In all likelihood, you'll have to replace it.

Does your mainboard have onboard sound? you must disable that in the bios. Darrell

I recently upgraded from Win 98 to XP, and my Creative AWE 64 ISA sound card is recognized,
drivers are loaded for it, but every media playback program (e.g. Windows media player)
hangs, I dont have any system sounds and my CD player wont play audio CDs. However,
when I plug my guitar and preamp into the "line-in" jack on the card, that comes
through the speakers just fine...same with the mic. I disabled onboard sound, do
I have to disable onchip sound as well? (in BIOS)? Some reports say XP wont support
ISA cards, others say the opposite. Has anyone been able to solve a problem like
this? Also, many of my older programs, such as games, recording studio software etc.
cant even be installed, and crash the whole system. Any hints?

Got crazy triying, up to now only find an "annoying" solution:
1 - Change (or keept in my case) the driver to
TARJETA (card)DE AUDIO DE 16 BITS CREATIVE AWE64 (COMPATIBLE CON SB16)
2- Go to Contorl panel Add Hardware, go bottom of the list add new hardware, install
hardware by hand, chosse sound, search and select, SOUND BLASTER 16, AWE 32 O COMPATIBLE
(WMD)
if you try now it begins to work but not at all.
3- Go System, hardware, manager, and disable (just disable) SOUND BLASTER 16, AWE
32 O COMPATIBLE (WMD)
It worked for my AWE 64 ISA CARD (still searching for apropiate drivers) , and had
try every thing.

Don't quote me on this but i believe ISA cards are NOT supported with windows XP.
XP will load generic divers in place if it cannot find pre-defined ones.
If you look at your hardware info under system you'll see that there are sounds drivers
loaded, but they will not work with your sound card. I believe the reason ISA is
not being supported has something to do with the IRQ handler, which i read is different
from 9x/me...something like that. My advice is to go get a cheap PCI card, you can
get a 6chl card for 17 bucks, or if ur hardcore, pick up a new 6.1 DTS/DOLBY D. card.

Hi I am having the same problem with a yamaha opl ymf719 card which I took out of
my P1 machine and put into my P3, even from the BIOS it doesnt show up under the
PNP reserved part (just before XP loads) where everything else does - I have an ISA
modem which works fine (setup as non-pnp) but the soundcard will not get picked up
- there is nothing under device manager AT ALL and doing a full hardware search finds
nothing - I have tryed to remove the modem and only have the sound card in but it
still has the same problem, I know the card works and XP even has drivers for the
exact card I have so it seems to be the BIOS not picking up on the card??

Im running a ISA 33.6k modem and a soundblaster 16 ISA sound card under XP - to get
the modem running I set it to legacy settings such as com2 irq3 etc and did the full
hardware search (after the PNP search completes) - the soundcard was different it
would not autodetect it or pick it up at all - what I did was install the drivers
for the sb16 ANYWAY, and when the computer restarted it worked fine even after showing
no signs of detecting it

XP does not recognize sound device

I just installed XP Pro on my new Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe motherboard, which has an on-board
sound card. It has a built-in C-Media CMI9880 sound device.
However, no sound device shows in the hardware profile. When I install the driver
from the CD that came with the motherboard, the installation stops and terminates.
Anyone having similar problems?

Hi all,
Met the same problem with a bunch of SB16 ISA CARDs ...
Solved it using default WDM driver (SB16 and AWE32 compatible) AND using settings
IRQ5 DMA3 DMA0 because XP defaults them to IRQ9 DMA3 DMA0 ... since those ISA cards
event tho they're plug n play for most, doesn't support IRQ9 as base adress you encounter
the NO SOUND under XP problem ...
NExt problem is Windows XP does not support Gain BASS and TREBLE control for these
cards ...
Looks like Creative won't do a move ...
Time to go Linux ?
cheers,
kshirow

Answering to all your questions above... windows XP does NOT support anymore the
legacy cards. one solution i can figure out REMOVE the card from the system, get
Windows NT 4.0 cd-rom and install ONE file called "pnpisa.inf" that's inside the
cd-rom. Restart the system after that and tell how'd it went because i don't know
if it works for everybody out there...
another solution is BUY another card... u can find them at $15...

If the system's BIOS allows this to be done, one way to resolve this problem is to
change the IRQs manually for the USB device(s) and sound card in the BIOS setup program.
Refer to the motherboard's manual, or the start-up screen for the key or key combination
to press to enter the BIOS. You have to take care to make sure that no two devices
are using the same IRQ.

I just reinstalled XP and have developed several annoying problems. The lack of sound
is the latest one and since the sound card is on the motherboard it's probably not
the card which was working just fine. I have a ShuttleX machine. Seem to have had
a myriad of problems over the two years I've owned it.
Thanks for your help.

I had the same problem. But to solve that, You have to install XP servixe Pack 1
first or Win 2000 service Pack 1.
It will work on that OS. After that U can upgrade your Windows.

I, too, recently had to reinstall XP (though the Dell 4700 is only 6 months young)
because I could not get past the login page one day. I hated to do it, but I couldn't
get into the program to do a System Restore.
Now I am experiencing a number of problems, one of which is the non-output of sound.
No system sounds, no sounds when I run Jukebox--nada colada. I of course had to
reinstall via discs everything that was originally factory installed. I have not
changed sound cards or anything. Everything worked fine before this reinstallation
of XP.
I've read a number of posts that mention BIOS. I've been hesitant to get into BIOS
to perhaps adjust settings for fear of messing things up even more.
Anyone have any helpful suggestions? I'd be SO very grateful!
Thanks in advance! :)

I own a computer repair business and see this sort of thing all the time. I do however
frequently install ISA sound cards on windows xp computers, that should not be the
problem, it is more likely just the procedure that is being used to install.

Seems to be a lot on the net about this and similar problems. I installed XP and
no sound!!! - when I tried to check sound devices it just showed a modem. Like XP
had found the modem and thought - that will do nicely for the sound. Maybe it would
have but I had all the speakers plugged into the sound card - which as far as I could
see wasn't even found by XP. Suggestions on net were to remove sound card - restart
- put it back and restart and let XP find it - AND make sure you have the correct
driver ready - also found some mentions of doing things on the BIOS. Gulp! Anyway
- I was ready to remove the card but found a driver CD for Soundblaster so put that
in thinking it was the sound card driver - as it was installing I realised it was
just the drivers for the speakers I had bought. I never actually installed this when
I plugged in the speakers initially (and they worked fine with whatever was on the
PC). Anyway I thought this won't work as its not the driver for the sound card just
the speakers - and as far as I could see (though maybe I missed it) XP hadn't found
the sound card. God this is going on - OK - long story shorter - after install it
said updating drivers - and sound came back. Not sure if the software was clever
enough to search PC to see what sound card was on board and would normally override
any existing drivers.

probably your card is so old for XP. Try to install it manually via "Add Hardware

Hello, I am wondering if you can shed any light on my Canon MP730 usb communication
problem. I've been using this excellent multi-function machine for about 5 months
with my e-machine, until the e-machine's power supply destroyed it's motherboard.
I now use a new Dell Dimension 3000, and it communicates fine with my other usb
devices, but not with the MP730. I've tried all the usual solutions (uninstalling
drivers, reinstalling drivers, trying different usb ports), tested the usb cable
(works fine with my other scanner), removed other printer & scanner drivers.. all
without help. I just downloaded MP730 drivers from Canon's support web pages, hoping
they might have some updates which will help.. but haven't had time to try this yet.
Thanks for any insight you might have. Brad in Sacramento, CA.

XP does not recognize my Canon MP730 (multifunction machine)

Although I've not dealt with any conflicts between Canon and Dell's hardware, so
would need to really research the problem you have if it happened to me, I can give
one bit of advice, about the nature of readers at forums such as this one.
Don't tag a new reply onto a three year old thread. It will be ignored by enough
of the readers to reduce the odds of the right person reading it. Start your own
new message thread instead. And when you describe your experience, and your various
attempts to make the device work, add in the EXACT error messages you've gotten along
the way. That will help.

Thread's too old, too long!

If you have a problem that you would like help with, do not add your complaint to
the middle of an old thread where hardly anyone will see it. Write your own new
message, including capitalization, punctuation, paragraph breaks, and none of the
idiotic juvenile IM slang crap.
Add the details about the system affected, the trouble- shooting attempts performed
so far, the exact words of any error messages, and when you are done, if you wrote
as many as five sentences, you need to check off the "Preserve Spacing" box at the
bottom, ignoring the bad advice there.

I am new to these forums and obviously would only be here because i have an anoying
problem that no one has been able to solve. As for where i write my message,I started
at the top of the box as instructed....not in the middle where it can't be read. There
is also no ideotic slang crap,as you put it.I understand the purpose of this forum....to
discus PC problems and seek help.
Thanks for your reply.

I also have a Dell, it's 3000 I think, and I rebooted Windows XP and now my sound
won't work and the cd's do exactly the same thing.. reads the songs and then they
turn red and won't play. In addition, my screen resolution is stuck at 16bit and
it's not recognizing my drivers I suppose?? I have no idea? If anyone can help,
I WOULD BE SOOOOO HAPPY!!

Hi Darrell.
How do I do this: Does your mainboard have onboard sound? you must disable that
in the bios.
