I used to have the same problem, but it seems to have cleared up and I'm not sure
why - it might have been SP1, but I can't say for sure, because I stopped paying
much attention (harping on things I can't fix makes me irritable...). Now it seems
to be OK and the status bar shows whether I double-click a folder or choose "Explore".
The only time it doesn't show is when I look in a graphics/multimedia folder with
the special options.
Good Luck

Ya its actually fixed itself now. I've installed sp1 too recently, but im not sure
if that fixed it. What i did do was click on apply view to all folders ( in tools
and folder options) and it seemed to work from then on.Darn XP annoyances, it really
is annoyin when I can't fix them!

When you open Windows Explorer, the Status bar may be absent even if you previously
checked View | Status Bar in the menu. To make Windows remember that setting, first
close all Windows Explorer windows and launch just one. Size it the way you want
and put a check next to Status Bar in the View menu. Now close the window by holding
down the Shift key while clicking on the X icon at top right. This also works in
Internet Explorer.
