Useless system processes

At any given time, I can open up task manager (I'm using XP) and find at least 25 processes running. Looking right now, there are 30 processes.. I can only identify the reason for 9 of them. The main energy wasters are spoolsv.exe (~38,000K) and svchost.exe (there are usually 5 different files totaling up to ~18,000K of memory use). There a bunch of other ones that take up between 20k and 1,800k of memory: sPDTMONX.exe, SPEMAI~1.EXE, atiptaxx.exe, sPdevmonx.exe, SPDEVMONSRV.exe, rundll32.exe, lsass.exe, services.exe, winlogon.exe, wcmdmgr.exe csrss.exe, smss.exe, sPpdpsrv.exe. I have a feeling that many of these are running needlessly. Does someone here know if any of these are in fact wasting space and how I can keep them from running? Thanks in advance.

Definitely follow up on the link in the other reply to your post...you may also be
interested in this one.

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

A number of the names you listed are ordinary windows programs:

-spoolsrv is pretty necessary if you have a printer, but it should normally be taking
up only a tenth of the memory you state...

-the following are absolutely necessary, don't try to mess with them:
winlogon, csrss, smss

-these three will all stay, though adjusting services should reduce their memory
load: scvhost, services, lsass

-I'm not sure why you have an instance of rundll32, but its a core windows file.
It could be anything from completely valid to a virus.

The rest are not part of Windows, and are probably not necessary. Search your computer
for them and try and find out what they are. Also search the internet to try and
find out what they are. All sorts of things (ISPs and printers and scanners) install
unecessary background programs that are usually a complete waste.

-I don't know what these are, they seem to be a group:
sPDTMONX.exe, SPEMAI~1.EXE, sPdevmonx.exe, SPDEVMONSRV.exe, sPpdpsrv.exe
If they are not your anti-virus software, or required for some hardware you have...you
probably don't need them running. I tried searching for a couple in Google, and
got no results, which makes me pretty suspicious.

These names seem quite suspicious to me:
wcmdmgr.exe, atiptaxx,

Hi, I get an error when I boot my system up that tries to use atrpuixx.enu and says it is not a recognizable application. It seems to be linked to atiptaxx.exe how do I fix this? Thanks Yusuf

The files you mention such as spdtmonx and SPEMAI~1.EXE and SpDTMONX.EXE are all from a sharp printer driver and software installaiton. Most likely for the Sharp model AJ5030 combination printer, scanner, fax and copier machine. You will need these files to run the machine. Uninstall the sharp software if you no longer use it. Hope this helps

atiptaxx.exe is something to do with ATI graphics cards: atiptaxx.exe ATI Video card additional utility. Often used a lot of processor resources. Not required. was pulled from here -http://www.greatis.com/regrun3useless.htm you might also find your other listed apps here too.

THAT SITE IS A PILE OF SHIT, DOESN'T EVEN LIST THE PROCESS IN QUESTION. IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOMETHING USEFUL TO CONTRIBUTE DON'T POST A LINK TO A WORTHLESS SITE.

I found SPPDPSRV.exe on my computer and looked at it with a text editor. It appears to be a Sharp printer driver.
