The transparencies of icon text background also disappear when applying *.gif and
*.png as desktop background.
Just let me know when you get the answer, this annoying me for a long time too.

Try the small app Invisible! 2001 by Mindbeat. It has a lot of other options on the
right click menu, also.

yeah i tried the mind beat, and microangelo, and the pysical setting in the system
properties dialog box, and NONE of it works!! and i REALLY hate icon backgrounds!!
any ideas?

This was screwing me up too. This is what 'fixed' it for me.
In Windows XP it also requires having Control Panel -> Display Properties -> Desktop-tab
-> Customize Desktop-button -> Web-tab -> "Lock desktop items" unchecked.
Control Panel -> System Properties -> Advanced-tab -> Settings-button in Performance-section
-> "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" checked.

That worked for me. Not sure why "Lock desktop items" suddenly was changed for me.
