I386 is a folder on the XP setup disk. Asms is a folder in that folder. Is E the destination drive. Or the sorce drive. Try cleaning the disk.

Can you copy the CD to a directory on the hard drive first. This would help determine
if the CD is really defective. If there is a problem, you should not be able to copy
the files. Also, if this is a new purchase, you might ask for an exchange.

You are not copying a program but entire directories. What steps are you using to
copy the i386 to your computer and where are you copying it.

In your original post, you mentioned that you were having difficulty installing XP
from your CD. My reply was that you might have a defective CD and recommeded copying
it to your computer. Those are the files and directories you want to copy. I would
not necessarily copy it to the Program directory. You can make a WinXP directory
and copy the entire CD there. Likely this is more than you will need but at least
you can determine if any files can't copy.

If you can't copy files from your source CD, you simply have a defective one. Ask
whoever sold it to you if they can replace it. Not much else you can do with defective
media.

Bob.

I realize this post comes late: Same problem, yet I knew I was having problems with my motherboard ... the CD-ROM is not seen on a reboot, but only after a powerdown and a 4-5 secnd wait for the powr supply to drain down. I couldn't boot from the CD and was using floppies to install. The error message comes after a reboot abd the computer cannot see the CDROM. My disk was brand new from MS direct and was not in any way defective. After the powerdown, and the reboot I was able to complete all. Good luck as the reasons for the CD ROM disappearing can be many. Try a complete power down reboot. ------------------

I had the same problem, but found out a little more about it. It would seem that the cd/dvd drives are seen differently during setup. When I received the error, I placed my CD into the other drive, re-booted, and setup took off where it left off and ran fine. Hope this helps.

Bob, first let me tell you that you are a patient person and helpful. I have been trying to load XP Pro on an E-Machine that came with a home edition. I have received the same error over and over. The response about taking the cd out of the drive and putting it into the other drive (such as DVD) sounded reasonable. I am going to try that this weekend. Also, I am going to copy the Pro setup disk into a directory on my hard drive first. What are your feelings on loading Pro over Home edition instead of removing home edition? Thanks, Bobbie

Don't know if this helps but here it goes. I bought a new motherboard and processor and had to reload xp home edition. Some kernal error on reboot after the new motherboard, anyways all was going well after a format of my harddrive and install of xp when a box popped up. It said please insert windows xp home edition in cd rom drive and the file it was looking for was 1386. I had to browse the cd and find the file and the installation proceeded. I had to do this for about 10 other files and browse to find each one of them. Not a clue why I had to do this but it loaded up fine and so far all is working ok. If you have windows xp home edition and not sp1 it won't let you reinstall it because windows won't let you go back to a previous version. The errors on installtion happened at about the 26 minutes left part of the install. Hope this helps but again don't know why I had to do it that way in the first place.

The link to the i386 error worked for me. It wasnt easy. If you are not familiar with regedit, it would be worth the while to find someone who is and can complete the steps. It might take several trys. Another thing i did was copy the I386 file from the hologramed xp pro cd to a disk. I dont have a floppy so I had to search for the correct files on my dvd drive / i 386 burnt copy. I had to keep flip flopping the cdrom and dvd rom to get all the correct files. Look for the file its missing. And I suggest printing out the windows error page I linked. That info is key. Keep it with your xp-chokenpro.cd for the next time. We did this with a maxtor 40 and a western digital 160 and it worked. This is linked to broken cdrom we were given when we bought this crap. AfroEngineering? This worked on an emachines t-3085. Im guessing its a POS. Its a f***ing shame that they let computers like mine into the mainstream. I paid out the ass for XP PRO and got no f888in support. Good thing I have another puter online. Microsoft sucks I want an update from e-machines AND microsoft..... Hardware only. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=307654 ZZ motherloader longhorn home, not

Yes, I had the same problem. It has something to do with the CD drive. Mine was an E-Machines with a CD-RW/DVD drive. The solution was to swap out the drive with an old drive and it continued on from that point without a problem.

I had a slightly different solution to this problem. I was installing XP from a CD I had burned from an ISO I downloaded from eOpen. I re-burned the CD with the setting "Disk at Once" instead of the default which allowed more files to be added later. I am not sure if this parameter fixed the problem or just re-burning the CD, but it worked perfectly.

my solution was to pull the hard drive out of the computer, copy the I386 folder to the hard drive. when I reinstalled the hard drive back into the computer and rebooted I of course got the same error but i was able to type the path of the I386 folder. I got 22 different errors looking for the the XP CD but all I did each time was point to the I386 folder. system is up and running with out issue. I hope this helps.

My resolution was a little simpler. As soon as you get the error, click Shift-f10. Then run mmc.exe and add the snap-in for computer management. In device manager downgrade your CDR driver to the generic cd-rom driver when using the upgrade driver wizard. This worked for me and allowed the installation to continue.

I had the same problem installing Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron Mini 10. The resolution was changing the file path from CDRom0:\I386\asms to D:\I386\asms. It asked for other files and I pasted that same file path over and over until it got past that part of the setup.
