unable to delete a file
Sunday, November 10, 2002 at 11:03 pm Posted by p.prk
(2 messages posted)
yesterday i tried to fix a bad indexed divx .avi . it was like 600Mb in size and
the divfix program hung up at one time so i had to reboot. when restarted and tried
to delete the file i got "Cannot delete [file] : It is being used by another person
or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." after
which the explorer started to act wickedly - slowed down, hang up ... i tried rebooting
in safe mode, logging as an administrator and deleting the file, alas with no success.
so now i'm feeling helpless stuck with an useless 600Mb file on my system partition
which is small enough to afford the luxury of keeping and not minding the bastard
(.avi). ntfs here/i even started thinking of converting back to fat32, booting from
a diskette and trying removing the file, but that would take much time/need much
space, and i'm not even sure how to convert back to fat32 [glimpsed at the ntfs>fat32
thread and the waters there were unknown to me]. so any/all help would be highly
appreciated.

The problem isn't caused by NTFS. This same type of problem happens on FAT partitions
as well. It's likely that when the program crashed and you rebooted, the entry in
the registry that "says" that the file is in use did not get removed or the file
attribute is set to system. Which means you may need to edit the registry. Try
scanreg /restore at the command prompt if that doesn't work, you may need to edit
it manually. Regarding your thought of reverting back to FAT, I wouldn't. The only
way to "convert" is to reformat the drive and reinstall everything.

explorer slowed down like hell whatever i tried* to do with the problematic file,
even check it's properties. you must be right about the registry settings, but strange
enough i actually succeeded on deleting it (the file) by deleting the directory it
was in. i'll still check the registry. thanks!

Ga naar de Start-knop
Kies "Uitvoeren..." (of "Run...")

I'm sorry, forgot to translate.
Goto Start ==>Run
type "regedit", enter
Now you're in the register
Delete this registerkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32.
DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE!!!
Close register and restart pc.
The problem with the avi's should be disappeard.
Deleting of this registerkey has no further consequences.

I too struggled with the problem of same kind. Even regedit was of no help. Finally
I managed to get out of mess. I suggest you to try one simple thing which might work.
Go to command prompt
Change directory to E, F or G where ever the file you want to delete lies.
Type del filename(i.e. name of the file you want to delete)
The press enter
Thats all!!!!!
My best wishes.

Go "File" "Open"
select the damn .avi and hit delete

The root problem is that windows XP has a built in system that can scan files when
you highlight them and display information about the file in a pop-up or in additional
columns when in detail view, etc, etc. The particular problem here is that the "Avi
Properties Handler" likes to scan AVI files when you click on them to get information,
and it has to open up the file to do this. Unfortunately this takes some time, and
the handler isn't written very well so it doesn't handle malformed AVI streams very
nicely, causing it to "lock" the file open for a length of time while it tries to
decipher the content. While this file is open you cannot rename or delete. By removing
this registry key you remove the handler, so you won't get popup or additional information
on these files anymore, but it also won't lock it open so that you can delete it
without trouble.
In response to another post, there is no such thing as "registry keys" that indicate
when a file is open or closed... When a program opens a file in shared mode a hold
is put on it which prevents it from being deleted or renamed. If the file is opened
in exclusive read/write mode then no other program can even open it. This is all
stored in memory and isn't committed anywhere.

Have the same problem with a 50 Mb .eps file. I'm no expert with windows XP, have

window the file shows in the directory but the computer is 'unable to find' the file
when asked to delete it ...) I'm starting to get really annoyed with all this.. suggestions?

I've found that the easiest method is to rename the file so that the extension is
not recognised by Windows (i.e. rename file.avi to file.crap).
Windows will then allow you to delete the file with no problems

It can happen with any .avi, and is related to the file being 'linked' to explorer
for the purpose of showing further information if required.
The well known method of deleting the registry key works, but it is a permenant solution
and removes the further information which i sometimes require.
I use a utility that lets you shut down the task in explorer (close handle) and then
delete the file, with no permenant changes.
The utility can be found here.................
Process Explorer for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP/S2K3
Copyright (C) 1998-2003 Mark Russinovich
Sysinternals
www.sysinternals.com
...............................
So for example, if I had a file named film.avi that i couldnt delete, I open up this
util, search for 'film', when it shows the results, right click it, select 'close
handle' and then delete the file, and its gone.
Hope this helps,
Neil

Here's a good one. None of your ideas above worked for me yet. There is a 1.4GB file
on my hard drive called C:\SQL.LOG created by ODBC tracing. I stopped Tracing, stopped
SQL Server, Stopped EVERY SERVICE and Process the OS would allow me to(WinXP) and
I still get the message the file is in use. Renaming doesn't work. Booting into Safe
Mode Command Prompt DOESN'T WORK. This file WILL NOT go away. I need another better
solution. Autoexec.BAT?

Right, this is due to the XP handler. But the easy way is to wait around 30 seconds.
Then, XP will release the handle and you'll be able to delete it.
Better solutions are:
1) Open a Windows Explorer and go to Tools\Folder Options\View\Display file size
information in folder tips
2) Use Messa's utility to delete the handler

That trick works with any other program that can access the files, even DOS prompt,
but only in some cases because explorer.exe appearently does not take a look very
often at the handlers table in RAM to figure out that the file is nolonger in use,
BUT when a program crashes or it is forced to close and really leaves the handle
opend to a file FORGET IT 'cos there is no way to force XP to delete the damn file.
You have to restart and thus reset the handler table. This is a very annoying BUG
in Windows. The OS should check what process locks the file, inform the user, and
if the process is no longer active override the handler and permid access to the
file. Billy is the one we should write to...damn...

re: unable to delete AutoCAD 2004 (C) AutoDesk.exe file

Hi.
I tried every fix listed in this thread and windows wont allow a delete in Windows,
a command prompt, cannot move, rename, delete, etc the file. Nothing seems to work,
and the file *was* 399 MB in size, but even after deleting the content of the file
with a hex editor, it still is run by windows and nothing seems to work. Not in
normal mode, safe mode, diag mode, etc. Any hints?

If you have a file that has a long name and it can’t be edited by Windows and
is stuck and want to get rid of it the ways some user have mentioned above but don’t
know or want to do it the long way and would prefer to just drag drop the file in
to a program and press delete? Well if you join with www.Gecclub.tk they have programs
for doing this there are three ways you can do it by, Dos, Start Up and another way.
Download this program for free. It’s a freeware. It worked for me I had three
files I downloaded from Win MX and they had a 50 word file name but now all three
are gone I deleted a bmp and a avi file using the Dos method and a normal file with
the delete on start up method its great learn more and download it from www.Gecclub.tk

Try deleting the file and then quickly select another file and it should "let that
file go"... hope this helps :-)

Wow - sorry to bump an old thread but just want to say thanks.
I searched this forum and found this thread - the delete in notepad method worked
for an .avi file that windows said was in use. Safe mode did not work...
When I clicked on the file, explorers virtual memory grew continuously and the CPU
went to and stayed at 100 % - it froze my pc. Anyone know why it sent resources soaring?
This was on a FAT 32 drive on XP/
THANKS!

My thoughts are that Windblows was trying to open an associated program that went
with that file but because of a problem with the file it casues an issue with that
program, looking at the task manager while trying to open that file or delete that
file gives the clue of what is going on.
Respectfully,

Hi,
I really need some help! I've read through all the comments on this page and have
tried most if not all of them with no success. I have a .mov file (quicktime?) on
my laptop which I downloaded from limewire. I want to delete the file but windows
vista says I do not have permission or ownership of the file in order to delete it.
Help!

Check out:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/sysinternalssuite.mspx
The app file that will do the trick is "pendmove"
"Process Explorer" will tell you who has the file open.

i have tried everything that everyone has tried but the files are still not being
deleted. It wont even let me watch them any more. i was moving them around from folder
to folder along with deleting some files when it messed up. they are on my external
hardrive and when i try it says " cannot delete [NTF]file name: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently
in use, Also it wont open in note pad. i cant change the name, and says access denied
when trying to open it with other programs. Any help anyone can offer would be great
thanxs.

YOU DON'T NEED TO GO THRU ALL THIS REGISTRY BUSINESS, AND IT'S DANGEROUS. JUST DO
THIS:
Windows explorer.exe, the thing that keeps track of open files, gets confused about
which files are still in use. So just kill it and restart it.
- Alt-Ctl-Del
- Task Manager
- Click the Processes tab
- Sort into name order by clicking Image Name heading.
- Find, click explorer.exe
- Click the End Process button.
- File->New Task (Run...)
- Enter "explorer"
- Click Ok
Your desktop icons have disappeared and reappeared. Now you can delete/rename the
file.
