Question about 'Get Rid of the Unwanted Explorer Windows at Startup'

I have a question about Get Rid of the Unwanted Explorer Windows at Startup:

My computer crashed a few days while I was in my "My Documents" folder. Now everytime I boot up, it opens the "My Documents" folder. I can't seem to find where it's coming from, and the computer has been shut down normally several times since. I'm running Windows XP Pro. Any help? Thanks!

Msconfig has nothing in it about opening a folder. That will stop the things that in the Run & Runonce areas of the Registry and in the other boot files, but this is a result of a Window being "saved" so that it opens on any User that logs into the computer every boot. I have already scoured the known places in the Registry, tried Msconfig, checked computer management tools, played with the folder settings. I just can't get this window to close.

I have the same problem. Mine started after I repartitioned my drive with Partition Magic. Drive letters changed... and nothing had been the same... I'm still trying to figure out the unwanted explorer on startup - if you figure it out, let me know!

Installed Ad-Aware6 and now the Windows Explorer window containing that folder pops open at startup. My registry was fine at the point mentioned for the fix (XP Pro, sp1) Anyone got the same problem and a fix?? Thanks JB

I'm running Windows 2000, and when I log in as admin, a crapload of unwanted windows pops up. I looked in the registry, and the setting below was already present. I cannot shake this problem. I've toggled the NoSaveSettings variable and rebooted twice for each setting. I know this is a case of saving windows settings because no programs are executed under the Run or Startup options. What else can I do?

Use Explorer to navigate to your AdAware 6 folder. Double click the unregaaw.exe file. That will stop the folder opening on boot. Info from user forums on Lavasoft web site. You are welcome. Was bothering me as well.

I have the EXACT same problem as Carl - System32 popping up in my XP Pro (I noticed

The above fixes are not helping with this problem - Can anyone help, please?

Thanks,

In my case, this problem appeared after playing around with the software for my Creative Audigy sound card. The HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run section had an SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu key with the value of /L:ENG. Removing the key solved the explorer startup problem. HTH.

I have tried this reg fix on my Father in laws (Gulp) PC and really mashed it up! It's running windows 2000 and some time ago I set another reg key to make it logon automatically. Since making the reg fix to try and resolve the system32 folder issue it now logs on then trys to apply settings, applies settings then logs off, auto logs on again, applies settings and logs off... FOREVER! Any ideas on how i can break this Cycle! HELLLLP.... WorriedJim.

I've notified Creative about this obvious bug in their software, but so far they have refused to acknowledge their responsibility in this matter (much less offer a fix). They insist that this is Dell's problem because the Audigy 2 card was bundled with the Dell system. i.e., Its the usual "Tech NON-Support" team at Creative in their permanent denial mode. What I really want to know is where the errant Registry Key is *supposed* to be located.

I've had the same experience with Creative. Solid hardware with fair drivers and lousy tech support. To be fair though, Dell may alter the driver / app package that Creative OEM'd them. I haven't pursued this with Dell yet because I was only playing around with the Audigy software & mostly don't care if the bundled stuff works or not as long as the apps that use the hardware work properly. If I run across an answer, I'll certainly update this thread though.

Thank you one and all!!!!! I had the exact same problem. After I played with the Audigy 2 software, the next time, on start-up, the Systems32 folder kept popping up. Nothing that I that I did worked until I came across the solution here yesterday. I ran msconfig and unchecked the L:/ENG . . . item and problem solved. I also have a Dell that is only 3 months old with Win XP pro installed. Thanks, again. I never would have found this solution without this website. John P.

Make the con tent of the registry key this: "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\Program\Startup Menu\Audigy.EXE" /L:ENG Found it on a google search. Seems to have fixed my problem which was the same as yours (a la Dell computer)

Thank you all for your input. This finally got rid of the annoying System32 problem (also on a Dell with the Audigy 2 soundcard). One thing I found, which was entertaining--rather than delete the key, I replaced it with the new key. System32 did not appear, but the Audigy 2 welcome window did. I clicked the "do not show again" box and closed the window. When I then checked my registry, the key was totally gone--neither the original or the replacement were there. So I added the replacement key back in, restarted, and voila--there is the Audigy 2 welcome window again. This time, before I closed it, I checked the registry, and the key was there. I then checked the "do not show again" box and closed the window. I then closed and opened regedit again, and the key was gone. So I opened the Audigy 2 welcome window again (from the start menu), and closed, the opened, the registry again--the key was there again! So, basically, whenever you open the Audigy 2 welcome window (although why you would want to do that is beyond me), it adds the key back to the registry. As long as you check the "do not show again" box and close the window, the key disappears from the registry. Fun and games!!

OK you want to get rid of this? How to get rid of the system32 folder that pops up automatically when you log into your computer, windows XP anyways ... here you go: Open regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run and check the "DEFAULT" value, it SHOULD BE BLANK! Then check HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run and do the same thing, that "DEFAULT" value SHOULD BE BLANK please send me a note if this helped!! I'd be curious to see how many emails I get :) I think these are altered with a lot of HTML exploits if your computer hasn't been patched properly, or if some spyware gets into your machine. Good luck! (BTW: ad-aware and spybot RoCk)

Windows Explorer System32 on Startup - SB Audigy 2 installed

Great solution - thanks Bryan!!! There seem to be a lot of solutions to this problem, just thought I would post this message title to help anybody else searching for a solution. This may not be the solution required, if not - sorry, but it worked for me. Machine Spec: Dell with Windows XP & Creative SB Audigy - which seems to be the cause of the problem.

Dear all, removing the key mentioned below does not solve the problem permanently, because the key is recreated when the Creative SB Audigy 2 application runs in the future. The real reason is that the application has a bug, in that it inserts a "space" character before the key value which should be /L:ENG and not /L:ENG. I would guess that Creative should provide a correction to this bug. I am using Creative SB Audigy 2 on a Dell Dimension 8300 with WinXP and have the same problem. I will try to send a copy of this to Creative and Dell. Kind regards, ast@mip.sdu.dk

I had this problem with the ATI control panel not loading up. As it turns out ATI doesn't like the fact that when I installed the software I put it under the path "program files" ... it doesn't like the space. so I uninstalled the program, put it in the default C:\ATI\support folder and everything works great now.

Hi! Had the same problem caused by a motherboard monitoring program by ASUS - ASUS-probe. It was by deafault installed into C:\Program Files - folder (which btw isnt my true "program-files-folder" - its named just C:\Program). After that an explorer window with C:\Program apperared everytime i started windows. The problem was corrected by manual reinstall into C:\Program - folder. Hope this helps someone!

The problem is documented in MS...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086

A common user had the explorer with the system32 folder everytime he logs on.

In my case, the problem was located in the Default value of the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
key... for the local administrator.

To resolve the issue I had to Log on as the administrator and then use the regedit
tools to clean the bad registry value.

Problem resolved!

When you go into the 'startup' settings of 'msconfig' , look for "Explorer", untick it, apply and restart. That should fix it.

When I first get my computer or reinstall the software, it opens fine. After a while, for some reason, whenever I boot up the system, it starts fine but the C:\WINDOWS\System (not System32) folder always opens by itself. None of the above has worked. The commands in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run cannot contain spaces. When it does a Windows Explorer will popup and the directory will be the command cut of at 1st space. Change the settings so it doesn't contain spaces or place "" around the commands.

Hello all, if you get an Explorer window at login with the C:/Program folder on the desktop, one reason may be that you have (by accident?) created a folder named C:/Program. Very easily reproducible. Delete it, rename it or whatever. And reinstall programs or run regedit. Regards all Hans

I've tried most of the suggestions herer, I think(!). But whenever I logon my machine insists on opening "My Computer". I thought the message about having spaces in the entries for HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run would do it, but quite a lot DO have spaces (e.g. many starting with C:\Program Files...) However, enclosing these in quotes seems to have no effect. Any suggestions?

To answer my post, I finally tracked it down to SPMSMON.exe in the HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current_version\Run registry key. (http://castlecops.com/s10785-SPMSMON_EXE.html) Deleting this entry with Hijack This, seems to cure the problem. Not sure what it is supposed to do though, may be some sort of malware/spyware.

I found a fix for people who cannot figure what is causing the explorer window to
open. (I've had this problem a thousand times and never got stuck on it till now.)
This allows the window to open, then kills it for you.
I used this cool little freeware utility called nircmd.exe (available at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html).
I then made a batch file and placed it in the allusers/startmenu/startup folder.
I just put "nircmd.exe win close class "CabinetWClass"" in the batch file. If it
doesn't work try "nircmd.exe win close class "exploreWClass"" instead. Now when windows
starts, there is a quick flash of the explorer window opening and then this batchfile
pops up really quick and kills the explorer window and all is fine.

I just had to give credit where credit was due. Thanks Alex. I went into regedit and put quotes around every one of those Run items values. Any that had a space in their name, such as C:\Program Files\ I put quotes around. It started with an ATI Catalyst upgrade I think. I had to downgrade it(rollback driver), and maybe there was my initial problem. One explorer window on C:\ATI\Support was showing on every startup.
