Question about 'Dealing with Bad Memory (RAM)'

I have a question about Dealing with Bad Memory (RAM):

I was wondering is there a way to bypass a burnt out Dimm slot if the others are working? I would seem like a big waste of a motherboard if you can't do this.

Check your motherboard manual. If it needs the first slot filled and that one is non-functional, you throw the MB away. Most are like this. If you can use another slot and bypass one, your manual should tell you if it is possible. Most MBs need slots filled in a certian order. It has to do with how the BIOS addresses the memory. There are no switches or settings for this. Sorry.. C K

Most newer boards don't care which slot is used, BUT if it's actually burned, it implies that there are likely more serious problems and maybe there is additional damage. So if that works consider yourself lucky.

Yes there is!!! go to start Run type in msconfig and hit enter depending on what system you have find advanced button on first window or.. go to boot.ini and then advanced, =MaxMem select half the installed Ram (128 so enter 64) select apply, get out and reboot if it crashes less, your right its the Ram if not, fiddle with the other options such as PCI lock if you have trouble rebooting, press F8 on start up navigate to msconfig and restore the settings good luck Rob
