Question about 'Do I still need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT?'

I have a question about Do I still need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT?:

My toddler turned my computer off and then back on while I was out of the room. Now when I try to boot up I am getting a message saying that my confi.sys file is missing or has been corrupted. Based on what I have read in this forum that file is not needed. I cannot get any further in the boot up process than this screen. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening or how I can fix it? Windows XP came on my computer therefore I do not have the cd to boot from. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank You!

Normally, you don't need the config.sys and autoexec.bat - they are sometimes put in there for older, DOS-based apps (usually put on for some of the "junk" apps that come with a proprietary (Gateway, Dell, Compaq, etc.) computer. Normally, XP uses System.ini, Win.ini, Boot.ini to take care of necessities, and will use msdos.sys to take care of other items. You might consider booting from a floppy and checking for an autoexec.bat file and if it exists, open it and see if it refers to a config.sys or other items. If so, try to comment out the lines that seem to call for "helpers". Good Luck

Thank you for your help. Please forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand what you mean. Do you mean boot of another type of software or win XP. I have and MS money cd I could boot off of. However, it won't let me get to anything. Do you think I should just try to call some kind of support?

Almost certainly that isn't "config.sys" but "config system" It refers to C:\Windows\System32\Config\System

It's a hive, it contains the LOCAL MACHINE data in the registry. One of the most
important files on your computer.

Your best bet is to try a repair/reinstall using your XP CD. Boot from your XP CD,
choose Setup, then choose Repair This should (repeat, should) reinstall your OS
without affecting your data.

You should have gotten a restore disk or something when you got your computer. Is it still under warrantee? If you don't have an XP disk of some type, ask the vendor or manufacturer for one. If that doesn't work, demand....with a cc to your State Attorney General Consumer Affairs Office.

Usually many docs. are backedup. Search for it and replace the active one. Remember to rename it with out the last ext. (backup or so) Also check the date and kbs. I fix them usually this way. Spread the knowledge and enjoy a pc out of troubles. Enreyes52
