Question about ''Same Window'' vs. ''Own Window''
Thursday, October 24, 2002 at 8:05 am Posted by Jeff Schallenberg
(4 messages posted)
I have a question about "Same Window" vs. "Own Window" in the Explorer Tools\Folder
Options\General tab:
For a few days now, XP has been annoying me by opening new windows for each folder
I open. And this, even though I have selected "Open each folder in the same window".
My screen sure gets filled with folder windows fast!
Why would Windows be ignoring my display selection? Is there something I could correct
in the Registry? Should I remove Service Pack 1? Should I re-install Windows from
the CD-ROM?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Try this. Choose the view you want, go to Tools> View> click Apply to all folders.

Thanks for the suggestion, Siggy, but no, I had already tried that. It is as if my
installation of Windows has become "deaf" to the particular setting key that permits
"same window" folder display. That's why I am looking for a Registry tweak to cure
this!

I'm getting the same sort of problem.
After trying a tip in Personal Computer World - Jan2003, p187 - about closing a file
window whilst pressing CTRL (so as to switch to 'same window') the option to change
back using Folder Options--> General --> Browse Folders will not work, and I seem
to be stuck in 'Same window'

Lets try this again. My last post came up without my text!
Check the following settings:
Tools>Folder Options>General Tab="same window."
Tools>Folder Options>View Tab=Uncheck, "Launch folder windows in a seperate process."

I had two systems, 1 W2K and 1 XP Pro, that had the multiple window explorer problem.
The fix I found by looking at functioning OS PC's, was in the registry Folder key
under HK_Classes_Root
The problem seemed to be a lack of a ddeexec under both the explore and open subkeys.
This ddeexec key is used in several places in the registry. Search for ExploreFolder("%l
to find it. The l in the previous string is a lower case L.
Once a working ddeexec key is found, write down the data and add it to the explore
key in the Folder key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. There is a "Shell" key that contains
identical data. You can repeat this for the open key. It, however, uses a different
string, ViewFolder, in its ddeexec data string. You will see what is in the example
in the other registry key.
Once I got the ddeexec straightened out, my explorer proceeded to show new folders
in the same window. This proved to be a boon for my small laptop. Folders rapidly
choked up my small display.
Hope this helps others.
I put all this stuff into my Folder

This problem was driving me nuts. Here's the solution:
- run regedit
- select key [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell] in the tree at left
In the right pane, there's an entry named (Default), with some data set
(in my case, it was "open"). This one should be cleaned:
- right-click on the name (Default), choose Delete form the menu and confirm
That's it. Get out of regedit ASAP.

When i attempt to delete 'Default' it says "Unable to delete all specified values".

Hmm I'm not sure, but instead of deleting it, maybe you should set it to "None".

I was having the same problem. None of the solutions posted above worked for me either.
I read another solution elsewhere on the internet which worked for me, and will hopefully
work for you as well.
This idea involves, once again, messing with the registry. Go to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
The Data probably says "explore". Change it to "none" (Right click on "(Default)",
click "modify"...)
Important: This does not just mean leave the data blank. Actually TYPE IN the text
string "none" without the quotes.

Does anyone know why this happens?
It seems like it doesn't happen on all machines, and it also seems that it isn't
the default after setting up a machine. We've had other problems where "Search" becomes
the default behaviour when double-clicking a folder, which is also immensely annoying.
I don't want to install apps one at a time to figure which one causes this, so if
anyone knows what does cause it, let me know

I seem to be the only poor Bozo still suffering from this. I tried all the previous
suggestions, and still get a new window on every transition except from the C: drive
to the first folder. I tried looking at the Drive key in REGEDIT -- no joy. Pulled
out several keys with options in them,-- ditto. Does anybody have any other ideas?
Thanks!

It pays to read instructions carefully. I reviewed the messages above, and found
that I had glossed over the difference between HKLC/Folder and HKLC/Directory. I
made the change to the Directory/Open/shell key, and sanity has reasserted itself.
Bravo, guys!

Make sure that you put all of the text in the .reg file, including "Windows Registry
Editor Version 5.00" and everything under that.
You *could* manually enter everything, but you should not have to. You should be
able to make the .reg file and just double-click it to add the data to the Windows
registry.
If none of that works for you, I'm afraid it's beyond my knowledge.
Good luck.

It's very strange everything worked this time, open is there, but it still opens
a different window just for all folders.. The hard drive and all extensions of what
you are looking for have the same window. So now I am down to only 2 windows, but
does anyone have a solution for opening a Hard Drive in the same window??? Thanks

Not sure if this will work for you, but please try these. Create blank "Registration
Entries", copy and paste these text. Save your file and update your registry. Start
from here:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive]
@="Drive"
"EditFlags"=hex:d2,01,00,00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\DefaultIcon]
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]

Hi all,
It seems like everyone is finding a different fix for very similar problems here.
After going through the entire list of fixes supplied (many thanks guys, much appreciated
though none worked for me, unfortunately), I was still getting a search screen come
up in a new window when I double clicked on a drive, instead of it going straight
into exploring within the same window.
Looking at Budinbuzz's post, I had a go at tinkering in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive
area, rather than the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder and Directory areas, and this fixed
it for me.
I believe I cleared the \Drive\Shell\Find 'default' key to "(value not set)" by right-clicking
on 'default' and selecting 'delete'. Pretty sure it was that, but to be honest,
after spending the last four hours sat here scouring the net and beating my registry
with a plank with on-suite rusty nail, I didn't really expect much to work and wasn't
paying attention :p Anyway, here's how that part of my registry looks now:
\shell '(Default)' 'none'
\shell\find '(Default)' '(value not set)'
\shell\find\command '(Default)' '%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe'
\shell\Find\ddeexec '(Default)' '[FindFolder("%l",%I)]
\shell\Find\ddeexec\application '(Default)' 'Folders'
\shell\Find\ddeexec\topic '(Default)' 'AppProperties'
Hope that helps, it's not as complicated as I've somehow made it look :)

Thanks, It worked for me too. I'd been fighting all those windows and nothing worked
before. It just started with no reason.

Guys,
I found a quick solution that works wonders!
I compared the registry of 2 WINXP machines and came up with such solution.
First of all using your REGEDIT [backup your registry] browse to
\HKEY_CLASS_ROOT\Directory\Shell
check if you have a folder called FIND and one called OPEN.
The FIND folder should contain 2 subfolders [ Command and ddeexec].
Command should contain a key like this: %SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe
Ddeexex should have a key called [FindFolder("%l", %I)] and should also contain 2
subfolders called application and topic. Leave them alone.
If everything looks the same, go back and delete your Directory\shell\OPEN folder.
And voila' ... that's it.
Hope it works for you too! :-)

hello,
well, i got my folders (directories) to open in the same window but i still have
these annoying problems with clicking on 'my computer' and hard drives:
-when i click on 'my computer' the first window is the 'folders' view window (the
one with the directory tree panel on the left; or when the 'folders' icon in the
toolbar (beside 'search') is clicked on.)
-it also does that when i click on 'my documents', 'control panel' and 'printers
and faxes'
-then when i click on a drive in the right panel, it opens up in the same window,
still with the directory tree panel on the left. but then, when i click on a folder
from that drive in the right panel, a new window opens up, this time without the
directory tree panel on the left, instead its the details thing with '**** tasks'
'other places' and 'details'. that's the window that i want to open from the start.
-the details thing on the left panel is how i originally had it and its what im trying
to get back. just one window opening when i click on 'my computer' and just one
window remaining open when i click on other stuff. i hope i was able to explain
it properly. im obviously no good with proper names. any help would be really appreciated,
thanks.

Thank you so much for the solution(s); I fixed my problem. How many people suddenly
had this problem after experimenting with desktop shell replacements or enhancers
like LiteStep? That's how it happened to me - I've been doing some pretty intense
hacking in WinXP lately and this is how Billy Gates decided to punish me... but oh
well! It's fixed! Thanks again for the tips!

I think I followed the suggested fix below but each window still opens up a new window.
Under Folder\ Shell I have another folder named \shell; under that shell there are
two folders, one named \explore and the other named \open. explore has two folders
named \command and \ddeexec. \open has two folders named \command and \ddeexec.
I cleaned the default value that was in the topmost Shell folder. Was that the
right one?

Great! Finally a fix for this very annoying bug. I had already found 10 or so fixes
to this problem that did not work for me, but did for others. Apparantly, there are
many reasons why Windows will make the default action for a folder "open" instead
of "explore", without the possibility of changing that back in a normal way.
thanks a lot, allard

Force My Computer Desktop Icon To Open In Windows Explorer Mode
Many users find My Computer on the desktop to be a convenient starting point for
file operations. Clicking My Computer opens to a Task Pane view, which while gaining
wider acceptance, has yet to come close to overtaking the more widely accepted and
preferred Explorer view. To set the default so My Computer opens in Explorer view:
Launch My Computer > Tools > Folder Options... > File Types tab
Select the icon for (NONE) Folder and click the Advanced button
In the Actions List, select Explorer and click Set Default
Click OK and Close

After messing with the registry in more than half of the ways mentioned earlier,
I had it where I would end up a few windows deep before it started opening folders
in the same window. It was also showing the annoying tree on the left instead of
the tasks. So, even though I wanted just the opposite of the post I'm responding
to (i.e., I wanted the task, not explorer, on the left, I went to Tools -> Folder
Options -> File Types -> (NONE) Folder -> Advanced, and after messing with the registry
so much there APPEARED to be no default action set (neither open nor explore was
in bold). I set open to be the default action and this fixed everything! So even
if you've already done this... go back here after messing with the registry and re-set
open to default - it might work for you, too...

open in the same window.
Now what?

Sometimes, especialy if you have been toying with shell32.dll and such, the regestry
fix may not do the trick. Try this alternitive:
Open ANY folder, Go to Tools at the top, Select Folder Options. Go to the File Types
Tab, Find the Folder (it will have "(NONE)" as the extention. Select it and click
on Advanced. Now... Create a new Action, call it explore and give it the command
%SystemRoot%..Explorer.exe /e,/idlist,%I,%L
Set it as default. and you should be ok

All,
I am running XP with a regedit Version 5.1.
I too have grief as my "confuser" always opens a search pane when I click on a folder
to open it.
I went into regedit, hkey, folder etc but I do not have "Shell" there.
Once I've opened the "folder under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT it shows a .folder with another
folder called PersistantHandler
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!
rgs,
Howard
