I have a question about Get rid of Shortcut Residue:

how can you get rid of the "past items "in the taskbar menu. START/PROPERTIES/TASKBAR/CUSTOMIZE

Sounds like you already found it.... just hit "Clear."

There's no clear button there.

You can only do it by going into the registry and blowing away all the hide/show
data.

Start Menu, Run, type: regedit

navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

delete the IconStreams and PastIconStreams binaries on the right hand side

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL > Processes tab > select explorer.exe and click End Process
To get your desktop back, choose New Task and type: explorer

Go back to taskbar properties and redo your customization.
