Question about 'Force Outlook XP to allow EXE file attachments'

I have a question about Force
Outlook XP to allow EXE file attachments:
What if is that link is not there?
When I go into the 10.0 catagory, Outlook is not there. It is in the Software directory,
but then SECURITY is not there.
Any idea ?
Thanks.

It is there on my machine. Are you sure you are looking under the right key? Keep
in mind the folder structure under some of the keys are the same, and you can easily
look under the wrong root folder. I would try that first.

Yes,
I am looking under the correct directory.
I have re-traced my steps 5 times.

I don't use Outlook and I needed to send someone an .exe file. Simple solution -
change the extention to .txt and have the user at the other end rename it once received.

Hello all,
I have followed your suggestion and changed the related Registry setting. it seems
to be successful when I try to send a exe file to myself. however, I suddendly receive
a warrning message today as following:
[Filename: PUBDL.exe, Content-Type: application/octet-stream]
The attachment file in the message has been removed by eManager.
do it means that the file was deleted by company email system? neverthess, my colleague,
working in the same location, do can receive exe file.
what can I do?

Hello all
I had the problem of opening .exe files in Windows XP sp1 and stumbled upon this
thread which offers the solution by giving advice on how to change the settings in
the registry. Luckily, as I and other people found out, the path to the registry
entry was different on my computer than was shown in the thread. The reason I see
it as lucky is 1. I know nothing about the registry and could've easily got myself
into a real mess and 2. After refusing to mess with the registry anymore, I decided
to look further and see if there were any other solutions. It turns out that all
I had to do was to go to OE-TOOLS-OPTIONS-SECURITY-and then uncheck the box about
opening .exe .vbs files etc. I then restarted outlook and succesfuly opned the
.exe file sent to me by my trusted friend. I hope I've posted this message in time
to save people from causing damage to their computers by going into a part of the
computer that should be left alone for people who, unlike myself, know what they're
doing.

Dear all,
thanks for your detailed explanation. but unfortunately, I cannot found the check
box in my outlook XP's security page which you mentioned. I don't know why my OL
has this different with yours. if you are using outlook XP version?

In OE you go to Tools, then Options. In the options menu there are or should be 10
tabs. In the upper tabs are "SPELLING/SECURTY/CONNECTION/MAINTANANCE
and 6 other options in the lower tabs. If you can't see the SECURITY tab there then
I'm sorry, I don't know what to tell you, maybe someone else will know the answer.
If you do find the security tab, click it and you should see "Do not allow attachments
to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" if its checked, uncheck
it.
If you can't see the Security tab, my only guess, and it is only a guess, is that
it could be a different version to the one I use, but I'm no expert sorry :-(

Hello M,
finally I understand why I cannot find the captioned box in my option setting. you
are using Outlook Express(i.e. OE) and I am using Outlook XP to receive and send
email. these two software are different, so I cannot find the check box which you
mentioned. actually, the most strange thing is that the exe suffix attachment would
be blocked when it is sent from outside company, and it would be properly received
when it is sent from inside our company.
anyway, even my question does't solved yet, I very appreciate your patient help.
thanks a lot.

This thread was initially about Outlook XP, not Outlook Express. unfortunately Outlook
cannot be modified as easily as Outlook Express. in fact, as the initial question
indicated, it is impossible to simply go thru tools-->options to change Outlook XP,
hence the need to modify the Registry settings.

Microsoft has a knowledgebase article describing this very issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318515
The article references Outlook 2000. However, if you're using Outlook XP, all you
need to do is change the "9.0" subkey to read "10.0" instead, then follow all other
steps accordingly. Similarly, Outlook 2003 would be "11.0".
Hope that helps!

I am trouble attaching the zip file to the email, but not having trouble recieving
it. I can attach it by dragging the file over from Explorer, but I can't directly
attach it from Outlook, always try to open instead of insert.

Any suggestion?

I'm surprised that no one else knew about or suggested Mr. Slovak's Attachment Options
program, http://www.slovaktech.com/attachmentoptions.htm
I've been using this program for years now and don't know how I could work without
it. I even paid him for the program even though it is offered for free.

I am having a problem with EXE. files in OUTLOOK. In reading the replies that you've
gotten, I think I know the problem that you're having. I think you have OUTLOOK and
the answers are for OUTLOOK EXPRESS. The tabs that are mentioned are not in OUTLOOK.
I will continue to search for our answer.
