Question about 'How do I get back into Windows XP'
Saturday, November 16, 2002 at 6:10 pm Posted by Ian Rivlin

My Win XP operated machine has suddenly developed a problem - It starts to boot up,
then just after the login screen it says that the system has been stopped "To prevent
damage to the system". If I try and boot up from the Win XP disk and use the R (repair)
option, it asks for an administrator password. I'm sure I have put the correct password
in (and I've tried a few variations) but it keeps saying "invalid".
Do you have any suggestions for getting round this problem? I would have like to
boot up into "dos" but, unlike Win 98, I can't get a dos window to run CHKDSK (In
case of some HDD fault).
Any assistance would be very gratefully received.
Ian

you might double check your password since it should be case sensitive, XP does not
use dos at all. So it won't do you any good that way. Worse case would be a complate
reload?

I would only use the complete re-installation as a last resort as the HDD has all
my letters and e-mails on it.
I did try the capitals and lower case - still said "Invalid Password" and the irritation
is three strikes and you have to re-boot. Bummer!

Try hit the F8 key before windows boot.
Login using "Last Known Good Configuration" or "Save Mode with Command Prompt" then
restore your computer system to the state before the problem started.
I'd ever have the same problem in the past when installing Roxio Easy CD Creator.
It's important to uninstall what ever programs you installed between restore point
time and current time before applying System Restore.
Good Luck.

I finally found out the problem - absurdly simple and irritatingly obscure - I just
set the BIOS to "Fail Safe Defaults" and everything started working again. Ridiculous
- Microsoft had nothing about this on their "(UN)Knowledge base"
That's for the advice anyway.

Do realize that if the "fix" was to change the BIOS settings, then it may have been
that the problem was not XP itself, but something more fundamental in your computer?
Be honest, have you ever heard of a BIOS chaning itself (except for the rarest of
viruses)? So, why did you have to make any changes?
Suggestions for the future: (1) Define a second user on the PC, with full administrative
rights, and a simple password. Write it down, in several places. (2) Make some
plan to backup your pesonal files. You got away easy this time. Learn from the
experience. Depending on the volume of files, CDs are good. Or, a USB 2.0 external
hard drive is faster for multiple Gigs. (3) If you are unsure that you can do a
repair of XP, get some system backup software, like Norton GHOST. Also useful for
hardrive crashes. (4) If your disk is FAT32, you could have used DOS to copy files
from it. But if NTFS, get an NTFS driver for DOS, and put it on a 98 or ME boot
disk. One is free from http://www.winternals.com/. However, it only reads/copies
FROM NTFS to FAT32. Their write on NTFS version costs money.

This is an interesting thread, however you can build boot floppies for both Windows
2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro. Its six floppies for XP. I don't remember exactly
what you can do with them. I used the XP Pro floppies to install XP on a PC with
SCSI CD ROM that didn't want to be a boot device, very old BIOS. The boot floppies
can be downloaded from a Microsoft site. Don't remenber which site.

Ok,
had a similar experience,but i never actually had a password!!!!!!!!!1however the
only resolve was to reinstall xp, not wishing to lose my existing data i chose to
boot off the cd,hit the "install windows", on the prompt"xp does not recommend installing
a further copy on the C:\WINDOWS" I set up a new directory called C:\windows2 and
let the install go...well pc booted up showing dual boot, launched into c:\windows2
and presto everything there intact except e-mail stuff, reload of programmes...and
back in business

Quite a weird situation. I went back into the computer's BIOS and simply set everything
to "Fail safe defaults" - it started working afterwards - no problems since.
I'll never understand Windows XP......

Hello i also had this problem . You see there is a file in windows Xp called SVCHOST.exe
i thought it was a virus cause it really takes up the memory. So what you need to
do is replace it back into c:\windows\system32 file.
Also the admin password is normally just blank so just press enter because its NOT
the same as your windows password.

IAN,
Can you help me? I'm experiencing the same exact problem as you. I'm attempting to
do a repair utilizing the windows xp pro cd (even though my comp has windowsxphome)
and when i get to that point it asks me for adminstrative password and nothing works.
Can you tell me exactly what you did to repair this problem? I apologize in advance
for not being very computer knowledgable however if you can help me i'd really appreciate
it

VERY EASY.
You're going into the repair console too early.
Simply don't elect for "REPAIR" at that stage, carry on and click "install windows",
THEN press F8 (ie accept the agreement, then you'll be given the opportunity to REPAIR
on the next page. No administrator password is required. You will have to use the
Product key, though.
Do understand, though, that Reapir often doesn't work. It might be best to use Windows
Install Clean Up (you can download it from Microsoft.com) and first make sure that
you don't have any conflicting registry entries. PCSurgeon's registry check is reasonably
good and not too aggressive in chpping out registry entries. You might try that after
running Windows Install Cean Up. (But only do this if you have a working knowledge
of registries. (it can be a bit of a minefield, if it's not used properly). Hope
this helps, Ian
PS, if all this fails - copy all your downloaded executable files and documents to
another hard drive and fully re-install Windows - you can do this without re-formatting
the C drive. It's not really a big deal and virtually guarantees that all the rubbish
which is clogging up your computer is removed.
