Constantly Accessing Floppy Drive

I'm dealing with a few systems that have Windows XP Pro installed cleanly on them and on random boot-ups they constantly try to access the floppy drive once Windows gets to the desktop. All other applications and services are INCREDIBLY slow while this happens. The only thing to do is shut down. I've cleared all startup programs with MSCONFIG, but the problem still occurs. Any ideas?

you'll find all kind of suggestions on this...what i did was simply disable the floppy
in bios...never use it for anything anyway...only there for an emergency..this is
just what worked best for me..

one frequent cause of this is opening a file directly from a floppy (a very poor practice). This puts the file on the Recent Files list, so Explorer periodically "looks" for it. Check there, and remove any file references to the floppy. Sometimes people rather stupidly end up with a reference to a file on the A:\ drive in their startup folder.

Turns out I removed the FD and controller out of device manager and restarted, letting WinXP add them back and all seems well. Thanks for the tips, though!

Disabling the floppy drive in BIOS caused my system to hang continually. The problem was the recent list. I emptied that and all was well. I had also tried removing the floppy from device manager and letting it re-install but to no good effect. Thanks for the Recent list tip!
