Question about 'Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network'

I have a question about Connect
to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:
Here's the situation:
I have three computers, and one printer.
XP
ME w/printer
98se
All three are hooked up to a Netgear router sharing a cable-modem. All three are
able to access the internet with no problem.
98se and ME can see each other. 98se can use the printer on ME.
Neither 98se or ME can see XP, and XP can't see either of the other computers.
I can't figure out what i'm doing wrong. We can't connect the printer to any other
computer because of who uses which machine.
Any help would be appriciated.

Hi,
I'm sorry to say that I have a similar problem, so my reply will probably not be
of much help. But anyway:
We have two PC's
XP
Me w/printer
(and soon a laptop XP wich will probably have a wireless connection)
They are connected to the internet (ADSL) via a NAT router. Both can connect to internet
at the same time without any problem. But on the LAN they are invisible to each other.
Some say that the router is the problem, but I don't think so, because it should
work as a switch w/o any restrictions.
I've looked through the information on this site (and others) and it seems like the
different security functions in the O/S is the problem (most common tip). But(!),
I have followed every recomendation and tip regarding usernames, accounts etc., but
it does not help... (Maybe I should switch to XP on all PCs???)

There is information about how to network XP in a peer to peer environment at:

Without seeing how you configured your networking this is tough to determine from
the information given.
A quick idea might be that you simply have different workgroup names for the two
types of computers.

My workgroup names are the same (Workgroup).
After going through that website you gave, the only thing that doesn't make sense
to me is the very last part.
"The remote computer needs to have a user logged in with the same name and password
as a user account on the XP computer."
All three computers are used by different people in the household. They use them
for different things and thus have different user names.
Thanks for the help so far.

On the XP computer, create the user accounts with the same name and password as those
logging on to the other computers.

It still doesn't seem to be working. I've set up a user account on the XP with the
username being used to log into the ME, but the name being used on the ME is "default"
with no password.

Win XP doesn't like blank password. Try again with a password instead.

Hiya I was looking for into also btu this sounds like a case of one pc has a firewall
running, I know it sounds daft but disable firewall and try again. if their is a
prob with firewall u need to allow port 139 for netbios but their maybe a need to
enable other ports but least its a start.

A firewall was going to be my thought as well. If WinXP Service Pack 2 is running,
then that could certainly be the problem. XP-SP2 has a built in firewall that is
just dumb enough to be annoying, but just smart enough to be a pain. I suggest Zonelabs
'ZoneAlarm' firewall. There is a free version of this, and can be downloaded at www.zonelabs.com
. The XP firewall does not let you allow certain computers (or certain networks,
for that matter) to access the XP computer. This should be why only the XP system
is invisible.
Install ZoneAlarm. Once that is finished, you will need to add your home network
to the "Trusted Zone." Click "Firewall" on the left hand side, and (My suggestion)
move the "Trusted Zone Security" slider to Medium. This will allow sharing between
computers that are on the network you will add to this zone in just a moment. Next,
look for a "Zones" tab at the top right (under the Help button). Hopefully, there
will be a network listed already. If there is, then click on its line under the Zone
column and choose Trusted. If it is not listed, then click the 'Add' button at the
bottom, and choose 'IP Range.' This is where you will need to know (Assuming your
router is automatically assigning IP addresses) what IP addresses your router is
giving you. Another way to do it is to find out your own IP address (Start > Run
> cmd > ipconfig) then add that. For example, if your address is 192.168.0.3, then
in the first box listed as "IP Address," add 192.168.0.0, and in the second 192.168.0.254
. This will add your whole network to the Trusted zone. Make sure the box at the
top says "Trusted," add a description, and click "OK." Now, you should be able to
see each computer! Be sure to only add the network addresses INSIDE the router to
your trusted, or else you will end up with a bad case of the viruses and spyware
EASY.
Well, I hope that I helped. If anyone needs a little more help with this feel free
to email me.

I have an even stranger situation... I have 5 PC's all running XP Pro. All on same
Workgroup yada yada. Was running Shared internet Connection over dial-up through
Comp1, all connected through switch. Workgroup and Internet worked fine on all but
Comp4 which networked fine, but would not connect to shared connection. /// Had
Broadband installed-- disabled shared connection. Now use switch and router; Comp1,2,3,4
through switch, Comp5 to router, router connected to switch. Router as DHCP, all
systems dynamic IP. Now, Comp1,3,4,5 connect to both Internet and network, but Comp2
connects to Internet, but not network. I have tried the Network Setup Wizard several
times, to no avail. All 5 show in "view workgroup computers" 1,3,4,5 can interconnect,
but when 2 attempts to connect to any other, or any other attempts to connect to
2, recieve "May not have permission to view this network resource..." message. All
5 can ping each other and themselves with no errors. There is no change with all
firewalls up or down (win on all and Norton on 1,2,4). This has been the case with
no change for 3 weeks, even with trying. All of a sudden, this morning, Comp1 has
began acting identically to Comp2. ????????????? With no changes (that I am
aware of.) The one who used the system this morning would not have known how to
change anything anyway, and not inclined, nor had time.
My knowledge has been extremely surpassed and I am out of ideas.
