Windows XP Home will not start after installing an Intel D845WN Motherboard.

Win XP Home was pre-installed and I have 2 recovery discs. I originally used an Epox
EP-4B2M motherboard which I changed to an Intel D845WN m/board, which ran with no
problems. Due to a 'friends' tinkering I was advised to use the recovery discs. I
re-installed the Epox m/board and used the discs. Everything works ok until I try
to re-use the Intel board.
Win XP will not start. The computer runs through POST until it gets to a screen asking
me if I would like to start Windows normally, use a previous configuration which
works, safe mode etc. None of these work and I just get back to the above screen.
I have now gone back to the Epox m/board which works ok.
How can I get the Intel one to work as this is the one which I wish to use as it
is a full sized board with 6 PCI slots and not 3.

Your new board will mean a new install and activation. Since you were only supplied
recovery discs, you are in a real dilema. Recovery CDs are only meant to work with
the hardware that they were shipped with. To change MBs you will need to reinstall
with a full version of XP which you will have to purchase I am afraid. Sorry, it's
not good news.. look at this page for an example of swapping MBs under XP: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,11715,00.asp

Gather all the information on your copy of Win XP, including your ident code, which
HP should have provided. Contact Microsoft and ask for a replacement disk, that HP
didn't give you a valid XP disk and, since you HAD to replace the MB, you need a
full copy of XP. Microsoft should provide one.
In the meanwhile, contact HP, as well as the dealer who sold the computer, by letter
and tell them that their recovery discs are not sufficient, you PAID for and want
a full copy of WinXP. Send a copy ot that letter to the Consumer affairs office of
you State Attorney General and to the BBB. Note on the letter to HP and vendor where
copies are going. We can not make the manufacturers responsible unless we play hardball.

Hi Tom
The good news is once you have a bootable install disk,
you can just pop it in the drive and "repair" your original installation...
@ the first screen choose "install" NOT repair...
@ the next screen(after the drivers and install files load)
you should recieve a warning that the install program has detected a previous installation,
do you want to repair it?
at this screen choose repair.
The install disk will fix whats wrong and return you to your working installation
WITHOUT having to re-install all your software and settings.
a really neet trick!

Will it work that easily with a new motherboard? Certainly hope so. The HP furnished
repair disk certainly won't do the job.

Sometimes it will work with an XP CD made by MS and not the system vendor. However
sometimes it won't.. It won't work with a restore CD made by the system vendor for
sure. Neither MS or the system vendor will promise a successfull repair in any case..
You can only try and see but always make sure your data is backed up first.. Oh
and BTW, you won't get a "free" CD from MS to fix your problem.. It will cost you!
