Sharing printer/files with win98 machines to a win xp pro machine

I have a winxp pro pc at a remote location. I can't access files or the printer using
win98 pc's. I've added logon's for all remote users to the xp pc. I can't access
files or the printer on the xp pc. I get the netlogin box to enter a password for
IPC$. When I enter the users password it comes back incorrect.
The winxp pro pc is connected to a domain as well as the other win98 pc's at the
remote location. Am I missing something about winxp. Should I set the xp box up as
a "workgroup" instead of connecting to my "domain"? Then set all win98 pc's at that
location to the xp workgroup? Will the pc's at the location be able to access servers
at different locations if I change their network settings?

This is not an answer, just some more information. I also have the same problem with
just two computers networked together. One Win98SE and one Win XP Pro, both have
the same Workgroup name. They are not part of a domain. The XP Pro computer has simple
file sharing enabled, two ethernet cards, one connected to a cable modem and one
connected to the Win98SE computer via a hub. The Win98SE computer cannot connect
to shared printers or folders on the XP computer without a password. All the user
accounts on the XP computer have blank passwords.

Well I had a similar problem(s) with a Win2k Prof. machine, connecting to Win95,
98 machines. This is basically the same, as far as settings go,etc..and how they
work.
FIRST, you have to WrITe down the NAME and the WORKGROUP ( U need them BOTH ) of
the PC that's running 95, 98, or ME,etc...(the one trying to connect to the XP BoX).
What you'll have to do is go to the machine running XP and right click on whatever
U WaNT to SharE, ( i.e. a FOLDER or a PRINTER, etc.... ) then you will need to go
to the "SHARING" tab. U will then see a bunch of various settings, and you should
be able to figure out what to do from there...( meaning just choose what GROUPS,
or USERS, COMPUTER nameS, etc...to add to be able to share the resources U wi$h theM
to SHaRe...etc...). Then, go back to the machines NOT running XP, (the ones U were
wanting to be able to connect to the XP box) and try to connect with whatever method
U wish, i.e. browsing for the resources, or trying just the path..etc....and this
ShouLD work for U likE it did for Me. GooD LuCK, LaTeR....

WindowsXP / Pro printer drivers will not work with Win98/98SE. What you need to
do is delete icon for the printer you have setup in the printer folder. Log into
the internet from "That" computer (the problem one) and download the printer drivers
for win98 for that printer and load them to that machine. From that same win98 machine,
add the printer now as a "network" printer. After this is added from that computer,
now go back to your mainstation (WinXP) computer and search for the printer by "groupname".
Then choose the printer it finds. There is never a "password" requirement to print
a document, even remotely. The only password you would enter would be when you first
log into your PC from a remote location. If you don't install just the win98 files
to only your win98 machine, then your winXP machine will use it's own winxp printer
files and try to share them with your 98se machine. If I'm not making any sense,
just slap me and tell me what is not understood. WinXP printer files should stay
on the xp machine and win98 printer files should stay on the win98 machine.
With WinXP Pro, I had the same trouble. I have a WinXP PC (MAIN) sharing with a
Win98SE PC. It shares the connection fine for roaming the internet and sharing files,
but wouldn't share the printer through the XP machine. Kept coming up with these
environment incompatiblity errors. When I tried to hit that icon that allows you
to choose a box that would allow you to share win98 machine drivers with XP, it would
ask for a disk or directory where the file are. This would always end up with an
encounter problem and would abort the installation. I was always ticked off at that
point, because..I had been on for hours by this time and was getting frustrated.
Go with the flow and tell me how this helped. Write me privately next time and
tell me if this did fix the problem. You must fix it locally, as it can't be fixed
remotely. Just remember, if it works locally, it will work remotely. Test it locally
first and Good Luck!

ok, i finaly dug it out. THIS is the end of your "IPC$" logon box (note: and that
one for printer, too).
i've spent months watching this STUPID logon box and today i decided to bring it
to an end. i made it :))) OHH IM SO HAPPY!!!
here's the deal:
the problem is in fact in the winXP's limitation on passwords.
1. first create an user on XP with the same username as the one on win98. if there's
a password too, assign it like on win98. in this case this should already solve the
problem. END. FIN.
2. but if you dont have a password and dont want to have the win98 user logging on
with a password, then do the following:
3. on XP go to
administrative tools -> local security policy -> security settings -> local policies
-> security options
and set "Account: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only"
to "Disabled"
you did it.

Simple answer:
Just turn OFF "Simple File Sharing". Uncheck that, and like magic everything just
starts working...
"Simple File Sharing" has to be the most lame/stupid thing to come out of Microsoft
in a long time...

ONE MORE THING:
You mention you had XP Home... You might not be able to fix this problem because
as far as I know, WinME and WinXP Home can ONLY use "Simple File Sharing" (no way
to turn it off). You can only turn it off in WinXP Pro...
Win98 and Win2K will not be able to connect to a WinME and/or WinXP Home machine
because 98/2k are incompatible with the evil "Simple File Sharing".

Since I have Xp Home, I am unable to stop simple file sharing. Is there any other
way?
