"WinMessengerService"...did you disable that??not the instant messenger bs....if
that doesnt do it, then you,d better get a good firewall cuz you have ports open
big time....go here and check...www.grc.com...look into "shields up" etc...

If you want to stop getting pop ups, you can do the following.
1) activate your xp-integrated firewall (and manually block ports),
2) get the tool "Popupstopper Pro" which you can manually activate and deacitvate
in your internet browser -> really efficient tool, or
3) download an alternative internet browser such as "Opera" or "Mozilla". I'm not
quite sure about Mozilla, but I know that Opera has an integrated "refuse pop ups"
function. -> all you need to do then, is define this internet browser as your default
browser...
Good luck!

Do you get messenger pop ups or html pop ups. If you are getting html pop ups you
probably have some spyware on your machine?
Download Ad-aware
Download Popup Stopper Companion
If they are still the messenger pop ups
Download a firewall...or turn the messenger service off.

Mozilla blocks all pop-ups and pop-unders (by choice, of course)

Surefire way to stop those Pop-Ups
Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at 8:44 am Posted by Messenger Manager
(2 messages posted)
These messages are annoying, beyond belief because you dont even need to do anything
to receive them. However, disabling the Messenger Service may not be the answer!
go to sellertools.com and download the Messenger Manager! This program will ensure
that you do not see any of unwanted messages ever again, unless you choose to look
at them.
Messenger Manager will filter all incoming Messenger messages and save only the messages
that contain words you deem to be important. For instance, if your antivirus alerts
you to a new virus by popping up a message that says New Virus found on your computer,
or your System Administrator alerts you to potential downtime by saying, 'Scheduled
Dowtime on xx/xx/xxxx', you could have these message saved by entering the word "Virus"
or "Scheduled" in your searchlist. Then all messages that contain either of those
words would be saved to a Passed messages list where you can read them at your convenience!
Works great and is guaranteed to save you the headache of closing pop-up after pop-up.

to get rid of messenger pop-ups, this what you have to do...
goto control panal
then adminstrative tools
then click on services
then look for messenger, right click and go to properties, service status click stop,
and above that startup type, set to manual, good luck

Stopping Windows Messenger Services will only stop the popups that come in thru ports
controlled by it; Netbios 135, 137-139, and 445; it won't control web-based pop-ups.
Those popups when you are on the internet come thru browsers port 80. Something
like Pop-Up-Stopper, POW, or integrated modules in other products can help with these.
If you get pop-ups when not on the web, or a large amount of them, you might have
another problem...spyware. Lavasoft Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destroy can detect
and remove these modules so you can get some peace.

I recently started getting these random ads popping up when I didn't even have a
browser open. (I have cable)
I did some research and ended up installing Ad Aware, which is freeware. It located
no less than seventeen registry entries, files, cookies, and even a complete directory
that were responsible, and with its assistance, I deleted them and then updated my
firewall. I've also pretty much completely denied Internet Explorer any access
to the 'net at all. (I use Netscape...)
The directory that Ad Aware found was called "cydoor" and this is the "parking area"
for ads that Cydoor.com sends to your computer if you are using certain Cydoor enabled
software.
I would love to see a DOS attack on Cydoor, or better yet, I would love to see all
its owners found guilty of child pornography charges, as there is NOTHING, and I
mean NOTHING, that I hate more than internet spam ads!
Hell isn't unpleasant enough for these clowns.
Get Ad Aware and clean house!

Your answer sounds more complicate then anything else. Sorry, maybe it's so only
for me:
1." Messenger Manager will filter all incoming Messenger messages and save only the
messages
>that contain words you deem to be important" - Are you kidding? Could you make a
list of your... "words that deem to be important"? Lucky one :) I am still curious
about that possibility! Maybe I didn't get the idea, please lighten me!
2. I don't see yet the connection between what you said before and "For instance,
if your antivirus alerts
>you to a new virus by popping up a message (...) you could have these message saved
by entering the word "Virus" or "Scheduled" in your searchlist. Then all messages
that contain either of those words would be saved to a Passed messages list where
you can read them at your convenience"
Anyway I didn't understand what's the benefit of reading them in a different place...
3. If I've understood well you are only changing the place where the messages would
be placed (in case I am able to sort them after that list (see 1!)! To have them
on my computer just in case I want to look at them. What about I don't want to receive
them at all; wasn't that the question?

I'm fairly new to this stuff so apologies if this is a really stupid question but:
I followed your instructions to disable the messenger service and was wondering,
what happens to the ports that it controls once you've disabled it? Do they remain
open and if they do can someone get access to my computer over the net?
Also, can anyone recommend a beginner's guide to this kind of stuff (internet security,
spam etc)?
Cheers,
C.

We are experiencing the same problem with IE on W2K. Unfortunately, Ad Aware did
not work on a customer's PC. Networking handles the firewalls so the Help Desk has
no access to changing anything on the firewalls. Can someone suggest something else?

Hi Steve
Did you manage to stop the pop up messages. Like you, I tried the following:-
Open the Services window (services.msc).
Double-click the Messenger entry in the list.
Click Stop to close the service.
Select Disabled from the Startup type list to prevent it from loading automatically
the next time Windows starts.
Close the Services window when you're done.
and it did not work. Any ideas?
Regards.

message quote from "http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp"
last note on the bottom.
You can also disable the Messenger Service in Windows XP. When you disable the messenger
service, it is no longer available for receiving legitimate messages, such as administrative
alerts and notifications from antivirus programs. Be sure to talk with your system
administrator before taking this action if your computer is part of a corporate network.

If your on a broadband connection without a firewall/router then it's your own fault.
Routers are not expensive, and they'll save you hundreds in repairs due to the fact
that your computer(s) will no longer be openly exposed to the net. I've honestly
never ran into the problem in this article, but then again, I've been using a firewall/router
since DSL was new to the market ( at that time, router WERE expensive, but that was
then, and this is now, and that no longer holds true ). Do yourself a favor, get
a router. Then all these little problems will go away. Simple as that. See, it's
careless people that make me alot of money... afterall.. I'm a technician. so I
tell ya what... don't get a router... instead... bring your machine to me so I can
charge you $100 per hour to fix it. ;)

free there also. That will stop pop ups. www.zonealarm.com has a free version of
firewall that will keep the gray box ads down - but you've got to clean your machine
before it can work. Good luck and make sure you're running current virus definitions.

Help,
I am running XP (a few weeks ago)
2 days ago something got onto my h drive and i am getting sick amounts of pop ups,
i never had an issue before in 15yrs.
It is affecting more than just my screen - i have already done the "messenger" in
service deal - my Services window only displays "messenger" not "winblah blah").
I am hoping this is the correct one? Also how do you get rid of what is already on
your harddrive?
thanks in advance.

Yes, you'll still get Norton popups and such. Those programs do not use the messenger
service to send alerts.

Hi there,
I am not quite sure when everyone is talking about the Messenger "Services Window"
is located. Is it in control panel somewhere or do I have to type it in the Start\Run
menu?? Im willing to try this otherwise jus keep on reading for some other kind
of help. I am not willing to pay for thsi nuisance to stop. sometime si believe those
who created this mess in the first place make the solution just to earn a quick buck..
so no no to that.
thanx,
Meekal.

To get rid of pop ups...
Go to www.download.com and download ad-aware 6.0 by lavasoft. Install and run. This
program is designed to search out and delete all files that contain spyware (which
usually translate to pop ups). After installing it, YOU MUST UPDATE THE SEARCH FILE
SO THAT ALL NEW SPYWARE FOUND AFTER THE PROGRAM WAS MADE CAN BE FOUND AND REMOVED!
This is an important step, otherwise your pop ups will continue. Also, I use google
toolbar (found at google.com) which block pop ups. Its a great tool and its totally
free and doesn't add anything but a tool bar in your IE window.... Hope this helps
Ben

Yeah, Kazaa is horrible for adware. Use Limewire, it's not loaded with that stuff.
