Lets begin by telling you what the problem is: These games are using an illegal function call in them. Quite recently, I have had the same error when using the C++ program tools. Each time I call up a file, it says 'Abnormal function termination'. This means that a file is missing and a warning flag was sent out. If the file is there, I'll try to find the problem with Windows. Try looking at the file called KERNEL32.DLL (in the windows directory). It may need to be updated (not sure).

Go to www.google.com and select advanced search, type Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library in the space for exact phrases. You will find a lot of dialog on the subject and, if you are patient, some downloadable library files that could help. In any case you will know a lot more about the subject than you really wanted to find out. Happy hunting.

Problems such as you describe are virtually impossible to pinpoint exactly, even with hands on approach. The links in the two posts on possible solutions cover pretty much the usual problem areas. If none of these help, there is a good chance that you have problems with your installation of XP. Run and antivirus and install Spybot and use it. It will clear out virtually all of your outside trouble sources. Then reinstall XP if you still have problems.

this is what to do. download Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library from http://www.david-taylor.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/software/runtime.html when you go here the program is going to be right at the bottom. download that and after downloading extract this file to the folder you are trying to open.

Hi Joe, I'm having the same problem as you with Turbotax--Runtime Error! abnormal program termination. Have you found a way to solve it yet? I've tried all the advise offered by others with the same problem but with error messages stopping different software, none of it works so far. This is starting to look like an XP problem which has migrated to other platforms.

As several other people have stated, I also am having this problem with Counter-Strike, Unreal 2 runs fine. I have read many solututions and have tried them all. All failed. The last step I did was to update the Runtime Library files. I DL'd VB V6.0sp5. Still no help. Anyone else tried anything different than what was posted here?

a possible solution

hi i had the same problems running my own program that i wrote. The problem occured becuase i was running a program that used a file that was in a different directory. it could be that if a game, or turbotax were to be installed not in the default directory, this same problem could be what's happening. if so, the solution should be to install into the default directory. good luck shuki

I have also been looking for a solution for this problem. I posted the following on my website.

I have tried EVERYTHING to get it to work properly, but nothing is fixing this problem. I am trying to run Counter-Strike 1.5 using OpenGL. I recently got a new hard-drive, and thus lost all my drivers and settings. I know I had a similar problem when I first got my video card, but I can't remember how I got it to work. The problem started by just freezing and skipping the sound like a scratched CD, and now it's giving me this error:

Counter-Strike: cstrike.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x0f8814n4" referenced memory at "0x0000002". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

My system is:

- Athlon 1.1gHz
- Chaintech GeForce4 MX 440
- 256MB RAM
- Windows XP

I have:

- reinstalled the out-of-the-box Chaintech drivers
- installed the updated Chaintech drivers from their website
- installed the drivers from the nVidia website
- turned off v-sync
- installed DirectX 9.0a
- installed all Windows updates, including SP1
- updated my CPU to AGP controller driver
- uninstalled Counter-Strike and reinstalled
- punched myself in the face a few times

I understand there is some sort of XP-Athlon-DirectX problem, but I don't know how this is resolved. However, I am also trying to run CS in OpenGL so it shouldn't be the issue. However, I have come to a brick wall. I don't know what to do next.

And finally:

I think I fixed it! I've only played a few rounds, but I had no problems at all. From what I can gather, the nVidia drivers weren't installing properly.

I uninstalled the drivers from the add/remove list (which is strange as I'd never seen them there before) and deleted the directory in my C drive. When I was uninstalling drivers, my resolution wasn't changing, thus leading me to believe my drivers weren't actually uninstalling correctly. After I did that and rebooted, my resolution was at 800x600 which it should have been but hadn't been changing to previously. I also had an nVidia Media Center icon in my system tray which wasn't there before. I once again turned off v-sync.

I played about 5 rounds no problems, and noticed that the game play was much smoother as it has previously always flickered white when there was a lot of movement on the screen. Hopefully, this will be the end of my troubles.

Conclusion: Do NOT install Chaintech drivers. The nVidia XP driver I installed is located here.

I actually got this same error tonight, but only after playing for about an hour. I guess that is better than after every two rounds.

I get the same "C++ Library Runtime Error" although for explorer.exe. I went to a LAN yesterday and downloaded a latest MOHAA patch, also I installed UNREAL 2003, I also installed CloneCD. I dont not have Counterstrike installed. This problem usually occurs within 2 minutes of booting up when I click on something, as in open explorer (obviously). I run a AMD ATHON 2100+, 512mb,60 GIG Maxtor, GE4 FORCE MX440, WinXP. Any ideas, solutions? email me donovanglass@hotmail.com. its driving me crazy!!!

Possible Cause: Driver Issue
Friday, July 11, 2003 at 9:58 pm
Posted by Gazz (1 messages posted)

I found that the cause of these errors can often be a driver issue. I receive the same errors running nvidia detonator (v 44.xx) drivers. I'm assuming earlier drivers may have the same problem, howevre the solution is to try use direct3d instead of OpenGL or visa versa.

Hello, I recently built my own computer and had that message to when playing games, like neverwinter nights mainly. I fixed my own electronic equipment and computer software problems as they occured. Took me 2 hours to fix that error microsoft visual c++ runtime. It is related to your motherboard and or software conflicts. Both these things will give this error. If you own a asus motherboard via chipset you must check for bios updates and flash it. This was what I did to fix it. I had a version 1010 bios and used the asus update bios flash utilty which came with my motherboard drivers and easily flashed it. This fixed all myvideo card gliche problems and microsoft runtime errors. Make sure the bios drivers are the correct ones or your computer willl get messed up , but you can always reflash it to fix it if you do mess up. Second you will get that error if you have mcfee virus scanner enabled and microsoft outlook 2002 software installed. There is a bugg issue warning about this topic in the xp help search library, just type that error in the help menu and look for it. It wil explain the bugg. I repair computers alot so im sure this will fix problems. Also install the most up to date direct x version and get all the most recent drivers for your video card. Goodluck

yes, i noticed i started to get these runtime errors when i switched from a ati card to an nvidia one. i thought i might have downloaded something bad in the past so i decided to do a clean win xp pro install. i kept getting the same errors after updating windows with all critical updates and such. i've flashed my mobo with the latest bios revision and still nothing, so i am guessing it has something to do with the nvidia driver or the card itself not getting along with my mobo. i have a few other friends that get the same error. we all have differently built systems, with the exception of the VIA chipset. go figure

I tryed all of these tips what people said! Nothing changed;( I have MB (Asus A7A266) and Asus GF2 (nvidia chipset) video. Tips what i did: Bios update, installed new directx9, changed bios settings, tryed different nvidia video drivers, installed Ali drivers. Nothing happened: problem was still with games. So i downloaded new video driver from Asus website ---> not from nvidia website! Installed and all games working fine now:))) So whatever video card u are using try to install real drivers to it. Doesnt matter that card using nvidia chipset still try to use another driver like i did.

Well here's yet another person with the same problem........ :/ I originally started with a radeon9000pro, but the thing kept crashing saying that the driver was failing. I have now changed my g/card to an nvidia fx5600 256mb, with my original ASUS A7V333 mobo VIA KT333 chipset all with the latest drivers. I'm running on an athlon 2400 with 1200ddrram.... NONE of my games work, they all flicker then eventually shut themselves down within a couple of minutes with the C++ Runtime Error etc etc. I'm pretty annoyed as the place that I got this machine from keep assuring me all is fine with my machine.......... hmmmm I think not. I've tried the various attempts at solving this problem from this board and none have helped me, sadly... anything else out there?? :( Thanks guys

kirves is right I've pinpoined that this runtime error links to my video card. It works fine in software mode (running HL, CS, etc...) but when I switch to OpenGL mode it gives the error. Run updates, and get the RIGHT video card to use.

Had a client with the same problem last week. I ran several diagnostic programs on his pc, and it turned out to be bad RAM. Try replacing your ram sticks. You can also get a program which will create a boot disk to test your ram at www.memtest86.com

I checked the current BIOS offered for my motherboard (Biostar M7VIT Pro) at the maker's website and there was an update to address this specific issue with the nVidia FX5600 chipset, which is my current GPU. After flashing the motherboard BIOS, it now works like a charm. Changing the adapter driver, AGP version, and the multitude of other suggested fixes didn't solve the problem. So format a floppy and consider flashing the BIOS. I'm a happy Counterstriker again!

I too have had the same problem with various games. All was working fine til i decided to clean up my pc and re-install windows. As it seems to have been estblished there is some kind of compatability problem with NVIDIA cards and VIA chipsets. What this is I dont know but you can bet that niether company will take responsibility. I just uninstalled the via AGP drivers and all seems fine now. Maybee ill be back after more testing. Cheers for the help guys.

this is humor, now even the asus site returns a runtime error ;)

i'ts really strange that just masses of people seem to experience these (opengl?)
runtime errors and none of the major companies recognize them.

i think mine started after i just had installed steam....

i also reinstalled my nvidia drivers + directx but to no luck. :(

Actually Tony, what If your Bios is current or there are no updates and you still recieve this problem, you'll probably find updating your runtime library or in particular your msvcrt.dll will solve the issue, dont replace your system msvcrt.dll unless you back it up first, best to grab the latest and drop it in the root directory of the actual game your having problems with.

well i was getting runtime error and abnormal file termination and all that crap too... i use a geforce 2 mx...for counter strike and i had just formatted my hard disk and all that .. wht i did is i totally uninstalled the nvidia driver and reinstalled and new one...it's 30.82_winxp file version is 2.11.15.0 and now NO MORE ABNORMAL FILE TERMINATION and my cs works openGL.....the thing with this abnormal file termination i came to the conclusion that it's due to ure video driver. that's wht causes that termination error.... try running ure cs on software and direct 3d and c if it works....if that the case then change the driver and download the one im using and u should b fine

I had this probelm when I played Half-life/CS/Steam. It almost convinced me to buy a new computer, but I discovered a solution partly due to this forum. It seems that OPENGL is causing the trouble. If you switch to software or directx then the game runs fine. So give it a try then post your results.

Got Call of duty, on some forums, reinstallation of directx and install the the game of the default directory works. for some, installation of the latest drivers works. Im guessing it has to do something about the directx. also with the video card drivers. will update the video card first then try again. lastly, reinstall os again. will post here.

Alternative S O L U T I O N

I have a possible solutions for this problem. This is the case: I have been playing Call of Duty since last December and everything was fine until about a month ago when I started to get these C++ Runtime Errors out of the blue. After just seconds or sometimes a few minutes of playing the game first got unplayably sticky, then began the sound loops and finally the game crashed glamourously with this error. I have read a number of threads concerning the issue and trust me, I have tried it all, including punching myself in the face several times. No luck. Then I read about this AGP speed solution and decided to try it. Actually I did not change the AGP speed (I kept it in 4x) but just turned the AGP Fast Write off and VOILA, that did the trick. At least after an intensive 30 minute bad-ass testing Call of Duty rolls nice n smooth. AND with ALL the details set to maximum. CoD has never looked this nice and has never rolled this smooth before. I also recommend to use manufacturers drivers instead of the ones from chipset provider: guaranteed compatability. I hope this is helpful for someone else too. My system configuration: WinXP Pro, AMD Athlon TB 1400MHz, 512 MB DDR-RAM, Elsa Gladiac 920 GeForce3 64MB, Epox 8K7A+.

I bought Call of Duty the other day, Installed it and this lame Error popped up (I trust you all know the one) So I decided to send an E-mail to Activisions Tech Support center, their Bot replied me a message and told me to go to this Error Postings Answer page, so I did it's URL is: https://activision.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/activision.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=11672&p_created=1067901817&p_sid=d4QOes6h&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PWRmbHQmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTQzMiZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PUNhbGwgb2YgRHV0eSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPXNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMT0mcF9wcm9kX2x2bDI9JnBfcGFnZT01&p_li= So I went there, found that above URL and read the Answer, so I did what it told me to do, I updated my Graphics Card Driver (Geforce4 MX440 with AGP8x) at this URL: http://download1.nvidia.com/Windows/56.64/56.64_winxp2k_english.exe Installed it, and then I had an ipifini, I believe the Error is due to Direct X 9.0b incompatibility with Geforce Graphics Cards that where not made when Version 9.0b was made, so I downgraded my Direct X to Version 9.0 and ran the game set my Screen Resolution to 800 x 600 as instructed to do in the Activision Answer and started it up, and all's Sweet. I hope my above explanation helps ANYONE out, if not drop me an E-Mail at: Brentis87@Hotmail.com or add that E-mail to your MSN Messenger List or if you have AOL add WARRIORofSA. Later.

I had replaced my older XFX Geforce 5200 for a newer Asus Geforce FX 5700 V9570TD 256mb graphics card. I have downloaded the latest drivers for this card from the Nvidia site. I followed the instructions in the install manual as well. When I installed this new card I had experienced problems with the following games, CoD, MOHAA and RTCW. All booted me back to my desktop with an error message "Runtime Error - C:/Program Files/EAGAMES/MOHAA/moh_Breakthrough.exe". I looked up the problem on the net and this forum gave me the solution. I went into my BIOS and disables the AGP 4X Mode. Since then I was able to play Call of Duty with no probs. MOHAA Breakthrough however still kicked me out but i went to "Add and Remove Programs" and did a repair instead of remove and since then I have been playing CoD and MOHAA without the errors occuring. MOHAA is however a little sluggish with big fight scene so if anyone can assit with a solution to that I would be grateful. I hope this helped and thanks to all who gave solutions.

So, i have had the same problem. I've got a Mainboard with VIA chipset. I got the problem fixed! You will have to download the latest VIA-Chipset-Drivers, because the ones from Microsoft aren't the best! Get it from http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403 After installing the driver you will have to restart your computer and then you can enjoy your games :D Sry for bad English - german again ^^

Hi, I have the same problem and i figured out that the problem is on the video card (MSI G force fx 5200 128mb) because i have my old video card and i switched them and the games just work perfectly but with bad grafics. If u have another video card try to switch them to see what happens.

TinTiin !!:) MESSAGE D'ERREUR: ============================================= Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library : _____________________________________________ (X) Runtime error ! Merci. Cordialement, teojasm1(atwanadou)

How many of you have tried another or new video card? I have the same error when playing games such as Call of Duty and have tried upgrading the VIA chipset drivers etc. Still didn't work. I tested my RAM with a boot test. One of the modules was bad--removed it--still get the error message. My theory is we have had a lot of power surges this past summer--I think it knocked out the one RAM modules and the Video Card so next thing to try is replacing the video card. This has got to be the most frustrating error i have ever had or seen on a PC.

Well, this is so frustrating. I replaced my videocard with a brand new one and still the same error message in games. My new theory is the VIA shipset on the motherboard has problems. Setting the AGP speed from 4x to 2x works --but why have i been able to run at 4x all this time with no problems until now? Is there anyone out there who can help?

SpamFighter stops Warhammer Dawn of War and Half Life 2 working with the C++ This Error "Abnormal Termination" will happen when one program has access to a program or libary that it needs so you can always use filemon "www.sysinternals.com" to see where the program fails and this might lead you to what is conflicting. As to replacing your motherboards I would probably try to work out which driver or utility was loaded first.

The problem usually resides in your chipset driver. It doesn't matter if you have an nforce or via chipset, if you're not using the latest drivers, the problem can occur in any game. I had the same problem for Half Life 2 but I updated my nforce drivers to 5.10 and no problems now. I updated my video card's drivers before (nvidia fx 5950ultra) and it did nothing beneficial.

OK, I installed a Mad Dog 5200 128 mb board because my MX440 wasn't "Acceptable" to EA for MOH Pacific Assault. I used it for about a day with CODUA Multi with no problems. That night I downloaded several demo utility programs and the next time I ran CODUA I got that dreaded c++ runtime error. Well, thinking that it had to be something I loaded, I unistalled everything. Still no luck. I read this thread and tried just about everything on it and still no go. I FINALLY put my old MX440 back in and Bingo! Works like a champ! I downloaded the latest nvidia driver and in the "Performance and Quality" window, it has a choice for Call of Duty and several other games. I chose it and everything on line runs extremely smooth. Never know it was only a 64 mb board. But now I cannot play MOH Pacific Assault. Such is life, I guess...

As rediculous as it seems, one way you can consider doing to fix this problem is to remove all your USB slots. This was discussed in another thread and a number of people who have tried removing their USB stuff no longer run in to the runtime errors. So give it a try.

I had the same runtime error popup when I was playing half life 2. It terminated the game. It sucked because I was already at the last level. What I did was simply run nortons windoc. It fixed the problem. The game is now playable again.
