'Rename the Recycle Bin'
Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 10:16 am Posted by Adrian Kentleton
(3 messages posted)
I have a comment about Rename
the Recycle Bin:
(1) There's no option to change the bin's name via the 'Properties' menu item in
my version of XP Pro.
(2) Changing the 'Attributes' to 50 01 00 20 via Regedit (see XP Annoy book p112)
doesn't generate 'Rename' option either.
Help!

This tweak no longer appears to work. I manually edited the registry key, then compared
the .reg file below to one for this key from my registry. They are identical. Still,
no rename option in the right-click menu, or the properties.
I have a brand new machine with a brand new & up-to-date copy of XP Pro. This may
be a very recent "feature". I'd still be interested in being able to rename it.

Try this method, it worked for me (I am using Windows XP Pro without Service Pack
1): Create a new text document on the desktop then copy and paste the text below
into it, then rename the .txt to .reg and double click the file -

Matt - worked a treat -Thanks
...... for any other thickO's (like me) ... Heres a little more info.....
.... copy the text starting just before "Regedit4" to the end of "call for atributes...0000..."
..... past it into a blank document created by "notepad" ....(I removed those text
arrows that sometimes appear on the left when you cut and paste).......
save on the desktop ..... I saved mine as ... "bin" ..... then doubble clicked and
re-opened it and "saved as" and typed "bin.reg" in the file name box......Save.
This produces another "Registration Entries" type file on the desktop also called
"bin" .... its like a Text file with a bunch of little blue boxes on it...
Doubble click this and a message appears to confirm the registry has been updated......
OK....
I then pressed F2 as instructed and thought it had failed ..... nothing changed.....its
only when you right click on the "Rubbish Bin" that it becomes apparent that there
is now an option to "Rename"...... Rename .... and ...Enter..!
Great work Matt ..... can there be any side effects?

I'm running Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 and this is what I found.
In the registry, where the directions say to change the "(Default)" key to the name
you want, I found this didn't work. But something they could have changed in SP2
-- There is a value labeled "LocalizedString" that has something like "@%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,-8964"
in it -- that is the recycle bin's name right there - it gets the name from Shell32.dll.
Don't go modifying the Shell32.dll file -- I have found that simply changing it to
whatever name you want (eg. Scrap Can or whatever you want) without quotes and go
back to desktop, press F5 to refresh, and it should change.
However I do suggest that you rename the "LocalizedString" to "LocalizedString_old"
or something and just make a new "LocalizedString" as a String Value in case something
goes wrong/doesn't work and you need the old value back.

Actually, you don't need to make a new LocalizedString value. Just rename the old
one so that Windows won't see it, and use "(Default)" to set the name.

I tried all the suggestions in the thread here and it didn't work. So, I opened 'Regedit'
and searched for the string which my Recycle Bin had got renamed to.
I found it in this location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
The 'Default' had to be renamed in the right pane to 'Recycle Bin'.

(XP) Nice one; best hack I've seen for this. I'm running 'home', and alot of hacks
seem built for pro, so they could never be done. This cuts to the chase, and works.
