After uninstalling windows xp and returning to win 98, a win xp setup screen is shown at bootup, right after it checks the memory. I can cancel the setup and continue normally but this shows every time I start the computer. How do I get rid of this?

try this, use a startup disk, boot into dos, type sys a: c: This should overwrite the bootloader program to use dos files only (for win9x) instead of using the ntldr. It also depends on how you got rid of xp and went to 98. Just try what i said, and if it didn't work, i'll help you more. If it did work, i'd like to know also. I hope it works for you, good luck.

Simple : I think you windows xp installation cd still in the CPU. Remove it and it will start normally. So basically you must remove the cd after the second boot or after the copying activities end. This is what happened to me back then and at last I have configured it by myself by actually take out the cd. Hopes this helps.
