Did you by any chance tell the system to run for performance? That usually puts
you in classic view and takes a lot of the resource-eating goodies away.
Tools->folder properties....and you can probably find it from there..

No, it is running for best appearance.
I did briefly change the default movie player to Real, but I changed it back to WMP.

E-mail me and I will e-mail you the monster .reg file that should restore all your
video filetypes to the 'factory settings." It's too much data to post here.
