Question about 'How do I reset...' : Playing AVI video files
Friday, January 3, 2003 at 4:53 am

I have a question about How do I reset the Windows Media Player video cache?:

I have Windows Media Player 8.00.. with Windows XP. I've downloaded a couple of AVI video files, and have problems playing them. When I play one, it says 'format not supported', though the file is complete, according to the file size. When I play another, it plays only sound, and does not play the video. (It's a video file.) I've checked for Windows updates, and get the message that I have the latest version of Windows Media Player. Could you help me out here? Thanks!

The above posting may well be right, but another possibility is that some AVIs are encoded using DivX codec. You'll need to download it (search the web for DivX, it's a fairly small, free download) then install it. It's fairly common to AVIs to need this. This should solve the problem of sound and no picture. As for Format Not Supported, this is often caused on an AVI by the download not completing in full. Unlike on an MPEG, the index table for an AVI is at the end of the file, so if you don't complete the download, it can't play any of it. With MPEGs it's at the beginning, so you can quickly start to preview a file while it's downloading. The solution is to get a small program (I forget the name, you can get it off Download.com, search for AVI editing tools or something) which strips the index table from AVIs and rebuilds it, enabling you to view the clip. It's not 100% perfect, but it usually works.

I'm experiencing similar difficulties.. it's showing me visualisations instead of the picture. But i have fiddled with the file in RAD video tools and i think the picture was lost on the encoding because other players jus have a white screen for the picture. However its file integrety was high on kazaa =D

There's 3 codecs commonly used. Divx was already mentioned. The other 2 are: Xvid and Ac3. Xvid and Ac3 can be found on Kazaa or other p2p program, I make sure to share them, Divx at divx.com.

It doesn't matter what version of Media Player you have. You need special codecs to play certain .avi files. One example of an .avi codec is DIVX. The DIVX codec for Windows Media PLayer can be downloaded from www.divx.com. Download the free version that inludes spyware, then run spybot or Ad-Aware to remove the spyware. The DIVX codec will still work after you remove the spyware. Another codec to look at is XVID. XVID is a free codec and is used my many .avi recorders. If you've already downloaded Media Player 9, that's OK, it has some cool improvements over version 8. Good Luck!
