I have a question about Add
and Remove items from the "Send To" menu:
Does anyone know how to get rid of the "send to CD-ROM" or "send to FLOPPY" (I don't
have short cuts for those in any "send to" directory. Thanks!

Jesse, on my pc, I have two "send to" folders. The one you want is a hidden folder,
so first you have to make sure you are showing hidden files and folders. To do this,
open Windows Explorer>>>tools>>>folder options>>>view tab>>>then tick the box to
"show hidden files and folders"...........Now back to Windows Explorer>>>Documents
and Settings>>>Owner>>>"Send to". Hope what you're looking for is in there. I forgot
to mention that I'm using Windows Classic. When you're finished, go back and hide
the files and folders. Good luck.

I am having the same problem. I installed AOL AIM and now I have more sentTo items
on the context sensitive menu. I think it is internal to the program. I searched
the registry for a possible entry, but was unsuccessful. If you disable the drive
it disappears fomr the menu, but comes back if you re-enable that drive.

I know this post is old but I am lost. I have input several items in the "send to"
(sendto) but they do not show up when I right click and go to send to. In fact the
original items are still there even though I deleted all of them.
I did this in all user directories. This was a few days ago so I have rebooted,
etc.
any help would be appreciated. thank you!!

Send To folder doesn't work

I have the same problem. The Send To Folder doesn't work. Items in my Send To folder
do not appear on the Send To menu. And the Send To menu has items that are not in
the Send To folder. Yes, I've rebooted and yes, I'm using the correct folder.

OK, Start->Run->
sfc /scannow
To ensure the file is not damaged. Backup and delete the file C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\SendTo\desktop.ini.
Copy everything between the lines below, paste it in Notepad, save it as a .reg file,
and merge it.

Thanx much. I know just enough about Windows to get myself in a world of trouble,
so may I double-check these items with you to make sure I understand?
1. I ran sfc /scannow, and it is prompting me for an XP Pro CD-ROM because some OS
files "have been replaced by unrecognized versions". I have an XP(SP1a) Reinstallation
CD that came with my Dell computer, so I plan to use that. Does that mean I should
reinstall XP SP2, or can I rely on Windows Update to let me know what I need?
2. I changed my Tools>Folder options...> View to display system and hidden files,
and found the DESKTOP.INI Configuration Settings file. Since I will back this up
then delete it, I assume it will be recreated at some point. I was wondering if
this requires a restart, and how I will know if I want the old one back?
3. I opened regedit, and see a File>Import... menu. Is that what I use to merge
the new file?
I apologize if this is becoming burdersome, but I really do appreciate your help
in this battle to restore functionality. I'm on a mission!
I'll wait to hear back before I proceed. Thanx again, Wereotter.

- Use the CD you have. If that is rejected, you'll have to slipstream
SP2 and make a new CD. Automated tools for this: nLite,
AutoStreamer
- No restart required. Get SendTo working first, then I'll give you the info to
rebuild desktop.ini.
- Yes.

re: Send To folder doesn't work

I completed your suggestions.
I have these 5 files in my SendTo folder:
==========================================================
Desktop - a DESKLINK file that creates a shortcut.
Mail Recipient - a MAPIMAIL file that attaches a file to a new email.
Shortcut to Dummy1 Folder - to test SendTo.
Shortcut to Dummy2 Folder - to test SendTo.
Shortcut to Recycle Bin - a convenient way to delete files.
My SendTo menu displays the first four. It does not display the Recycle Bin shortcut,
but it does it add two more that are not in the SendTo folder:
===================
3 1/2 Floppy (A:)
DVD/CD-RW drive (E:)
So the bottom line is:
1. I can't add the Recycle Bin shortcut to the SentTo menu.
2. I can't delete the writeable drives from the SendTo menu.
In case it makes a difference, I didn't have these issues in NT 4.0.
I hope this is helpful. Thanx. Next?

I'm not sure I see why you want it when you already have the Delete command, but
you can make a shortcut to the Recycle Bin via this trickery:
- Create a new folder in an out-of-the-way place.
- Create a shortcut to this folder in the SendTo folder.
- Create in that folder the file desktop.ini, containing:
[.ShellClassInfo]
CLSID={645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
- Add the System attribute to that folder with the attrib command.

Thanx for your help. If I can't, I can't, but I'm a little puzzled by the dozens

Do I need to do anything with the leftover desktop.ini file?

Just seen this - rather late, but wondering if there wasn't a simpler solution to
all of this... were you aware that there are several instances of the SendTo folder?
Are you sure you were modifying the right one?
If you are a single user you are probably logged in as Administrator, in which case
that SendTo folder will apply. But there will also be a (separate) SendTo folder
under your own name. You would need to check / modify the contents of both of these.
It is also worth checking the SendTo folders under All Users and Default User.
All of these are under the Documents and Settings folder.

I was having a similiar problem on my XP system. There were only two items listed
on the SendTo context menu, and they didn't even match what I saw listed in the SendTo

I found a free utility that creates an icon in Control Panel that allows you to easily
add and remove SendTo items. Here's the link. Look for SendTo Toys:

It's pretty unbelievable how this 3 years old question hasn't been resolved yet :(
This send to DVD annoyance was a thorn in my side for far too long, so I guess I'll
just go on and disable send to completely. Hopefully this modification will do it:

Try deleting this from the registry:

Hi,
I realize this thread is rather old but is seems there is still an on-going issue.
It was frustrating me too to no end until I found a solution.
First you will need to download the Tweak UI tool from Microsoft. You can get it
here,
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Download the utility and install it. When you run the utility, click on the Templates
item on the left side. On the right side will be listed the additional items that
are listed on your Send To context menu. These items are ADDED to the Send To context
menu in additon to the items listed in your Send To folder in your Windows profile.
Even if you find these same values in the Registry (and yes, they are there) you
will be able to delete these values from the registry but Windows "self-heals" the
dam entries and puts them right back. So rather than continue to fight with the
Registry, I just used the Tweak UI tool. And the one good advantage of using Tweak
UI is that it allows you to select or unselect the item or delete it altogether.
So you can "remove" an item from the Send To menu or put it back easily by re-selecting
the item.
If you use the Tweak UI utility, you should be able to control what appears in your
Send To folder. It solved my problem and hopefully it will solve yours too.

Well, I uninstalled my old TweakUI and reinstalled the one from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
I clicked on Templates in the left side, and find only choices for New items on the
context menu. I can't find any Tweak item related to the Send To menu.
Don't know what I'm doing wrong.???

re: IT'S GONE, only useful method HERE

Bruce,
My apologies. I must have hit my head or suffered some other severe brain cramp.
My previous post with regards to the "Templates" in TweakUI is for the "New" context
menu and NOT the Send To context menu. Sorry.
So to help answer the Send To context menu problem....there are a couple of things
you can do.
If you have a drive letter you want to remove from ONLY the Send To context menu
and it's a CD/DVD burner, you can disable Windows recording properties for the drive.
Right click on the drive in question, click on the Recording tab. Uncheck the "Enable
CD recording on this drive". This will prevent you from dragging and dropping files
to the drive within Windows Explorer. But it will also remove the drive letter from
the Send To contect menu.
You could also "disable" a drive letter from TweakUI as well. In TweakUI, click
on My Computer\Drives...in the right pane will be all the drives. If you uncheck
a drive letter, the drive will be "disabled" and it will not appear in the Send To
context menu. BUT, it will also NOT appear in your Windows Explorer. So this is
a drastic method.
Rather than disabling the entire drive letter, you can also disable the Send To context
menu altogether, if you really want to. You can either navigate to the following
location in REGEDIT and delete the entry or you can copy the following line into
Notepad, save the file and double click on it. It will delete the entry for you.
Either way, the Send To context menu will be disabled by the following registry
entry.
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Send To]
@=""
The true method how the Send To context menu gets populated is a mystery and many
people have many different opinions. The one sure thing is that Windows itself builds
an initial list (which apparently we don't have control over) and then the user's
Send To folder contents are added to the list.
I apologize again for the confusion. Not to sure what I was thinking that night.
I hope this post will help you in some way.

re: Question about 'Add and Remove items from the ''Send To'' menu'

This will let you get rid of or add a CD Drive to the 'Send To' list (Works on my
computer anyway...). My 'Send To' didn't list a CD/DVD drive but I was able to fix
that and add one to the list. Here is how I did it, hope this helps, by the way
I have XP Pro. Before you start have a disk in the CD/DVD Drive. Go to Administrative
Tools, Computer Management. Then, on the left, click on the + to open the Storage
sub list, and then click Disk Management (A disk needs to be in the drive for it
to show up. I tried both blank and with data. Either worked for me.). In the right
side window find your CD/DVD Drive. Right Click on its name and choose Properties
from the list. In the Property Window click the Recording Tab and click in the Check
Box to activate 'Enable CD recording on this drive' (Uncheck this if you want to
remove drive from 'Send To' list). Below that you can configure a couple of options.
Apply and Close and thats it. Now when I right click I have the option to 'Send
To' my DVD Drive. For some reason the device manager doesn't list the same info
as this window does. So hopefully this will help, I have no idea what XP users should
do since this is for XP Pro, hopefully there is something similar for Drive Management.
