Question about 'Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network'

I have recently been trying to network two pc's (peer to peer) together. One system is running Windows XP Pro (with Administrator, Power user & Limited User... guest account disabled) The other system running Windows 98SE (with the same User names and passwords) I seem to be able to setup the network ok on both machines (using different computer names, using the same workgroup name etc.) wherefore each system can see the other in the workgroup (network neighborhood). The problem lies in connecting to the XP system from the 98 system. Logged on as Administator in the XP system, I can connect to and access files from the 98 system, but only as Administrator!!!..the other users on the XP system, however, cannot. Whilst logged on as administrator/power user(with the same passwords as on XP machine)on the 98 system, I cannot connect to the XP System.... i keep getting a dialog box prompting for a password to access the IPC$ resource...... (eg. \\computer name\IPC$) When i enter the Administrator/power user password....i get an "incorrect password" message.... Any ideas on where i am going wrong?...I am sure there must be some solution or configuration setting to resolve this issue... Some much needed technical advice/support to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated... Thank you... Chadley :)

The setting for Network Remote Access in Windows XP Professional, by default, is
"Disabled". Run the Network Setup Wizard to enable Network Remote Access. To launch
the Wizard do the following in Windows XP.

1.) Click on My Network Places (
2.) Under the Network Task Group select "Setup a Home or Small Office Network"
3.) Follow the setup steps in the Wizard

A connection to a Windows XP system from Windows 95, 98, or Me, over a LAN (Locan
Area Network) possible through the use of Windows XP Network Setup Wizard.

You're gonna love this one, found the solution: we had the same IPC$ problem with W98SE laptops trying to open a share on a 2000 memberserver in a NT4 domain. The laptops are not a member of the domain but since they logon to Windows only (not network) with the same username and password as in the domain they can still open networkshares, except the ones on W2K servers. Open the network control panel, open the properties for "Client for Microsoft networks" (yes I know, you use Windows logon but you still have to edit this), uncheck "logon to Windows NT domain" (if not already unchecked) but you have to put the right domain name in the blank field. Weird since you uncheck "logon to NT domain" but it still uses the domain name for logon. It worked for us though! Much better than making useraccounts on W2K machines or enabling the guest account. Good luck! Emile

I have the following setup

My DSL router’s address is 10.0.0.1. My wireless 802.11g router directly inside that
is at 192.168.0.1. The DSL router gets an automatically assigned public IP on the
outside. My laptop connected wirelessly to the Wi-Fi router gets a private IP based
on the 192.168.0.1 scheme and my desktop running Windows 98se has an ethernet connection
to the wireless router. It’s IP is also automatically assigned.

The desktop can connect to the Internet. The laptop can connect to the Internet.
With a little work I can get the desktop to see and access shares on the laptop.
I can’t get the laptop to see and access the desktop and its shares. I believe that
the network not all being on the same subnet is the problem. Whatever the problem
is, I’d really like a detailed answer on how to get them all to see each other and
work with files freely from one to the other and back again while both machines still
see the Internet fine.

I need to do it with the equipment and operating systems that I have. The DSL router
is a Speed Stream 5660, which I can get inside of fine. The wireless router is a
Netgear WGR614. I will probably find it easiest to change the Netgear router over
to the 10.0.0.1 scheme, making it 10.0.0.2 (?) if that’s what I need to do (?) I’m
not afraid to get into the routers and make changes as long as it will work. Whatever
the easiest solution is. Oh and winipcfg doesn’t show anything but zeros for the
IP address of the W98se box or for the subnet there, so I’m not sure if it’s getting
its IP and subnet from the one router or the other. It shows a DNS server of 10.0.0.1
though, which should be the outer router for DSL.

Thanks for any assistance.

Emilie, I know this is a year out from your posting, but I have the same problem
with a desktop 98SE trying to access a wireless Windows XP home computer. So my
question is, what is the domain name, is that the SSID or workgroup name? or is it
the IP address of the XP computer? Thanks for the help.
