Scanner driver disappears after installing in XP HE
Monday, January 13, 2003 at 7:54 pm Posted by Niistoo
(2 messages posted)
I have a Dexxa 4800 scanner and am running XP Home Edition. After running the install
software I reboot, yet there is no recognition of the scanner at startup or at any
time afterward. Error messages are absent. Device Manager does not indicate any
problems and does not show the scanner at all. Wiring configuration is [PrinterPort
to Scanner to Printer]. BIOS parameters for LPT1 are set to "Auto". I tried setting
LPT1 to "ECP/EPP" without success before returning it to the "Auto" setting. I've
tried using the "Add/Remove Hardware" wizard in Control Panel, but it does not detect
the scanner. The scanner was working fine until one day XP just decided to "forget"
the scanner. Any suggestions?..

Wiring configuration is [PrinterPort to Scanner to
Printer] ??
wasn't aware you could do that without a switch ...
but if you say so..could and most probally is a bad cable if your printer is working
and the scanner isn't
try changing the cables and see what that does..

You may have done this already; disconnect the printer and start your computer. That
should force it to find the scanner. If so connect the printer up again, or go to
a switching device. Have you checked to be sure all your cables are standard for
bidirectional communication. Old printer cables were a different standard.

First, have you verified with the scanner manufacturer that this model is supposed
to work with XP? Not all hardware is usable under XP.
Next, I have had bad luck trying to put more than one device on a parallel port,
without a switch box. Yes, I have seen hardware that "claims" to let you "pass through",
but these are not always reliable. Try connecting only the scanner to the parallel
port and see if that helps.

I don't know if this will work with your machine, but give this a shot. I just got
my IBM Scanner to work after a year of futzing around and searching the world and
using expertise. Found a file called rscan95106.exe for a different scanner and
gave it a shot. Of course, it didn't work. However, in the readme.txt file, there
was a little one line blurb that said, "set the BIOS for the LPT port you are using
to EPP only mode." Aaaaaaargh! Mine had been set to EPP & ECP mode option. Changed
it to EPP only and the thing magically started working. Try setting your LPT port
to EPP only and see if that helps...

i have what looks like exactly the same problem. my old epson gt-8500 won't work,
and in fact, the puter won't even recognise the BiD parallel port that i put in for
the scanner. if i look under the printer...preferences...port options, i can see
"BiD parallel port" listed, but i can't figure out how to use it for my scanner.
Argh!

Making Acer Parallel port scanners work in Windows XP
Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 12:52 pm Posted by Dale Wright
(1 messages posted)
Instructions for installing Acer parallel port scanners in Windows XP: (might also
work for other brands)
For this driver to work in XP you must install the MiraScan software then install
the scanner manually.
Step 1. Download MiraScan v3.424 from the web : Mirascan_v3424p.exe
Step 2. Unzip and install the Mira Scan driver that you just downloaded. After installation
, system will suggest you to add a scanner
Step 3. Then, add an imaging device
Step 4. Then the Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard comes up. Click Next at the
bottom.
Step 5. Then on Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard screen it will ask you which
scanner or camera do you want to install? You want to go where it says "Manufacturer"
and then click on EPPSCANNER and where it says "Model" it should say color flatbedscanner.
Make sure it is highlighted, also. Click on Next at the bottom.

I too had problems with XP after a few weeks my PRINTER was "unable to find the

I reset my printer port to spp,ecp etc as all resources said(Epson,Microsoft, the
web) but no joy.
Once I had changed (in bios) to EPP ONLY......
HEY PRESTO!!! "your new hardware is installed and ready to use"

An excellent contribution. This has worked for my Vuego 320P. Anyone else using
this information, reboot after installing the driver as instructed by Dale.
Well done!

I have an Acer parallel port scanner and followed the instructions in the info sheet
with Mirascan, to install the EPPSCSNNER driver off the XP list. I received a warning
message back telling me this driver is "NOT DIGITALLY SIGNED" and could make my computer
unstable. Acer instructions tells me to "continue" and ignor the warning. My computer
is now unstable and reboots when I try to use the scanner. Why would Microsoft include
an uncertified EPPSCANNER driver in the XP package. I have installed all the updates
to XP including SP-1 & SP-2. I wonder if I just have an old EPPSCANNER driver in
my XP?

I just got my Dexxa 4800 running on XP Pro.
1) Install the Artec AS6E drivers. It's the same hardware, just a different brand.
http://www.artecusa.com/parallel-scanner-driver.html
1.a) If the installer doesn't work, you might have to extract the files to a floppy
disk and install from there. If that doesn't work either, then you have to jump through
some hoops, for which you'll need some basic familiarity around your computer (I'm
not going into gritty details--get someone to help if you don't understand). Extract
the files to a temporary folder. Run "cmd" and go to the DRIVER folder. Type:
expand AS6EIO.SY_ C:\windows\system32\drivers\AS6EIO.SYS
mkdir C:\windows\twain_32
mkdir C:\windows\twain_32\AS6E
expand AS3E32.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\AS6E\AS3E32.DLL
expand AS6E32.DS_ C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\AS6E\AS6E32.DS
expand AS6E32.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\AS6E\AS6E32.EXE
copy ..\help\as6e32.chm C:\windows\twain_32\as6e\as6e32.hlp
expand as6e32.in_ C:\windows\as6e32.ini
expand supmini.in_ C:\windows\supmini.ini
2) Go to C:\windows\twain_32\as6e
3) Right click as6e32.exe, go to the Compatibility tab, and enable "Windows 95" compatibility.
4) Make sure that your BIOS has your parallel port set to "EPP". (The program suggests
"Normal" or "EPP", but I found normal didn't work.)
5) Run as6e32.exe, and your scanner should be happy and working.
