Outlook Express starts Win Messenger, why?! How to get rid of it?

Hi fellas. Everytime I start Outlook Express, Windows Messenger loads with it too - despite my Outlook Express setting not to start it. What's even more annoying is that I cannot close it (Windows Messenger) even after I have closed Outlook Express. It says: " There are other applications currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. You must close these applications before you can exit Windows Messenger. These applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, and Internet Explorer. " I have of course tryied to close it with everything else cosed. I couldn't. Help!! I run Win XP Pro with SP 1. Outlook version is 6.00. Messenger Version is 4.7. I don't think you will need hardware info, but what the hek. MSI motherboard, AMD Athlon 1600+ XP, 512 RAM, ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV... Thanks for help. barondro

I am no computer tech. But I think I can help. Go to www.dougknox.com. Look for file name xp_messenger_remove.vbs.(or look for messenger disable) Thats what I did. Hope this helps.

Look at everyone jump right past the obvious.

In Outlook Express, Options (Tools Menu), uncheck "Automatically log on to Windows
Messenger".

You stated that you don't even want to use messenger? And don't want the annoyance of it...then do what I did. Simply rename your messenger folder located in your program files. Original name is messenger I believe. Rename it to anything you want. Ex. messenger sucks. But don't delete it, that can mess things up. By changing the name, the computer simply dosen't know where it is and wont load it or try to log you in! Hope that works for you, it did for me!

Stop Windows Messenger from Auto-Starting

Simply delete the following Registry Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSMSGS

Remove MSN Messenger from Outlook Express

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Value Name: Hide Messenger,
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value), Value Data: (2 = remove messenger). Create a
new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'Hide Messenger' and set the
value to 2.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change
to take effect.

OR... use the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and kill the stupid process called MSMSGS.EXE. The icon will still show in the tray until you mouse over it, then it will vanish. Note: You can also go Start > Run > msconfig then under the Startup tab make sure to uncheck the MSMSGS service so that it will not run at Startup each time. Cheers!

you're all missing an important part of the original poster's problem (and the same i'm having). I "WANT" to use messenger once in a while.. what i don't want.. is to have the message, "There are other applications currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. You must close these other applications before ou can exit Windows Messenger....." and then it lists a few apps, which of course, i'm not running.. ARGH

Much easier way to stop messenger , just go to outlook express , choose messenger , then options , run at startup : off - run in the background - off - this doesn't fix the right click and exit error , but if you click the X then it closes it.

I got rid of it by running gpedit.msc and choosing Administrative Templates>Windows Componenets>MSN Messenger and disabling the two options that read: Do not allow Windows Messenger to be Run and Do not Automatically Start Windows Messenger. I had a bit of problem with my system and a the registry had to be reverted and now, despite those changes it still lods with Outlook Express. You might try the gpedit.msc trick, it might work for you.

Well Savathar you are the only one who figured out what was wrong with atleast the way microsoft thinks there shi__y prog should run. the rest of you want to delete regestry keys to a prog i need to use and manuly shut it off each and ebery time i load my pc . i have been going crazy tring to figure a way but prob fixed. They must know how bad the windows messenger is and that why they wont let you remove it form the remove windows components any more. it dosnt chang that fact that it tries to start evry time i check mail or sucking system resources but atleast it dosnt blow my cover by signing me online any more and stays disconnected. i would find a way to take the damm thing out but everyone in my work uses it so im stuck with the piece of SHI--. if any of you think you know how to add instant messenger and windows media pplayer to the add windows components aplet the way it sould be so we could actualy controll what we want to use i would love to hear it. thanks Savathar

If you want to continue to use Windows Messenger, but don't want it to run w/ OE, the second REGEDIT works PERFECTLY!!! One thing I noticed about the Group Policy Edit was that it slowed down the OE startup TREMENDOUSLY!!! Plus, that prevents use at all. -JC

It is not that difficult...no need for a hack, no need to rename directories. My recommendation for the next time: first read the manual, then the help file, then the microsoft online documentation. __________ Just use the Options in the Tools bar. Go to General and uncheck "automatic Messenger start". That's it. __________ Regards, JoeY

The point being that some of us did all the registry hacks, the options in outlook to not start messenger and without someone being on the ball and noticing that NAV2003 trick I would still be cursing MS.

You are a Genius SAV!!! So simple! So easy! I never even Dreamed that Norton Antivirus 2003 was the cause...This problem has bugged me for a YEAR!!! I used to use the other work-arounds mentioned on this site...Note by the way that only certain versions of messenger will cause this problem. IT starts happening if I have norton and then I AUTO-UPDATE my clean install of windows xp (without service pack 1) which automatically changes version of messenger to 4.6 or 4.7....free at last...free at last..... I thank sir Savathar.. I am free at last!!!!!!!.....right on dude!!!

Hello there, Although I have deleted the registry key everytime I open my Outlook Express there was a (stupid) delay. Since I renamed the folder ..\Program Files\Messenger to something else this stoped. Thanks a lot
