Comment about 'Turn Off the PC-Speaker'

I have a question about Turn
Off the PC-Speaker:
After disabling all sounds, whenever I would move the volume up and down in Volume
Control it would beep when I stopped and/or released the mouse at my desired setting.
In Windows 2k/XP there is a way to disable the beep, go into device manager, select
the "Show hidden devices" option, go to "non plug and play device" find that device
named "Beep" and set it to disabled.
The MS tech support flunky who said it was a motherboard problem should be boiled
in oil for such a blatant lie.
My last 3 PCs, my brothers PC, and all PCs at my job "beep" from the PC speaker whenever
all sounds are disabled. This is very annoying.

I have a reverse problem of a similar nature: Suddenly my windows media files, and
msn messenger files will not play thru my speakers, but are represented by a beep
thru the PC Speaker. All other wave playing plays fine, including AIM and WINAMP,
etc. It is just the windows theme files and MSN Messenger wave files. It's not
a bad thing, but I liked my quips that started and closed with Windows. And I want
to know what shut the sounds off!

I have been looking for this solution forever! Now my problem is that when you stop
moving the slider on teh volume control you are supposed to get a chord shound, not
the PC speaker beeping. This is how you can tell if the volume is set to your liking.
I have never been able to figure out
1) Why it went from a chord to the PC speaker beeping
2) how to get it back to the Chord.wav file
Anyone have any ideas?
At least the beeping is disabled. =]

Frank,
I have what appears to be the same problem: some, but not all, sounds have stopped
playing. Menu clicks still work, but (among others) the Empty recycle bin, Maximize
and Minimize sounds have stopped playing and have been replaced with a system beep.
I thought maybe turning the beep off might turn the sounds back on, but of course
it didn't.
Did you, or anybody, ever find out what the problem was?
Thanks

If volume control in the system tray doesn't give a sound and Default Beep in control
panel sounds is missing, add a key to the registry.
use Regedit to find
HKCU\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default
add another key .Default so it reads
HKCU\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default
Start Sounds and Multimedia in Control panel
Click Default Beep that now is back
Set sound to Ding

This same problem happened to me. Mostly no system sounds, PC beep otherwise. The
problem is that some application (or a registry corruption) caused the (Default)
value of HKEY_CURRENT_USER to be set to something other than (value not set). I simply
highlighted the (Default) entry and hit Delete.

Charles-
I have the problem with the new mail notification whereby I only get the system speaker
beep and not the notify chime that it is set to.
In my registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER ===> AppEvents ===> EventLabels I found an
entry called MailBeep where (Default) is set to New Mail Notification. Is this the
entry I should delete to fix the problem?

Hi All,
Recently, I changed my processor P3 550 Mhz to P2 400 Mhz as the 550 Mhz processor
went faulty.
After this, I installed my sound card and my xp fixed the default drivers for this.
To my surprise the sound card which was working all these days did not give any sound
output. The sound appears to play on my media player but no sound.
When I tried to move the volume sliders on the volume controls, I am getting a beep
from the system speaker...
I tried installing a different sound card but the same problem persists ...
Could anyone help me out .. Is that a registry change that is required?
Thanks
Shankar

My problem with beeping is the very LOUD beep I get when I'm booting up my computer.
Disabling 'beep' in the nonplug n play device doesn't affect it. I just have to
remember to have my external speakers turned off so that the PC speaker's beep isn't
so loud. Very annoying. What's the purpose of making a beep? To tell me that I'm
booting up? I already know that without having to hear a beep.

Yes, mine does this too. This annoys the living **** out of me.
It only does so in games that draw heavily on resources though, not older games.

You guys are probably hitting the too many keys at once to get that PC speaker beep.
Often happens in games when using keyboards that only support a few simultaneous
keypresses.
Solution is to get a new keyboard that supports more keypresses...

The reason why this happens is you are pressing to many keys at once and filling
the input buffer of your device.
Solution:
a) Increase the size of your input buffer, this will allow more key presses to be
sequenced.
b) Press less keys.

I went through device manager and disabled BEEP, so now when I start up my laptop,
it doesn't beep - but I still have a problem. I have a security feature on my laptop
so that when I close it and then re-open it, I have to punch in a password on the
buttons on my screen to get the laptop going again - and every time I punch a number
in, the &@*#ing PC speaker still BEEPS! It's really annoying in the middle of class
- it's as bad as having your cell phone ring. Is there any way, short of tearing
open my laptop and ripping the PC speaker out, that I can completely disable it?
Anyone?

I have this same stupid problem with several of the windows default sounds (Windows
startup and shutdown music, recycle bin, etc.) not playing and the pc volume slider
causing the PC speaker to "beep" instead of the customary "ding" wave file.
I have followed the registry advice listed above and reset the keys but still have
not been to rectify the problem.
Any other ideas? I am not wild about messing with my system BIOS or completly turning
off the PC internal speaker.
I feel like the more I monkey with it the more likely I am to really screw it up!
Thanks all!

Go into Control Panel, then Sounds and Audio Devices, then in the new window that
opens up, go to the "Sounds" tab and select Windows Default as the scheme within
the available pulldown menu. This will cause you to lose your current configuration
unless you save it, but if you're already as annoyed with the beep as you are now,
you wouldn't care less.

if u like me did not solve the problem with the above then u can always turn of th
system speaker and get rid of the annoying sound like this.
Right click on My computer. Go the the hardware manager tab of System Properties.
Click on device manager. System speaker is in the list under system devices. Double
click on system speaker. In the device usage box, there is a setting for enable or
disable.

Perform the following steps to disable your machine's system beep:
1. Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
2. Expand System Tools and select Device Manager.
3. From the View menu, select Show hidden devices.
4. Expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
5. Right-click Beep, and select Properties.
6. Select the Drivers tab.
7. Click Stop. You can also change the start-up type to Disabled so the beep service
never starts.

You marvelous and wonderful person! The beep is gone! I can sleep soundly at night,
not having to have a mini-heart attack every time that infernal beep goes off! Yaaaaaay!

I tried disabling the 'beep' in device manager as you mentioned, it made sense, but
the beep continues. Any other suggestions?

Thank you for this solution. When I log onto citrix and enter the wrong password
my dell vostro 1500 would make the loudest beep I ever heard come out of a laptop
haha. The entire office kept looking at me funny. Now those days are gone.

I tried everything on this list including
Find the "Beep" key on the right-hand side and change the value to "no".
Open up regedit.exe through the run box, and then navigate down to the following
key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound
Find the "Beep" key on the right-hand side and change the value to "no".
what finally worked for me was just muting the pc speaker in the volume control
(you may have to go to the options menu->properties first and show the pc speaker)
I'll go ahead and list some of the other things that may be helpful, even though
many of them are listed here already:
Open up Device Manager by right-clicking on Computer and choosing Properties, then
on the Hardware tab you'll find the button for Device Manager.
Select View \ Show hidden devices from the menu.
Find Non-Plug and Play Drivers in the list, and then right-click on "Beep" and disable
it:
When it prompts you to reboot, select no, and then right-click again and choose Properties
this time. On the Driver tab, change the Startup type to "Disabled" and then click
the "Stop" button if you are able to.

The steps are;
1. Right-click on My Computer
2. On the Hardware tab, click on [Device Manager]
3. On the "View" menu, select "Show hidden devices"
4. Under "Non-Plug and Play Drivers", right-click "Beep"
5. Click "Disable"
6. Answer [Yes] when asked if you really want to disable it
7. Answer [No] when asked if you want to reboot
8. Right-click "Beep" again.
9. Click "Properties"
10. On the "Driver" tab, set the Startup type to Disabled
11. Click [Stop]
12. Click [OK]
13. Answer [No] when asked if you want to reboot
for outlook:
On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Other tab, click Advanced Options.
Select or clear the Provide feedback with sound check box.

I found this beep only happens when Control Panel -> System Sounds -> Sounds is set
to "None".
Try this:
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder.
Don't hit record. Just press SAVE. Name it something like "none.wav".
Set the Default Beep sound to your saved none.wav.
Silence.

This is the perfect solution. It doesn't matter how long ago it was posted. This
is a reference site. And there will always be people having this problem for as long
as Windows (in any version) lives.
Thank you halcyon 1234!
