''network cable unplugged''

I have attempted to network my computers together. both running windows xp. I have
both systems running into a router, my cable modem goes into the router also. the
cable modem works for both systems but i cannot connect them to each other. A friend
told me to buy another lan card and stick it into my main computer and hook the other
one directly to it. I did this and now i get an error telling me that a cable is
unplugged. I know the cable is ok because it works with the router. what in the world
have i done?

You connected two lan cards with a cable that is not crossed-out...
Standard Ethernet cables can only be used to connect lan cards to hubs.
However, your original setup should work anyway... Check your TCP/IP-configuration.
Do you really use a router? It surely not is a hub or switch??

You only need one LAN card per machine - both will connect ethernet cables to the
router. The ethernet from the cable modem will connect to the "main" port on the
router. A "network cable is unplugged" message usually means just that: something
is not tight. Also do not directly connect the two computers together - that is what
the router is for. Make sure you have lights on either end of your cables lit - that
indicates connectivity. Then reboot modem to get new IP FOR the router (from the
internet DHCP server.) Reboot your machines as well, so they will gain a new IP FROM
the router.

To summarize:
a) you need a differently wired 'crossover' cable to connect two PC's directly to
each other. The cable that works with your router SHOULDN'T work for what your using
it for. Therefore there's no signal, to which your computer responds by saying it's
unplugged.
b) you shouldn't have to do what your friend said, which is a method for people who
DON'T have a router. It may even have side effects. The router should meet your
network needs. Turn off any XP firewalls on your connections to the routers. If
that's not sufficient, have a look under networking on this site or the one GM suggested.
(If you've turned off services, you may need to turn some back on. Or it may be
your security settings...etc., blah blah...)

Faced the same problem with XP Home. What I have done was to uninstall the network
driver and restart the system. Problem will be solved.

When visiting some sites (e.g., Orbitz.com), and when uploading some files to email,
I get the following message: "Local Area Connection 7 / A network cable is unplugged."
I am not a part of a network, nor do I need the capability. I found the Drivers/Network
folder, and it includes numerous subfolders. Do I uninstall everything, or what?
Thanks.

I am getting the same message when trying to connect two computers directly. As I
understand it, with a crossover cable you should be able to connect two computer
directly through their ethernet cards, yet with both my normal ethernet cables and
a crossover cable I still get the "A cable is Unplugged" message. Does anybody know
why?

I am getting the same message.
I set up a LAN for a friend through a HUB about 6 months ago. He has an XP machine
and a 98SE machine. I set up the LAN and it was working fine.
He had to take his XP machine in and have the hard disk reformatted. He reinstalled
XP and had me come back out to re-set up his LAN.
Now, however, I get a "Network Cable Unplugged" message and when I run the network
setup wizard I can't set up the network. I am using the exact same hardware as before.
Can someone shed some light on my problem?
Thanks,
Jim

Remember to use a cross over cable when going from NIC to NIC...
