XP/DOS printing

A DOS app that previously printed OK under XP just stopped printing. The app and data files still print OK on Win98/other machines. Checked all XP settings and app seems totally ok. All other dos-app functions are fine on XP--just printing mysteriously went away. Finally-- other apps (Word docs) print ok on the machine. At wits end. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. JRS

Pure DOS apps that use their own printer drivers are not supposed to be able to print in XP. XP does not let those apps access resources directly, or at least that's what the MS line is anyway. Interesting that it even worked at all. They will however print on 9X systems just fine. Makes you wonder. Unfortunatly, I can't tell you why it stopped printing as I have not seen a true DOS app yet that would print in XP. There have been cases where an app could print to a file, (text) and then you could print the file on XP but that's as close as I have come. Finally, depending on the version of Word, it may not be a pure DOS version so it will print docs. Is it possible that your Apps aren't pure DOS applications? If they were released after 1995, they most likely aren't so they would probably print. If this is the case, we have to look elsewhere for the problem. More info would help, such as the App and version number or date of release.. C K

I have just experienced the same issue. Have Three DOS software programs that were fine yesterday. Today I can't get any of them to print reports. They calculate fine within the program but now will not print. I called Gateway and the only thing the tech came up with was to reload the dos software. I may try that but actually I did load some new dos application software and it did not work either. I am running on xp professional. I removed the HP printer driver and reloaded, no luck. All windows based programs are fine. Guess I'll have to rely on my laptop and bring out the docking station. It uses win 2000. Have my hardware/network gut coming out tomorrow

I've been doing some research and some experimentation. What I have found has been interesting. A pure "dos" program will NOT print in XP. The reason is that a DOS program needs low level hardware access which is not allowed in XP for stability reasons. A DOS program is supposed to supply it's own printer driver for the specific printer which again, is not allowed. However there are some programs that run in a DOS environment and were modified it seems, to use the windows print system to access the printer or to do a crude form of access to it. Some print correctly, some don't and some do for a while and then stop for unknown reasons. There is always a "reason" but code is so massive that one may never find out exactly why. In those cases, it has been easier to restore a backup install image of XP to resolve the problem or damage done to some files or to the system. The bottom line is that if you have a 16 bit or hybrid 16/32 bit program, don't run it on XP. Update the program if possible, or as I do, have XP installed on one HD and Win 9x on another one. I have swappable hard drive bays installed in a 5 1/4" CD ROM slots and all I do is swap them (hard drive bay trays) when I need to. As MS will stop supporting 9X soon (even updating or releasing service patches) it would be time to seriously consider updating if at all possible. There are more tools to get DOS programs to run in XP but non of them promise to be able to provide print services. If you do solve the problem please post back as there are many, many people who would like to know the answer. Regards.. C K

I to am having problems with this. Unfortuatenly I can't even get the printer to work from an MS-DOS prompt from within WinXP Pro, with a simple "copy test.txt lpt1:". It spools the file, and says it's printing, but it never does. I have the same issue on Win2K. Any ideas?

I experience the same problem. Interestingly, the rest of the output is printed as soon as the DOS application is finished. This might be a hint to solve the problem?

I solved my problem by changing the LPT timeout in the registry. Start regedit.exe Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control WOW LPT_timeout reduce timeout value from 15 to 5 seconds OK

I've got XP pro & could not get any DOS apps. to print until I found a program called DOSPRN, cost $14.95, but you can download the demo version for free, but it has their logo in the background when you print, this progam seems to print great in XP for DOS!

I am a seasoned (some say Luddite) user of Lotus 123v2.3 for DOS. I have years' worth of complex applications created with this software. I've been successfully running it in a DOS window on Windows 95 & 98 systems (printing included). Last week my primary machine shot craps...and I replaced it with a new machine running XP. I was unable to even get my Lotus to install from its original floppy disks. In desperation, I removed my hard drive from the crapped out Win98 machine and installed it as a 2nd (slave) hard drive in my new XP machine. Lo & behold...my DOS version of Lotus 123 loads properly, and my spreadsheet applications load, and macros execute properly, and it does file creation and saving tasks properly. AND it prints, properly formatted and paginated (Wk1/Fmt files), to my HP printer! One problem, however...the Lotus 123, when accessed on my new system (which is booted with XP) does not access any more than about 650kb of memory...no extended or expanded memory is recognized or apparently available to it...and large spreadsheets bump up against the available memory limit. Can anyone suggest a way to make more of my machine's 512mg of RAM available to my DOS version of Lotus 123? I will appreciate any and all suggestons. THANKS

get memmaker [came with 98se] and its associated support files.. they'll fit on a diskette. make a win98se boot disk and reboot your system using it. once at the dos prompt, create a directory: md c:\memory and copy the contents of the memmaker diskette to the c:\memory directory. from that directory run memmaker and tell it to make ems available for apps along with windows say ok to the prompts and reboot.. when you enter xp exit xp again.. you should get a blue/green screen asking if your computer seems to be operational, say yes look over the memory savings and happy trails. mix2plix
