Status Bar in IE disappears

The status bar in Internet Explorer turns off whenever a new instance of IE is opened. It used to just shut itself off occasionally which I could deal with, but now I have to turn it back on whenever I start up IE. Is there some checkbox labeled "No, I didn't really want the status bar on. Please turn it off every time IE starts up" that I have yet to discover?

On my version of IE6 there is no "Folder Options" under the "Tools" menu, so I can't get beyond Step 6. Any ideas?

In step 4, it's referring to "Windows Explorer", not "Internet Explorer".. Basically the same as opening My Computer..Should do the trick, worked for me..I was getting really annoyed by this!

From Anetforums:

Start with one instance of IE. Select View | Status Bar. Now press Ctrl while clicking
the X in the upper-right-hand corner of the window to close the application. Next,
open My Computer and select View | Status Bar. Finally, go to Tools | Folder Options
and select the View tab. Click Apply to all folders, confirm the dialog, and then
close Windows Explorer.

NOW ...... start regedit (Run > regedit )

go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
select "Show_StatusBar"
go to 'Permissions...' from Edit menu
click 'Advanced'
find your user name in the list & click 'edit' button
put a check next to 'Set value' under 'Deny'

If you select "apply to all folders" wont that change any settings in other folders such as "view thumbnails" etc? I simply enabled the status bar and closed Windows Explorer via the File>Close menu selection and it now remains docked through subsequent closings and openings of it. Although, I have not yet re-booted I expect this to take care of the 'problem'.

This supposed fix does not work on my system. On each restart the status bar disappears. Has anyone else had luck with a solution?

I found that the above worked for me. I have noticed the status bar often being absent and then in later windows present. I had realised it is because when you *close* an Internet Explorer window, it saves the state of a window as being the default desired behaviour - and any number of sites (including this one) use popup windows with the status bar turned off. However, the fixes described above worked for me. Check you've followed every step listed.

I think that if you deny the Set Value to HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main > Show_StatusBar to the user/s who have this problem might do the trick. I hope that IE does'nt use the system account to set this value otherwise I have to deny it to the System and I hate messing with this godly account. [Akira]

copy the following 4 lines:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Show_StatusBar"="yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

and save to a file named for example "XP_IE_EnableStatusBar.reg".
(do this with Write saving into MS-DOS text format or Unicode format, and don't forget
to type in the extension. if you miss that, you might need to change folder preferences
to be able to change its default .TXT extension).

may it be easier if you should do this regularly.

I did all the tweaks, including the REGEDIT and setting the DENY flag. When I open an IE window, the status bar is present, but if I press Ctrl-N the new window has no status bar. Arggh!

One thing I found that seemed to work after all else failed: make sure that "Lock the Toolbars" is unchecked before you set the Status Bar on (checked). Then, if you like (I prefer them locked), set the "Lock the Toolbars".

Note that you should hold the CTRL key when you close. You should also be sure not to have other Internet OR Windows Explorer windows open when you do this.

I thought it could be fixed by turning it on (View->Status Bar) then exiting IE completely. Sure enough, that works. When you re-open IE, the status bar appears at the bottom. Try creating another IE window though and your status bar doesn't get created along with it. Argh. This went on for a week and then I had an idea. Microsoft has hugely integrated the abstractions and code behind folder windows, explorer windows and internet explorer windows. So, I opened up my C drive folder, turned on the Status Bar, then went to the Tools->Folder Options menu, then clicked on the View tab then finally clicked on the "Apply to All Folders" button. This effectively tells Windows to open all 'Folder' windows just like the one I am editing (which happens to have its status bar shown).

Ok! Thanks! I run WinXP Pro and this worked fine for me.

Lock the toolbar like it says and the open My Computer and "apply to all folders" - no need to hack the registry.

For what its worth, I had this problem (and only when I hit CTRL-N for a new window, NOT when I highlighted a link and opened in a new window), and followed the steps in the first post -- the fix worked as promised.

What is the significance of holding the Ctrl key when click the close button (upper

Ok, so SpyWare Doctor seems to only take care of the problem temporarily. It's either caused by IEPlugin or WinPage. Both are "medium" threats and deleted by SpyWare Doctor, but eventually appear again and cause the status bar to dissappear. Does anyone know how to take care of these permanently?

The last post was November-has anyone found a solution yet? I've had the same problem since I installed XP SP2, no status bar until I choose it from view, as soon as I click on a link it's gone again. I've tried every fix I could find but nothing is working. I also noticed at the same time this problem started, none of my windows will fully maximize unless I click on the max button in the upper right corner, every new window has about a 1/2" space at the bottom where I can see what's behind it. This is driving me crazy since the status bar is also not there!! Please help!!

*THE (more localized) FIX* FOR THE STATUS BAR DISAPPEARS ON NEW WINDOW PROBLEM Instead of resetting all folders & losing all your settings, try this... Open the Registry Editor (or if you're a computer newbie...DON'T!). Navigate to... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU ...look for the value of... NodeSlot ...(you want the number in parentheses, not the hex number before it)...in the left view, below BagMRU (where you are) is Bags, open it & start typing the number you found & the highlight will change to it, if that don't work, just scroll to it. Press F2 to rename it, add a - (dash) to the end of the number, so if it was 339 (what mine was) rename it to 339- then open IE & see if you get a status bar in a new window (if you don't...rename it back & continue smashing your head into the computer cuz another solution didn't work). I went thru *ALOT* of searching to find the bag responsible for the "new window don't have status bar, but the 1st window does" problem, after I got done & found mine was bag 339, I noticed the NodeSlot value right off of BagMRU, for some reason on mine it was the bag I needed, but I didn't know that at the time & didn't even notice BagMRU had a NodeSlot value until after I found the one I needed (I noticed it then because it was the number I spent FOREVER looking for, so it jumped out at me...& I was like *uck! it was right there the whole time!). This should only fix the problem I mentioned, the last guy said "as soon as I click on a link it's gone again." so it sounds like his problem isn't pressing Ctrl+N for a new window, but clicking on a javascript link that opens a new window, which on mine was always working, I pressed Ctrl+N, had no status bar, but ran javascript[:]open(location) (: {colon} changed to [:] {bracket colon bracket} to allow posting) & that got me a status bar (mine only started not working the same day I fixed it...the power to the computer went off while it was on & corrupted some things...I used system restore to go back to the last system checkpoint & was able to see IE's status bar working, I didn't know what reg key to save & take with me after I un-did the restore, so I un-did it anyway to see if that would fix it {it did on a previous error} then googled & found this about resetting all folders, so I re-restored & grabbed the entire ShellNoRoam from when it was working & un-did the restore again & started the hunt {I renamed the entire non-working ShellNoRoam & tried IE & it worked [& renamed it back & it stopped working again]...so I knew one of the Bags was the culprit}). If the links he's clicking are html target=_blank links, that might be more like the Ctrl+N & less like the javascript (...or not). But if he already tried to reset all folders & THAT didn't work, there's no reason this should either, both methods change this part of the registry, mine just localizes the change to only this key, instead of losing everything.

I went to edit and then modify and I changed it to yes, but when I closed that down and open IE it wasn't working. I went back to the regedit and it was still set to no. Someone pleasehelp! It is getting very annoying having to go to view-status bar! Thanks

by playing around with the registry stuff around the registry settings from other people, I sort of figured out how to fix this for all explorer windows without customizations. (note: i'll be calling both windows explorer and internet explorer by "explorer": technically, they are the same thing, anyway) you will be editing the registry: you will need some experience with editing the registry to do this. 1. browse to HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\shell\bagMRU (btw, if anyone uses "HKCU" with the registry, they're referring to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. "HKLM" is HKEY_CURRENT_MACHINE) 2. See what it says under NodeSlot in the right pane, and note the number in parentheses. I'm not entirely sure because i've only tested this on my own computer, but i'm guessing that the number should be "1." 3. Navigate to HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\shell\bags 4. look for the folder (on the left pane) that has the number you just noted (probably 1) and expand it. 5. navigate to the "desktop" folder under it, and change the "status" (on the right pane) to ffffffff. 6. navigate to HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\shellnoroam\bags and do steps 4-5 again Sorry if it doesn't work, I know I did a few more things before I actually did this fix so i'm not entirely certain if this is exactly everything you have to do to fix it. but i'm pretty sure that it involves a lot of the bagmru editing.

sorry the breaks aren't in there, but this stupid forum apparently has no idea how to parse a fcking line break into html.

So, I have what you might consider the opposite problem: When I start IE I always get the Status Bar like I want. However, if I try to go to full screen mode [F11], the Status Bar often persists when I don't want it. Doing an Alt-V and unchecking "Status Bar" eliminates the status bar, but then when I navigate to a new website, the Status Bar will typically reappear. Is this the same problem in reverse, or does it have a different solution?

Yep, I am having this problem with IE also. I want the status bar to be turned on for regular IE windows, which is working fine, but when I hit F11 for Theatre Mode, I get the status bar. If I press Alt-V and turn it off, it goes away for a while, but later on it reappears. Wondering if something on the website calls it back. Any suggestions? "

Karen,
    * Click Start button, select 'Run...', type 'RegEdit', & click 'OK'.
    * HKCU is 'HKey_Current_User'. You'll find this under 'My Computer' in Registry Editor.
    * The rest is self-explanatory.

To Jon & Ben,
Your problem might be due to a security change MS made to IE. Basically, depending
on your security settings, IE no longer trusts some web domains not specifically
listed in either Trusted or Intranet zones.
Go to Internet Options > Security, then to either Local Intranet > Advanced >
Sites, or to Trusted Sites > Sites. Enter the domain name in the URL box and click
'Add'. You may have to uncheck 'https'. This should allow the temporary turning
off of status bar on popups and Full Screen View in MSIE 6. IE 7 should be similar.
 Just turn on menus first.
If this is not the problem, please give more information.

I found that the below method worked, BUT that after restart it had broken again [so Ctrl+N for new window gave No status bar].

Looking in regedit revealed that there was simply a new folder to replace the one i'd renamed [so i'd renamed 28 to 28-, then there was just a new 28]

So I tried just setting the permissions for that folder [the new 28 folder] to Deny for both basic options. AND it worked perfectly, forcing new windows to have status bar. I've tried restarting it and it still works perfectly.

[It seems like it's very unlikely windows would change the permissions for the folder, but it's understandable that it would make a new folder if the one it's looking for is missing.]

Hope that helps,
EJ

I had the same problem, found an answer in

http://www.uninets.net/~blaisdel/whistler11.htm

and worked fine, still haven't restarted my machine, but have plenty of faith!!!, hahaha

Here's a description so you don't have to follow the link:

Open Regedit (Windows Key plus R to bring up the run dialog and then type, or copy and paste Regedit and then click OK)
Locate the following Registry key and sub keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
In the right hand pane, right click and choose New | DWORD
Name the new DWORD StatusBarOther
Once created, double click the new DWORD string and give it a value of (1). Should be:
StatusBarOther REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
Close the editor

From now on your Windows Explorer status bar will stay and behave itself.
