, and let Windows redetect/reinstalled the drivers.
I'm also going to bet you checked the properties of the secondary IDE channel (IDE/ATAPI
devices) in device manager.
Oh, and I'm sure you also tried cold-booting to a cd (OS, Restore?) from a shut down
state...right?
OK, if none of that worked, just for kicks, try resetting your BIOS defaults (kinda
hokey, I know). Since you've already proved it ain't the cd's, the other options
are the CD drive itself, or Windows. I'm leaning toward Windows. Just a guess,
though.
Hope this helps.

Assuming AutoRun is the same as AutoPlay, I believe the service "Shell Hardware Detection"
must be on and set to automatic. Is yours?

I tried those things, actually I didn't try removing the device drivers until I read
your message but no luck. Yes, the CD boots (I have a DOS menu at boot on this cd
I'm working on and I had already been testing it before I tried autorun.) Also,
I still use the old term autorun but autoplay is I guess the accepted terminology
now, (like directory and folder, I found myself starting to say folder this year
instead of directory on occation, and I despise that, but most people wouldn't know
what I was talking about if I didn't.) I won't reset my BIOS defaults :| firm on
that, I've got so many options in my BIOS to tweak if I do I would pull my brains
out, but I can tell you that I remember autorun has worked on my system at ONE point
in time or another, (whereas those BIOS settings haven't been changed since I built
this box.) Thanks for your suggestions.

I do use Nero 5.5.9.9, and I can remember it complaining that autorun was enabled
a while back, but I checked and can't find a setting within Nero to re-enable it.
After reading your message, I checked again, still couldn't find a clue within Nero's
configuration. I used the Nero Info Tool and it reports that autorun IS enabled
on my drives, (hmm, but it doesn't ever pop up a warning when I try to burn, as it
did before.) I checked a few Nero registry settings to no avail, and just now uninstalled
Nero and rebooted. Still no luck :( but thanks for your suggestion.

problem solved!
I didn't even think to search for other instances other than the documented locations...

I had one wicked looking key under HKEY_USERS\ with the NoDriveTypeAutoRun option,

Had the same problem. Windows XP Home suddenly stopped autorunning any CD or DVD.
Trying to find a fix on the Microsoft site, I found an article about Office 2000

I uninstalled Office and autorun works fine now.
Has anybody got a fix for XP autorun when Office 2000 is installed as I would still

Not too familiar with registry....How do I change the hex #?
Thanks!;-D

Since he hasn't replied to the fix, and I needed it, I decided to look up that registry
value (NoDriveTypeAutorun).
He stated his was at B5 which disables autorun. Mine was apparently set to 91, the
value which is used to test autorun on floppy disks.
I recommend creating a backup of the registry before modifying it.
Open up regedit (Start -> Run -> regedit).
To backup, go to file -> export
Then go to edit, and select Find. Type in NoDriveTypeAutorun. The default value is
95, which is the value for autorun to be enabled. Right click to modify it (make
sure to keep the value in Hex). Then hit F3 and modify every instance of the NoDriveTypeAutorun.
Exit regedit and reboot.

I'm not sure about the fix described in the last post... but here's what I found...
My autorun wasn't working. I found this place and read all the posts. I checked the
value about "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" and mine is set to 91. This actually means that
you don't want to have autorun for the floppies... I haven't changed that value.
I have found another fix... or rather another value in the registry that needs editing...
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
The value for "Autorun" needs to be dword: 1... Mine was set to 0. I just reset that
and rebooted and my autorun (autoplay or however you want to call it) is now working
without problems.

[This is only a post for my friend.]
Try this solution if you got the same problem.
Fix CD Auto-Run function
Step by step (Don't worry, these are safe actions, just stop it when you can't handle,
and call me -_-'')
1. Ctrl + R
2. Type in "regedit"
3. Select "我的電腦" (My Computer) at the top left conner
4. Right click and select "匯出" (Export)
5. Enter any file name, and REMEMBER where did you save it!! You may need this file
when you failed to fix the problem.
(step 3-4 is only for backup, trust me... this does not hurt your pc, backup is
just a right thing to do at any time!)
6. Press F3 key
7. Enter "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" <--- of coz no "" qoutes...
8. Then it will find out a blue (or any other colours... I'm not sure...) icon named
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun" at the right column
9. !!!! (usually auto-highlighted)
10. Press Delete key and select YES / OK to delete it
11. Repeat [Step 6,8,9,10] until it say sthg like "End of Search"
12. Reboot your computer and take out a CD to try it!
13. Doesn't work? CALL ME! -.-'' (for friend only...)

All your ideas have been valid and useful, but the one I found at the very end was
to locate the NoDriveTypeAutorun and simply delete the value (it was set as ff which
disables all drives), find it as follows: HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

A friendly thanks for all the info here

Thanks to all of you that contributed to this issue. I am happy to report that I
can once again play my favorite games that start with Autoplay.
I was having the same issues and did the following combination approach, based on
everyone's advice above:
1. Backed up registry (duh ;)
2. Followed June 27 step-by-step guide from Ali to remove all entries of "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"
(I had them all over with all different settings possible!). Rebooted. Still not
working.
3. Followed registry editing instructions in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -
330135. Also, uninstalled drivers for CDRW/DVDRW and Zip 250. Rebooted. Windows reinstalled
the drivers. FIXED!!!
So you know, I was using Xteq Systems X-Setup (which overall I think is an excellent
program and highly recommend!!). However, I think a setting (bug?) may have incorrectly
altered my registry and later changing the setting within X-Setup appartently didn't
do any good. Also, adjusting the AutoPlay settings in TweakUI didn't seem to have
any effect. I had to do it the "old fashioned" way...
Thanks again!
Mike

Here's what I did only after trying everything you did...the program XTEQ which you
tried as a last staw can fix your problem...Just open XTEQ and go down to where you
see SHARES CD-ROM/FLOPPY SHARES ACCESS okay now just UNCHECK deactivate CD ROM shares
when logged in also UNCHECK deativate floppy shares when logged in
Man I hope this works for you and if it does pls email me. chevis85@earthlink.net

Advice on enabling AutoRun.
I have recently encountered the same irritating problem.I have read numerous forums
to try and find out how to solve this.
At last I have solved the problem and now get the'Prompt for action'notification
when I insert a CD into my Drive.
I solved the problem by using Regedit on the software Tune up Utilities 2003
Search the registry for AutoRun-Set to 0x00000001
Search the registry for NoDriveAutoRun-Set to 0x00000001
Search the registry for NoDriveTypeAutoRun-Set to 0x00000095
Search the registry for CDRAutoRun-Set to 0x00000001
Use-REG_DWORD Value!
Enter either 1 or 95 as a HexaDecimal.
Hope this is of some help!
It worked for me,after several hours of trying to figure it out.
GOOD LUCK!

I finally figured out how to make my CD autoplay in Windows Media Player!
Start>All Programs>Set Program Access and Defaults>Custom>Expand.. and third
choice down is Windows Media Player. Place the "dot" in Windows Media Player and
close the window.
Now, pop in a CD in your drive and Windows Media Player should autoplay the CD
or the window which gives you choices should appear. Select Windows Media Player
and check the box below which says "Always do the Selected Action" and close
this window. Now, when I insert a music CD, Windows Media Player starts up and
plays it without any action on my part, just as it did before!
Of course I initially made the Registry changes which were suggested here in this
thread in another posting. These changes gave me the autoplay selections window but
Winbdows Media Player was NOT on the list. The above change placed Windows Media
Player ON the list so that I was able to select it. All is well in computer land
now!

Installing any part of Office 95 under XP also disables autorun/autoplay. But using
the Group Policy Editor solved the problem for me.
Unforuntately only applies to XP Professional, XP Home doesn't have the policy editor.
Start, Run, GPEDIT.MSC Computer Configuration, Administrative templates, System,
Turn off autoplay.
First disable CD autoplay completely in Windows XP Pro
1. Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
2. Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.
3. Locate the entry for Turn Autoplay Off and enable it.
4. Close Group Policy editor
5. Open it up again.
6. Disable Turn Autoplay Off
7. Close Group Policy editor again

Hope this solution helps out.

As of 8-29-04 This is the only solution I tried and it worked 100%.
If Autorun does not work in XP, here's the fix:
Run Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\
Explorer.
Delete the Key "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"
Reboot the Computer.
Thanks everyone!

Okay, I've had the same problem. All the sudden my auto run wouldn't work. I have
XP Home os. I think part of it is when I ran the XP service pack 2. I've tried
the register thing and so much more. I finally did a short cut on my desktop of
the drive. Right click and boom hit the autoplay. Much easier that going to my
computer....BUT it wasn't as good as putting the disk in and have the autoplay work,
RIGHT???? Okay, so did anyone else just load up the xp service pack 2??? I read
one post about Microsoft office/word etc 2000 and I thought hey, I'll try that.
Well sure enough, I removed the office 2000 and it works!!! Not that I really wanted
to replace this program, but my Outlook wont work on this computer, but works on
3 others I have, go figure. IF anyone else has loaded the new service pack 2 for
xp and suddenly has problems like these, I'm betting that's what caused it. Who
thinks Microsoft wants us to buy new software?????

I too checked all the solutions posted here and I can confirm that this solution
is the only one that worked for me. I had more than one entry of "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"
but I only had to remove the one mentioned and following a reboot all is good again!!!

I have a simpler solution. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c680a7b6-e8fa-45c4-a171-1b389cfacdad&DisplayLang=en
and download the AutoPlay Repair Wizard. Run it for each CD/DVD drive and voila!
Fixed the problem.

Restore default autorun settings for the affected drive
Saturday, February 12, 2005 at 4:50 am Posted by Immacolata

If your optical drive stops autorun when your cd or dvd discs are inserted you can
sometimes repair it simply by defaulting the autorun settings
Open My Computer
Select Properties for your drive.
Select Autorun tab and click Reset Defaults.
This will fix your problem if it was caused by a burner program or VMWare. They all
like to disable autorun and auto insert notification.

A previous CD-RW/DVD "death" had been repaired by the AutoPlay Wizard. On the second
death, I downloaded a driver repair tool called "XP_CDDVDFIX.EXE" created by Doug
Knox and available at http://www.dougknox.com/ (Go to "Win XP Fixes," look in the
right-hand column for "Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer.") That fixed my problem.
But then, while playing a CD on Media Player (blech), my AVG AntiVirus began an update
and--ZAP!--no more AutoPlay or nothing. I ran the AutoPlay Wizard and got two unrepairable
problems: Legacy AutoPlay and Autoplay V2. I tinkered for almost 20 hours, (reviewed
EVERY message here, too) but finally found a solution: AVG sometimes encounters bugs
with Roxio Easy CD Creator. I upgraded Easy CD 5 (available at www.roxio.com), then
deleted all instances of AVG from all user accounts on my computer. My CD-RW/DVD
drive (a Teac 28W) recovered. Then I downloaded a new version of AVG, installed it
and I'm back to normal. [Next week, I dump Windows for Linux. Time to step up to
an OS that is built to work, not to give me work.]

After hours of searching, reading, trying I came upon a simple solution that I must
have missed. It was not discovered by MS AutoPlay fix.
Here's a snippet that'll do the work:
4. Verify that the Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged on user only option is
not turned on.
a. Click Start, click Run, in the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
c. In the right pane, under Data, if the value for allocatecdroms is 0, go to step
5.
d. In the right pane, under Data, if the value for allocatecdroms is 1, right-click
allocatecdroms, and then click Modify.
e. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
f. Quit Registry Editor.

Hi
I had the exact problem with autorun. I have tried everything listed above. The way
I FIXED it was to reload windows XP from scratch. Then I loaded disks 1 by 1 to check
what caused the problem. I ended up finding that DVD43 (an de-encryption program)
was to blame. You don't have to uninstall it to get autorun to work all you have
to do is right-click the system tray icon and close it. I tell you what I tried everything
above and this was the only thing that worked.

It's a software problem !
Friday, June 17, 2005 at 9:32 pm Posted by Larry

The problem is being caused by a program that has disabled Autoplay Wizard.
As far as the CD / DVD, I would suspect Roxio, Nero, or some other similar CD software
is affecting Autoplay. Try to think of any programs, like these, that you have recently
installed.
If it is a camera not opening with autoplay, I would suspect Real Player 10 as being
the real culprit.
In fact it may be possible that Real Player 10's settings may be affecting the CD/DVD
Autoplay also.
In any case it is definetly a software program that has conflicted with Autoplay.
It's just a matter of finding the program . Try to think of any program installations
or upgrades that you performed around the time of Autoplay not working.
Curious...if you share your computer, do the other users have the same Autoplay problem?
Try logging on as a guest, and check Autoplay.
Is Autoplay only disabled on your desktop?
This will prove that some application you installed is disabling Autoplay. Find it,
but check Real Player 10 first.(Check the link below) It was my problem, and could
be yours.
Hope this helps.

AUTORUN -partially- works now...
Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at 8:40 am Posted by Sam Smith
(3 messages posted)
Autorun used to work fine on my PC after I reinstalled XP 2 months ago.
Then I intentially disabled it using GPEDIT.MSC based on the recommendation of a
security website on hardening your system against hacking (see http://labmice.techtarget.com/articles/winxpsecuritychecklist.htm
in the "Advanced Security Settings" section).
Later, I decided that I wanted the functionality back, and that it was not that much
of a security risk for me. So I tried to undo the change using GPEDIT.MSC. No dice.
I then started searching the web, and tried several of the win registry hacks, and
those too all failed. Then I downloaded the AutoFix.exe utility from The Beast,
and this time it found a registry setting error that I had not bothered to try, the
infamous NoDriveTypeAutoRun setting.
The result of running AutoFix.exe is that now when I insert a music cd (either a
normal audio cd or simply a data one that is full of mp3 files) that now WMP automatically
starts up and begins playing the first track.
So far, so good.
However, if I insert a program installation CD--one that has a Autorun.inf file on
it that specifies to launch the associated Setup.exe file that is also on the root
dir of the CD--then instead of correctly running the Setup.exe file, what it does
instead is bring up a new folder window which displays all of the files on the CD.
Bizarre.
Has anyone else seen this problem and have any idea of a fix?

follow the simple instructions in the program.'
This download from Microsoft has fixed the problem, for me at least!

I just faced the same problem, and the problem did turn out to be software in my
case, even though I originally bet it was registry settings.
I spent two days reinstalling from scratch, and hit the same CDROM autorun problem
after upgrading my Olympus DSS voice recorder software to "Version 6" from "Version
2002" from the official Olympus support site. In my case (probably not common -
doubt too many folks have voice recorders), I suspect the new "Device Detector" component
that looks for plugged in USB voice recorders/drives was screwing something up.
So, if you are having CDROM autoplay/autorun problems, I'd definitely do all the
AutoFix.exe and registry checks described in these threads, and look skeptically
on CD burning software, but also look for "new media" storage devices like portable
media players and voice recorders.
I would have never found this without reinstalling software step-by-step, but that's
a painfully brute force path of diagnosis, I know...

Man, this thread spans like 3 years. Well, I just came across the problem myself.
However, I've tried some of the fixes mentioned but to no avail. I am not sure
if the problem is the same as other users. Whenever I insert an autorun CD, it doesn't
autorun. It use to have the autoplay menu pop-up, but now it's disappeared. And
when I double click on the the CD drive, the "Open With" box pops up. I can only
access it by right clicking and selecting "Open". Any suggestions. I suspect the
program that caused this was ContextEdit because it started happening after I installed
that. It must have changed or deleted some of registry settings.

Replying to a message 2 1/2 years old, but chevis's solution (below) works. I tried
absolutely everything else suggested in this thread (and elsewhere). The relevant
control CDROM/Floppy Shares Access is now found in XTEQ-Pro under /Network/Security/Shares/.
Untick 'Deactivate' in both relevant places.
It would be good to know what changes this makes in the registry or elsewhere.

I am having problems with autorun not working also, and apparently this is a common
problem. So common that MS should have an easy fix, right?
I went through MS's fix for this problem step by step, the solution downloaded from
their knowledge base. I made all the registry checks, updated drivers and even the
drives' BIOS's. Nothing worked. I uninstalled Roxio 6.0 (MS says only versions 5.0
and earlier cause problems) and presto! Autorun on my DVD started working again.
On my CDROM, different story. It quit working about two months after I build my PC.
I uninstalled everything that could have been causing problem autorun not to work
(I suspect the SW bundled either with the CDROM drive, or with my Creative soundcard).
I finally fixed the CDROM by uninstalling the drive itself, and allowing Windows
to redetect it.
So two different fixes for two different drives.
Now the very OBVIOUS question: How do you get around the problem of SW like Nero
and Roxio disabling the autorun feature? Are there any other burning SW out there
that does NOT disable autorun? This is very annoying.

As for "resetting BIOS defaults". In that 'my' Sony VAIO has a "Phoenix Bios" and

WOW thanks!!
After having this issue on several different occasions after reformatting, i learnt
to live with this problem for the last year. By downloading what you said (the adaptec
site has been updated, but you can just go to www.adaptec.com and look for aspichk
which is also included if you you download the latest aspi driver 4.712). my discs
are now autoloading again. however, only the names and not the icons change. But
this is a major advancement none the less. So in conclusion thanks Paddy!!!

Solved an autorun problem on a CD I created
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 3:42 pm Posted by Ian

I had a problem with an autorun CD I was creating: It would open the cd as a folder.
This was strange, as it didn't do any of the other autorun things it should have
done (like ask me what I wanted to do with it).
The solution : The text editor I had used to create autorun.inf had saved it in its
default UTF-8 character encoding. It seems the windows autorun thingy doesn't know
how to read UTF-8. When I saved the file as ANSI, it autoruns perfectly.

It is amazing that so many people are having the same problem. I have tried all the
suggestions listed in this thread. The one that worked for me was going to http://www.adaptec.com/en-US
and using their search engine to find the the ASPI files needed to get my CD-ROM
drive to open the files when a disk is inserted. Search for Windows ASPI Package.
This was the solution that solve the similiar problem that I was having for an XP
system. Download the detection program and then download the install program if you
need these files. I guess the great mystery would be how they were deleted in the
first place. That auto fix was useless but at least it gave me an idea to search
for something and I stumbled accross these postings. Long live Windows and the ****
they put out. The disk writing software/wizard doesn't work anymore and it won't
write to a disk yet if I use RocordNow program it will write to CD disk.

It's a reg thing but none of these worked
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 4:21 pm Posted by stuartjk
(1 messages posted)
I've been through all of these settings and none of them worked. As a last resort,
I restored my registry to 3 weeks ago (i've installed some stuff since then so was
reluctant to do it). This fixed the problem and in fact sped up my machine somewhat.
I have made no software changes today, however this issue happened at 7.30 this evening.
I stuck a cd in (wind98 I think for a virtual machine), and when I ejected the disk,
the image on my computer did not update.
I rebooted the machine and then when I placed subsequent discs in, the image would
not update in My Computer again. It stated DVD/CD Drive (D:).
It is almost as if the update on CD's is being affected somehow.
New plan, back up registry every week. That could be a good general rule anyway

Go to Dougknox.com and download the fix under XP-Fixes that says Restore CD/DVD drives
to Explorer. I have tried EVERYTHING from here to China and this is the only thing
that worked!

Hey Gerard,
After reading all most of the stuff on this page and trying all the download fixes
and registry changes this one did the trick for me! Once I changed that 1 to a 0
everything was back to normal! Thanks a bunch! If you like blues and rock music please
check out my music page at www.wakeupandsmelltheblues. There you'll find a link to
my myspace page with more music. Just thought I'd offer some new music as a thanks!

for all you fella's with same problem of unbecoming autorun sickness..(lol)
just delete the NoDriveAutoRun entry in the registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
that shud fix it. it's is an unnecessary entry. might have been dumped there by a
virus or sumtin.
whateva the case is, just delete it.
worked severally 4 me.

BEWARE! After running this program from Dougknox.com BOTH my D: (CD) and E:\ (DVD)
DISAPPEARED from Windows Explorer. Also, when I went to the Device Manager, I noticed
that these drivers AND A FEW OTHERS are marked with a yellow-shaded question mark.
I deleted the drivers and restarted windows, hoping it would restore them back but
it did not happen.
What should I do now ?
Can anyone advise ?
Thx.

I am fairly sure that the fix from DougKnox did not cause your CD and DVD drive to
disappear from Windows device manager. Firstly, having cast my eye over the fix from
DougKnox, I can tell that if I applied it to my PC (which has a CD burner and a DVD
drive) it would have absolutely no effect whatsoever, because what the fix does is
just delete a few registry entries which do not appear on my (working) PC anyway,
so I think that is a red herring. The symptoms you indicated i.e. the device manager
was reporting a problem with the yellow shreiks against the CD/DVD drives, indicated
something more like it knew the drives ought to be there (because it was trying to
load the drivers for them) but could not see the drives connected to your system.
That might have indicated a hardware fault, or maybe the drives (or associated controller)
were disabled in your PC BIOS settings. Now, having de-installed the drivers and
rebooted, the system still cannot see the drives and thus cannot reload the drivers
for them automatically for you (as it should). I think you are looking at a different
type of problem. You said that there are yellow shrieks against other things in your
Device Manager - what are those? It might be a clue. Cheers. Spexx.
You are not paranoid. They really do have it in for
you.

Thx for your message but I know for sure that this happened right after I ran that
program and restarted my computer.
In order to "recover" the CD / DVD drives, I had to delete them INDIVIDUALLY from
the Device Manager list and, after clicking Add Hardware, windows reinstalled them
properly. They now show ok.
One of the yellow-shaded item was something to do with "Plug-and-Play". I deleted
it, hoping windows would do the same trick as with the drives but it simply disappeared
from the Device Manager all together.
This may or may not be related but I do not hear any sound from the loudspeakers
anymore. When I go to Sounds and Audio Device, the Volume tab shows "No Audio Device".
I wonder if someone could assist.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Well after reading this thread, this area really is a minefield.
I started with this a couple of weeks ago when I wanted to play an audio CD and discovered
that rather then just autoplaying, which it previously had done sometime in the past,
a folder window opened with the CD's file contents (.cda files in this case).
I checked the autoplay choices in the drive's properties and set it to play with
media player. On inseting the CD, it still just opens the folder window.
Having then searched various places and tried the autoplay fix wizard, to no avail,
I have tired some of the regiatry fixes on here, but not all as yet.
So far I havent fixed the problem. It seems no matter what I tweak, it still just
opens the folder. Its as if its detecting the CD insertion, but then not knowing
what to do so just opens the folder of drive contents. Its applying to DVD's too..
If I use TweakUI to turn off autoplay, it does turn off and then nothing happens
at all.
Running XP home with Sonic burning software which came pre installed. Autoplay definatlely
worked when the PC was new (4 years ago).
Any more thoughts. ?

re: AUTORUN does not work Posssible Solution found for Nero Starting with blank CD/DVD

I had the problem only when inserting a blank DVD or CD-autoplay did not run, but
Nero Express would start.
In doing a googe search I came across freeware Add / Remove Nero as AutoPlay Handler
1.0.0 from http://download.famouswhy.com/add___remove_nero_as_autoplay_handler/
I then added Nero dto autoplay and when I inserted a blank CD autoplay came up. I
also used Microsoft's autofix and when testing with it the autoplay window came up
and it said " Result [AutoPlay V2 Notification]: Problems {
Service (Silent)
Shell (Deaf) }
>> Repair << [Autoplay V2 Event]
Step: No steps to take.
Result: This AutoPlay setting cannot be fixed. Either the device is malfunctioning,
or the wizard cannot determine the problem.
>> Required action: The wizard found problems but cannot fix them -> None"

I also went into utility Startup Manager and disabled C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NeroCheck.exe
I think that Nero Express adds this as I noted that I have disabled it in the past.
