isass.exe system error

Can anyone help with this error. In the error box is written, "THE END POINT FORMAT IS INVALID". This happened after I disabled a drive that I have not been using for a while. (I loaded XP on two partitions, on a new drive. I've been using them, no problem, for a month. Then I thought I would disable my old drive to prepare for removing it completely. Now the first partition shows this error but the secound does not.) thanks for any suggestions

I assume that's lsass (with an L) not isass. (Frequent mistake...if it is indeed
isass, that's not an XP program and you should just stop it from running.)

Anyway...not clear whether this is more than just an annoyance for you, but if you're
just trying to get the error message to go away...

There are several services that run under lsass and you can probably disable them.
A couple have to do with "protected storage" and other MS BS.

Go to, http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm, and search the page for lsass,
click the links to read more about those services.

To access your services: Start Menu > Run > type: services.msc

Thanks J. but I guess I should have said that this error shows up in the middle of loading windows and then after I click "okay" it locks up. I can't get into that partition's device manager to re-enable the drive I shut down and I can't use services.msc to shut those services down because it will only work for the drive (or partition in this case) I've booted from. (and , of course, I can't boot up on the problem partition) Hmmmm. . . how's that for a conundrum?

Has anyone found a fix for this LSASS.exe error? I can boot safe mode, but have not been able to put a finger on what causes the error. I have even tried system restores and I am about to be forced to reload XP.

I had windows repair the operating system. It looked as if it was reloading the whole thing but it did not and, much to my amazement, all my settings, desktop, preferences were unaffected. You probably know this but just start up with the XP cd in the drive and follow the prompts for "repair". Good luck.

XP repair made it work again, but did not install all of the drivers. After I installed the video driver for my GeForce 4 Ti4600, the problem returned. I have the cause narrowed down to either the driver, I have tried two, or the video refresh change I make so that games will run at higher FPS. I can disable the driver in safe mode and the system boots fine. Does anyone else with this problem have a GeForce video card? FYI LSASS = Local Security Authority Sub-System

I to have the error message, Except mine says it's an Input/Output error which it was unable to recover it. Unable to ReadIn, ReadOut, Or Flush Out The Registry Key. I have a Gateway 700s system 512Ram Geforce 4 Ti4200 video card running under Windows XP Home. At this point i'm still unable to boot up windows. I'm still searching for a fix when I came across this post. I have tried to restore the registry to the last known config to no avail. If you or anyone knows of a fix please let me know. It took a long time to get the pc the way I wanted it and I don't want to reinstall XP at this time if i can help it. Thanks for Any Info.

One of the "fixes" I found was to boot in safe mode and remove the video drive. Then boot normal which should bring XP up in VGA mode. At that point I installed the newest driver I could get. In my case I had the latest from the card maker and the latest from NVidia. They were slightly different versions. Niether seemed to fix the problem completly, just for a few boots. I also disabled every service I did not want and unistalled everything I did not use. I did this very aggresivily and had to re-add some things. At some point I seem to have fixed the problem, but I think it will return. Good luck.

I encountered a problem with lsass.exe while 'personalizing' my system. Lsass.exe took up 85+% of the CPU. Althought the symptom was different the cause may be the same: your security settings are not compatible with the active-x settings. Reboot in Safe mode, reset the 'security' to medium and/or use MMC security add-in and import the default INF file from the /windows/security/templates/. Also, remove any utilities that may reset the 'security' level at startup. Good luck

john, i am working for a technical support and i do have this error coming up. though in my case it was a cable modem issue. a repair was done and that completely resolved the problem. i do suggest u try the same and do remember that during repair, only the monitor, k.b, mouse and speakers should be connected. best of luck shaji.

Let me throw a little light on this subject: First of all it is not ISASS but LSASS, which stands for Local Security Authority SubSystem (something like that) and has actually something to do with RPC. So I haven´t really found a solution for this but hopefully with this new information somebody will. BTW personally I thought this to be a virus, but neither Symantec or Mcafee seem to mention it anywhere.... Hope this helps! Lee

I would just like to make a statement about your post. I about 3 months ago did do this as you had suggested (To access your services: Start Menu > Run > type: services.msc ) and found messenger service right clicked on it went to properties and clicked disable then stop and then ok. Have not had a gray pop up at all You know the kind you can not copy and past from I was online the other day and my fire wall popped up a box and told me that 1sass.exe was trying to send out I told it no and continued to run operated just fine.

CAUSE This issue can occur if the path to the NTDS folder that holds the Active Directory database files and log files does not exist or the NTFS permissions on this folder and database files are too restrictive, and Active Directory cannot start. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue: Start your computer in Directory Services Repair mode. At a command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each: ntdsutil files info The output should look similar to: Drive Information: C:\ NTFS (Fixed Drive ) free(2.9 Gb) total(3.9 Gb) D:\ NTFS (Fixed Drive ) free(3.6 Gb) total(3.9 Gb) DS Path Information: Database : C:\WINNT\NTDS\ntds.dit - 10.1 Mb Backup dir : C:\WINNT\NTDS\dsadata.bak Working dir: C:\WINNT\NTDS Log dir : C:\WINNT\NTDS - 30.0 Mb total res2.log - 10.0 Mb res1.log - 10.0 Mb edb.log - 10.0 Mb Verify that each of the paths and files that are listed above exist. Check each of the paths and files that are listed above to ensure that the permissions are at least set to the defaults (administrators and system - full control). NOTE: You can use the Cacls.exe command-line utility to change the permissions of a folder.

You have a big problem as well. It's between your ears. I'd say your eyes too. If you looked you might see that I posted that more than a year ago. By the time you've "helped me" (sarcastically) I could have taken a course on this problem. It's fixed, and I didn't resort to that "last configuration" bail out either. Thanks for the help. :o)

Just to give my two-cents. I've been researching this today and found information on a virus named "isass.exe", which is often confused for a legitimate file named "Lsass.exe". Oddly enough, however, I didn't find any info on McAfee about the FILE "isass.exe", but I found a page at http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/isass/ This indicates it's part of the Optix Pro trojan. When I looked that up at McAfee I did find information about the trojan, but it still never specifically referred to "isass.exe". Basically, I did a search of my system for both "isass" and "Lsass". I only found the legitimate file, "Lsass"...so I'm guessing I'm alright. I just wanted to clarify that both actually do exist and there's a difference between them.

I too, have been researching this problem and found the following...There is definitely a FILE named Isass.exe and a "legitimate" file name Lsass.exe. I was working on a friend's computer that was having major problems of rebooting after displaying a security threat message with the path to the file ...Isass.exe. From what i've read from other sources there seems to be some consistency that this file is a backdoor trojan. http://www.resellerratings.com/forum/t40895.html http://search.symantec.com/custom/us/query.html There are some good suggestions on both these sites to try and rid yourself of this "problem". I tried formatting the harddrive and re-installing windows XP only to have the same problem re-occur. Here are some suggestions... - Search "Task Manager" under the "Process" tab for the file name "Isass.exe" - Search your PC for the file "Isass.exe. If found, restart your PC in Safe Mode, remove the file name and reboot. Then edit the registry and search for any entry containing the name "Isass.exe" and remove it. - Scan your PC for any viruses. - Download the latest "windows updates"/Service Packs. - Install a firewall...i.e Zone Alarm Hopefully one of these suggestions will help...

I reloaded software several times and didn;t work. i did not formated , I am trying to exaust other solutions. I am afraid taht even if i reformat the virus may come back since it was on the network Thanls Jose

the error is cause by some incompatibility of winXP and all other ntfs system, this error happens if your using a motherboard that uses a processor lower than P4, means, youre using socket 370 or lower, this error had never been known with P4 and AMD motherboards, NOTE: another thing, the error is also only present when youre using a dial_up internet connection. If youre using an old (socket 370 and below) motherboard, change to dsl or cable connection and you will do just fine with old models. but if you cant afford, go back to win98 2nd edition, or if you really want XP, fine. when you install xp, format your os to use fat32, not ntfs
