Question about 'Top reasons for random, fatal crashes in Windows XP and Windows 2000'

I'll warn you, this post is long. If you reply please read it all first. If not, you may find I already covered or explained what you suggest. For some reason, I have catastrophic failures under Windows XP. These problems include (for the first time last install) the installer crashing five times, random unexplained crashes (such as a crash moving the mouse, clicking, or just sitting there), quirks (like windows forgetting their settings or the wrong language being displayed), and network problems (like joining a domain, you can't actually log in). To further explain my network problems, I'll start by saying that this last install was the first time this type of problem occurred (Windows XP always seems to muster up something new each time). I joined the domain and restarted. Now normally, you can select the domain and login, but when I clicked on the domain selection box it brought up a "Building Domain List" box for about 10 seconds. Then I clicked on the domain and it displayed that window and crashed the first time. I restarted and had the same sequence of events except for that when I clicked on the domain, it only lasted about 2-3 minutes instead of crashing. When I put in my username and password and tried to log into the domain, it loaded a couple seconds and then restarted automatically. It did this a few times until it decided to work for some unknown reason and didn't even display those dialogs for domain selection--it just ran correctly with my computer and the domain listed. I've tried Windows XP about five times now, each one ending in disaster, some different way. Take note that there's been major hardware changes between each install. It was mediocre under my two 256MB Crucial ECC PC2100 DDR dimms, but is now horrible under my two 512MB Samsung PC2700 DDR dimms. I know you're probably thinking RAM, but listen to what I say first: When it comes to Windows 2000 Pro, I have absolutely NONE of these problems and have stayed up for a month without failure (had to restart to install some junk). On average, Win2k does not crash due to failure--just when I install drivers, etc. does it ever restart. What could there be that would make Windows XP hate my machine so damn much when Windows 2000 Pro has absolutely no trouble? I have no idea. Perhaps one of you has had the same experience.

I assume you have a dual boot with 2000 Pro
Try running the upgrade adviser from 2000 it may find the problem
Good luck, Adam Bradley

I have solved similar problems on several computers (Compaq notebooks and desktops) going to Windows Update and installing Service Pack 1 BEFORE joining the NT domain (we have DHCP here and the machines get an address and are able to reach the Internet before the network is completely configured - I mean with no domain/password)
