I have a question about Downloading Windows Updates:

I downloaded Most recent windows xp security updates about a week ago and since it was getting late, decided to go to bed with my computer continuing to download. In the morning I was unable to turn it off. I turned it off at the surge protector. At this point i was unable to have the computer completely load. It would get tom desktop but the start menu would not load. I ended reinstalling with factory CD. Could the updates have caused the problem?

Yes. Updates interact with a lot of different brands of hardware drivers. I believe some systems are buggy after some updates. My ME box when I bought it 2 years ago was really unstable. I did 3 system restores over a 2 month period. Since ME is tempermental I thought that was it. After the 3rd restore I took my time to reinstall other apps, except updates. The PC ran really good. I never reinstalled Critical updates. Then in Feb this year I built A PC and installed XP. After a week of running and convinced all was well I went to MS and Loaded the 30 or so updates that were avail. at that time. The PC went Postal right after. I uninstalled all of them. Didn't want to take time to figure which one it didn't like. My XP Box hasn't crashed since. My ME box is my game PC. and has run about year and half without any more Reinstalls. Critical updates have caused me more problems then any hacker ever will. I did install the CDRW patch, and a small 32K expite patch that was from a web site not related to MS but addressing a security issue.

Hi,

I'm A SMALL Microsoft OEM And Am Have Had The Same Problem. Here Is The Solution 
That Has Worked For Me. It's Time Consuming And VERY Exacting, But It Has Worked 
For Me Several Times Now,

Step 1: After A Fresh Install Of Windows XP, Go To The Windows Update Site And Download 
ONLY The Windows XP Updates. Do Them ONE AT A TIME Starting At The BOTTOM Of The 
List, Add The One You Want And Install Per Screen Instructions. Restart Your Machine 
After Each Update, EVEN If The Update DOESN'T Require It.

Step 2: After Completing This, Open Windows Explorer, Go To The Following Folders 
And Delete ALL Files And Folders. An Easy Way Is to Highlight The Folder(s) In Question, 
Click On Edit, Then "Select All", Then Hit The Delete Button On The Keyboard. Then 
Empty The Recycle Bin. The Folders Are: "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP", AND "C:\Documents and 
Settings\(Your User Name)\Local Settings\Temp".

Step 3: Go Back To The Microsoft Windows Update Site And Download Any Driver Updates 
That Are Available To You, AGAIN, Doing Them ONE AT A TIME Starting At The BOTTOM 
Of The List, Add The One You Want And Install Per Screen Instructions. When Completed, 
Go Back And Repeat Step 2.

Step 4: Go Back To The Microsoft Windows Update Site And Download The Critical Updates, 
AGAIN, Doing Them ONE AT A TIME Starting At The BOTTOM Of The List. Restart Your 
Machine After Each Update, EVEN If The Update DOESN'T Require It. IMPORTANT!!!! Skip 
The Update Called "811493: Security Update (Windows XP)", Download Size: 3.2MB . 
NEVER Install It. When Completed, Go Back And Repeat Step 2. Your Machine Should 
Now Be As Up To Date As Possible, And Still Be Stable (Unless You Have A Hardware 
Problem). WATCH OUT Because These Updates MUST Be ALL Be "Removed" Except The One 
That You Want, NOT Added Like The Other Catagories.

Everyone Please Let Me Know If This works Because If It Does For Several More People, 
Then I Can "Jump Down Microsoft's Throat" About That Particular Update That Causes 
Machines To "Lockup", OK? I Know This Sounds Like A LOT Of trouble, But It Has Been 
Proven to Work Here On Several Installations Of "Windows XP Home Edition, With Service 
Pack 1".

I Suggest Printing this Out So That You can Follow It More Easily.
