I have a question about Help! My application doesn't work with or crashes Windows:

I have a Set Up (InstallShield created) program provided by a software developer, it runs ok in win 98 and Me but I have a computer with XP and the Set Up simply doesn´t work, i mean the machine do nothing when you run the SetUp running under XP. It is urgent to me to solve the problem please help.

Most Installshield Setup programs that I have tried to install under Windows XP hang at 50% of setup. These setups work on W2K. I am searching for a solution as well and will post here if I find one that works for me. I have visited the Installshield website, but it's not much help for end users .. just developers. Currently I am trying to install Acrobat Reader 5.1 that I just downloaded from the Adobe site and it hangs at the predictable 50% mark. Post back here if you find a solution first.

Check that your workstation service is started, if not, this will prevent the RPC locator from starting which will hang installshield. :}

Try to shut down the sysdlg32.exe task (Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Task Manager Window and look into the Process list). I had the same problem and now the installation runs fine. Be sure RPC locator is activated as well (Start->Control Panel->Admin.Tools->Services->right click on RPC locator->preferences->activate). If you find that shutting down sysdlg32.exe is not enough try to do the same thing with other tasks running under you user name. A.

Hi everybody, I also have this problem on XP when running (old) InstallShield programs. I think I've the solution... To make the setup start, try to shutdown the _isdel.exe task using the task manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL) under Process tab. It works everytime for me, so why not for you? Please mail me if my message solved your problem. Regards from France Maxime http://www.arachnosoft.com

This may be caused by programs requiring Administrator privileges. For me, opening the context menu on the installation program and selecting Run As..., choosing Administrator, worked fine.

I couldn't figure this thing out for hours until I read the post about turning workstation on. What I did was I changed workstation from being automatic to being manual. It's probably somewhere in between, but as soon as I did that my programs started loading fine.

Right click on the setup installation file, click properties, click on compatibility, check the box, set compatibility for win98/me or win NT (sp5), disable visual themes and advanced text features and then try to install. This often, but not always will allow the installation program to run properly. Also make sure you are logged on to XP as an administrator.

Thanks for your help. Here's what my problem WAS: On a Sony PCV-RZ46G desktop I was trying to install Adobe Acrobat 5, Photoshop 7, Illustrator 9 and Family Tree Maker 9. After clicking install for all four programs, the InstallShield Wizard would get to 99%, stop, and then just fade away, nothing was installed. When looking in Task Manager there were two applications (_ISDEL.exe and _ISN5576._MP) that were started during the install, but they wouldn't go away on there own so I had to stop them. I tried to stop them during the install process, but that didn't work. Here's what worked: I activated the RPC locator by going to Start->Control Panel->Admininstrative Tools->Services->right click on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator->Properties->Startup type->Automatic->OK, then restarted the computer. The programs installed fine thereafter. Todd

I had exactly the same of problem. The intallation of Photoshop stopped at 99% of the installshield wizard. Those solutions did not worked. But I found a solution at this adress : http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=q110648 The path to the temp file was to long. I changed it as they describe it, I restarted my computer and the problem was solved.

I am facin a similar issue: many installshield setup or install operations are just blocked. Unfortunately, none of the solutions posted under this thread did help in my case: - using another account does not help - %TEMP% is OK - workstation/RPClocator services are OK I am really lost: I already spent nights on that issue. I don't want to restart a whole PC installation because of this issue. Btw, in my case, I am wondering whether the WidComm (not MS) bluetooth setup could be involved in the issue. I had it uninstalled recentely and now, ...because of the issue, can not even consider to reinstall it.

Workaround was not the same for me:
the "System restore" facility was guilty.

Installshield was blocked when calling a method for setting a restore point.

Anyway, system restore itself was having some troubles.

My workaround was:
- purchasing of an external USB 2.0 harddrive
- regular backups using Symantec tools (DriveImage)
- disabling of XP's own system restore

Moreover, I have the impression that my PC is now going faster.

Hi,

I had the same problem on my Compaq WinXP system (Installshield hangs on 99% and
continued after some minutes or more). I tried all tips from above, but nothing helped.

But probably I had luck and found a solution: I removed the file GMT.exe from my
processes and the problem was solved. You can best remove this adware by spybot or
check on http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/180-p1.php.

Hope this will help some people.

I could not install any games. The programs would install to 99%, stop, and drop
me to the desktop. Nothing installed. I tried the following which did not work:

1) move install shield folder
2) reinstall install shield
3) remove registry keys
4) do a complete winxp system repair (not format and reinstall)

The final solution was this found below:

Hi guys, how are you? I just got the game, and was having the exact same problem,
using SP2, installation interruption, blah blah. Well, after a lot of research and
what not, I found that two services were disabled on my computer:

Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Distributed Link Tracking Client

Apparently, these two services have something to do with allowing a user account
access to certain directories, scripts, processes, etc. When they're disabled, it
appears as if the computer doesn't have all the information it needs to verify account
permissions. The two services above are dependant on these two services:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Security Accounts Manager

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) should be enabled by default, so you shouldn't need to
worry about it. To check the other services, go to the start menu, load the run dialog,
and enter "services.msc".

Here's what I did to get it all working:

Open the start menu
Open the run dialog
Type "services.msc" and hit enter
In the Services dialog, go down to "Security Accounts Manager" and see if its started.
If not, double-click it to load its properties. Set the startup type to "automatic,"
click "apply" then click "start." Once it's started, hit the "OK" button.
Go to "Distributed Link Tracking Client" and see if its started. If not, double-click
it to load its properties. Set the startup type to "automatic," click "apply" then
click "start." Once it's started, hit the "OK" button.
Go to "Distributed Transaction Coordinator" and see if its started. If not, double-click
it to load its properties. Set the startup type to "automatic," click "apply" then
click "start." Once it's started, hit the "OK" button.

The services need to be started in that order if they're disabled, or the Distributed
Transaction Coordinator won't start due to its dependencies not being loaded.

I'm unsure if this next bit is necessary, but I did it just in case:

Open the start menu
Open the run dialog
Type "dcomcnfg" and hit enter
Load the "Component Services" screen
Expand Component Services > Computer and go to properties on "My Computer" by right
clicking
Go to the "COM Security" tab
In the "Access Permissions" section of the dialog, click "Edit Default"
Make sure "SELF" has the proper permissions set to Allow, mainly "Local Access"

Once that's all done, close the dialogs and reboot the computer.

After I did all that, CotN installed perfectly and loaded fine with no problems at
all. I hope this helps!

Solution that is worth a try

Posted by Otto Lodewijk (2 messages posted)

Here is how I solved the problem (it is a very cruel way, but at least it works):

- First start the setup. Your system will be busy for a while, but then nothing seems
to happen.
- Look in Task Manager (press CTRL-ALT-DEL ) for your SETUP.EXE to be running.
(Note: Because you will be shutting down processes, you will then know immediately
if you shut down the correct process.)

The next steps will be a bit tricky, and are at your own risk. (They worked perfectly
on ~10 computers to which I have done this)

- You need to disable Norton AntiVirus (I had v2001)
  >> For your safety: Disable your Internet connection to prevent accidentally downloading
of viruses !!!
- Start Task Manager ( CTRL-ALT-DELETE)
- Shut down all possible other processes EXCEPT for:
  - svchost.exe > IMPORTANT: contains the services
  - vsmon.exe > ZoneAlarm, can't be shut down
  - csrss.exe > not sure, but it is a system process
  - lsass.exe > same as csrss.exe
  - services.exe > also some kind of service monitor
  - winlogon.exe > seems obvious...
  - the setup program of course > seems also obvious!
  - explorer.exe > responsible for your desktop
  - some others which you can't shut down

The other processes should be disabled one by one. Look for processes that you recognise
(such as emule.exe or msnmsgr.exe) , it is obvious that these don't have to be disabled.

But be careful: if you shut down too much, your system may work incorrectly.

If you shut down some processes (Normally I have more than 70 running) you can also
notice your system will be running considerably faster!

Eventually this SHOULD work. If it works: finish your install first. After that,
whether you have installed sucessfully or not: REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM !!!
There are much processes that are responsible for the security of your system, and
rebooting activates those programs again.

Good luck, and if you any questions just send an email, but be aware that I don't
know every program, so maybe I don't know a solution.

Programs which I have installed using this method:
  - Game "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace"
  - The Seti@home client
  - PsiWin 2.3.3 (for syncing a Psion Series 7 pocketpc)
  - Just before I wrote this: Game "Starfleet Command Orion Pirates"
  - and some more which I have forgotten.
(generally any program which uses the 16-bit or 32-bit "Setup Launcher" from InstallShield.

Everyone who has read this: Good Luck !!

We got the same problem when we wanted to reinstall InstallShield 5.1. We tried everything in this forum (remove bluetooth, set TEMP dir, start RPC service, etc.) with no success. The solution we found was to start windows XP in safe mode, and we finally could install the software ! Hope this helps.

Ok, After spending over 8 hours on this issue I GAVE UP! Here is the solution, which sounds HORRIFIC, however it went very fast. Much faster if I would have just done this in the first place. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;886630 Do a repair of Windows xp, skip the first screan and select repair on the second screen after you accept the licensing. Re-install XPSP2 , go to windows updates and download. I honestly did this while cooking dinner, and TV. Sometimes you just have to walk away. Good Luck, at least it is a fix. DebbLR

The solution that worked for me was to right click properties on the install file for the program. Below the Attributes settings there was an additional option which said something like this program came from another PC ... and may have been blocked. It offered an option to unblock - then voila it worked! The file had been downloaded from the web.

Why bother? Just boot to Safe Mode, install program and be done with it.

Just start the program, and kill some processes like Norton Antivirus / Norton InternetSecurity / Ad-aware / Spybot etc. When it is done, the installer will just pop up immediately. After you've installed your program restart your computer, so the processes start again.

re-register Windows Installer
Sunday, January 15, 2006 at 1:51 pm
Posted by Kyle (2 messages posted)

If you're having trouble installing using a "Setup.EXE" or anything that's packaged with a "***.MSI" file, then your windows installer might be registered with a program that didn't install correctly, was cancelled, failed, etc.. I found this tip on Techsupportforums and it worked for me... "Torinir01-20-2005, 06:30 PM Run MSIEXEC to get an error box that will say what version of the installer is on the computer. If it's not version 2.0 or later, update it from the Microsoft website. If it's already 2.0, reregistering the MSI may fix it. From the Run box, do each of the following once. msiexec /unregister (Hit enter and nothing will appear to happen. This is normal.) msiexec /regserver (Hit enter and all the icons on the desktop should flash. Also normal.) Try reinstalling the software."

I posted this under the heading "solution worth a try" and just wanted to give it
some more coverage...

from techsupportforums:
Torinir01-20-2005, 06:30 PM
If the setup isn't running, check to see if Windows Installer 2.0 is on the computer.

Run MSIEXEC to get an error box that will say what version of the installer is on
the computer.

If it's not version 2.0 or later, update it from the Microsoft website.

If it's already 2.0, reregistering the MSI may fix it.

From the Run box, do each of the following once.

msiexec /unregister (Hit enter and nothing will appear to happen. This is normal.)

msiexec /regserver (Hit enter and all the icons on the desktop should flash. Also
normal.)

Try reinstalling the software.

You don't have to "kill" or stop these processes. Simply right click the MS AntiSpyware icon in the system tray (the "target" looking one) and select Security Agents Status (Enabled) and select the option to disable real-time protection. The installer will (if stopped) go from 99% to 100% and the setup will finish. You do not need to uninstall MS AntiSpyware. I believe MS AntiSpy is stopping the processes from running because they have underscore "_" in the filename and could be a spyware signature. When you are done installing you can turn it back on.

I had the same problem. If you have an ati graphics card this conflicts with the setup, i shut down CLI.exe from opening up Task Manager (CTRL - ALT - DEL) and going into processes - as soon as i ended this all the 32-bit setup's i had worked!!!

Sorry for my ignorance, but where is the "system tray" - is it on the right side of the bottom taskbar? If so, when I click the MS Antispyware "shield" it opens Windows Security Center, which has no Security Agent Status in it? Or am I in the wrong place? Thanks, Bill

My setup went from 99% to start installing as soon as I disabled Mcafee security. Apparently it thinks it's spyware and blocks the install. Frustrating !!!

data execution prevention

had this problem on a server 2003 R2 SP1 box, 16 bit app installer would give up halfway through install by adding the 16 bit installer app to the exceptions list for the builtin data execution prevention feature of w2k3, fixed the problem found at system properties>advanced>performance settings>data execution prevention
