Question about 'Replace Enternet 300 with Windows XP's built-in support for PPPoE'

Posted by koizumi (3 messages posted)

I have a question about Replace
Enternet 300 with Windows XP's built-in support for PPPoE:

Step 6 indicates that "Choose the Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password option, and click Next." Unfortunately, in my case this option is NOT available. The only "option" I can access is "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on". What can I do to fix this ? I tried several settings, still blocked. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is the complete steps I used to set up ADSL....
>1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
>2. Click the "Network and Internet Connections" icon.
>3. Click the "Set up or change your Internet connection" icon.
>4. Click the Setup button, then click the Next button.
>5. Select "Connect to the Internet", then click the Next button.
>6. Select "Set up my connection manually", then click the Next button.
>7. Select "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password", then click the Next button.
>8. In the ISP Name field, type a name to identify your PPPoE connection (ie. EarthLink), then click the Next button.
>9. In the User name field, type your email address >10. In the Password and Confirm password fields, type your password.
>11. Uncheck the box next to "Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer".
>12. Check the box next to "Make this the default Internet connection" if you wish to make the connection the default.
>13. Uncheck the box next to "Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection", then click the Next button.
>14. Check the box next to "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" to have a shortcut place on your desktop, then click the Finish button.
> After you have esatblished things work you can go back and enable the firewall if you want. It just helps not to have on when getting setup. Less to trouble shoot if you have a problem. Good Luck

I am answering to my question as I found the answer myself !!! (no help provided
by my ISP though ...)

When starting the wizard, there was a pop-up window with registration through a modem.
I did close this windows immediately as I wanted DSL connection. I was wrong. I inadvertantly
went to the second screen and canceled and, just like magic, choice for "Choose the
Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password option"
was available !!!

Unfortunately, I cannot recreate as I applied SP1 and behavior is not the same anymore.

Someone has to take capture screens and send them to the webmaster as it is a very
good bug from M$.

Best of luck,

--Phil

Koizumi, Did you ever figure out what caused this problem? I see that the respondent did not properly read your message since he assumes that the "Choose the Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password option, and click Next." is enabled. I am currently experiencing the same thing and I have even re-installed xp from scratch (!!!) I would appreciate any wisdom you could send. Thanks, Ditek

Similar problem. Rinstalled XP to resolve a startup problem. However, dial-up connections wiped out. Tried using internet connections wizzard to set up, but both dial-up networking and broadband w/pwrd dimmed (unavailable) in setup wizzard (only Broadband on all the time is available). Tried fixes noted in Q320558 (method 1&2). Still dimmed - not able to install dial-up connetions. Help. Are you listening Microsoft?

Hey just to bump this, I'm having the same problem, and the MS KB article did not provide the cure. Both modem and PPPoE options are still greyed out, making install of PPPoE impossible. Still searching, but I'm having nada for luck. What causes these two options to get greyed in the first place?! Thanks! =-MDP-=

try adding the are code/and or entire phone number in the control panel's phone and modem options. that usually works after you reboot.

If you didn't find a fix go to Microsoft KB 329441. You need to remove registry subkeys as noted in the Article. I had the same problem and this fixed it.

I found the solution. I too could not find a cure in site. Until I did the most obvious thing to me. Go to start, then run. Type in msconfig and hit enter. Go to the services tab. In that list, make sure Telephony has a check mark next to it. Restart then try it again. Mostlikely it'll work. Or do this (its the same as above but you do not have to restart for it to work right away, although you should restart). Go to control panel, then administative tools, then to services. In that list, go to Telephony and then to double click on it. Then go to start up type.. and select manual. Once you do that, right below that it says "service status" click on start. This deffinately help if the updates nor the MS article doesn't work. I hope this helps someone.

I was having the same problem. It took me about 10 hours of troubleshooting to figure it out. The solution that worked for me was easier than I could of imagined. Under the phone/modem option in the control panel, Configure this so it is aware of your area code and save. For some reason this trigged the other options for the modem and PPPOE. I hope this works for you too.

I had the same problem you do (did). But when I turned "Remote Access Connection Manager" and "Telephony" services on (to be sure, I put "Automatic" for both of them) everything (e.g. grayed radiobuttons about broadband with username and password) appeared ok. The idea came to me suddenly when I noticed a word "Telephony" in the article of Microsoft. Hope this helps. Cheers.

It WORKED for me!! I purchased a new HP-Compaq Notebook with WinXP Home loaded. I updated to Win XP pro then I had greyed out "Connect using a dial-up modem" when trying to set up an ADSL dial-up. Could'nt then connect to I-net. I tried EVERYTHING to resolve it , including the useless "MS Knowledgebase". Deleting these Reg entries worked after many, many hours of frustration. I THANK YOU so much for this fix.

This problem is still lurking for some of us. I finally, finally (after much hair pulling) fixed it with this method of deleting the RasMan registry subkeys. I had tried absolutely everything else listed on this and almost every other website. I think now I am too battle-weary to enjoy my newfound connectivity!

I only tried to delete the registry keys in folders 25 and 26, it worked, I guess for all of us now, but the thing is, what is causing the dimmed options???? in my case I installed sp1 and used system restore that deleted my sp1 again and caused this problem, so I'm sure that installing sp1 again was also a solution.

I had the same problem. The registry keys fix in the microsoft article 320558 didn't work for me. What did work is going into services.msc (from the run box) and checking the properties of the telephony service. Make sure that it is set to automatic and then start the service by clicking on the 'start' button if it was stopped. Worked for me!

All these fixes usually don't solve the problem - they're mostly crap and just don't work. Here is something so simple that I really am at a loss as to how Bill Gates and his bunch of monkeys at Micro$oft have not posted this solution; Go to: CONTROL PANEL--->ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS--->SERVICES SET "Remote Access Connection Manager" to "MANUAL" or "AUTOMATIC" If the service is unable to be started then you will need to reboot. The greying out of the "Connect using a dial-up modem" and "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password" is a 100% reproducible phenomenon, ie: turn off/stop the "Remote Access Connection Manager" service and your top two connection options will be greyed out. Turn it back on and you're all go! F**k M$ and their so-called "help" at article support.microsoft.com/kb/320558

Same problem in 2008 - greyed-out dial-up - in new Panasonic Toughbook W7 after installation of XPPro SP2 (Vista downgrade). Needed 2 fixes: 1. Run, services.msc, scroll to and highlight Telephony, Action, Properties, Start-Up Type - change from Manual to Automatic 2. SAME, but this time for Remote Access Connection Manager, which was set to Disabled! NO NEED TO CHANGE REGISTRY SETTINGS. Good luck everyone.
