Banners Suck!!!!!

Ok, Ive tried everything, ive scanned for viruses using norton, ive scaned for spyware using adaware, ive removed any software that could possible contain any of that mess, ive cleaned out my registry and ive searched for banners or ads on my harddrive. So does anyone have an explanation for why banners ad themselves at the top of all my websites, including sites that dont even use banners. And i cant close IE until the banner has been added. Somebody please tell me what this is and how to stop it...... :((

What do you mean by "add themselves to the top of all my websites"? The rant may make you feel better, but we need some cool-headed, objective descriptions of the actual problem.

which version of Adaware? There was a new release a couple of weeks ago, the older version had become very ineffective. You should also consider using SpyBot Search and Destroy.

I mean they add themselves at the very top of websites, like for instance, when i open up this website. There are no ad banners at the top....but for some reason, one is being added to the top of the site, and its not until after that banner has been added that i can close the browser. Otherwise it just dings when i click the x. Its kinda like a pop up...and it pops in instead...get it...or is this still confusing?....this happens to every site i go to....including my own and i know for a fact i dont have any banners on my website.....can you help?

But you still didn't run SpyBot??? General concensus seems that it is better, but probably not enough experience with AdAware 6 to be sure.

Brook, I know you said you have already tried cleaning out the registry, but try it using jv16 power tools' registry tool. It is much more user-friendly than regedit (which I am assuming, incorrectly perhaps, that you have been using). Additionaly, if you do delete something from your registry with power tools and then find that something is no longer working, there is a backup/restore function that you do not have in regedit. Good luck....I know you will let us know!! Brad

Wow! This one is really persistent. Can you give some details about the banner? Is it random ads, or just advertising one site? Do you get the same banner on all web pages? I'm not sure what else to ask, but any more information might provide a clue. How long has this been going on?

Its been goin on for like....5 or 6 days now...and im about to go crazy myself...Its always a different ad, not for a certain site, just like a pop up...on it appears at the top of the sites..and i cant close the browser out until it has appeared...and if by some chance....it doesnt show up one time....i have to hit ctrl alt delete and hit end process on iexplorer. it causes the process to take up 100% cpu usage too..and i dont have a clue what ive done or not done to cause it... :((

It sounds to me like you might be on the right track. I'm not at an XP machine at
the moment, so I can't check any of this, but why don't you list the file sizes of
iexplorer.exe and all of the dll's in the IE folder. Maybe one of them was replaced
for you?? Maybe someone with an XP machine can compare theirs with what you post.
Of course if the culprit is really good, then that may not reveal anything.

Or you could try to re-install IE, here's one source of info on that:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm
I can't vouch for it being any good - came up on a google search.

Nothing wrong with a bit of humor with a fix , right :-)) glad you could laugh about
it after the mess you had there. Seriously though you have a malicious BHO (Browser
Helper Object) on your machine somewhere. Spybot will usually catch these but it
may be new or relatively unknown. This is a good place to start looking for a remover.
Case

earlier you said "ok i know im probably getting on everyones nerves with this..."
My feeling is quite to the contrary. The extensive dialog is the best way to solve
any problem. I may not have come up with the solution, but because you kept the dialog
flowing, it eventually led to Casey figuring out the right sanswer. Far too many
post a problem once, never to say anything back. Maybe their problem was fixed, maybe
not, but I think in most cases it's not. Had you posted once and waited, you would
likely still be waiting - without an answer.

Really the reason for posting this afterthought is hoping that other people will
see how well this worked.

Hi rr, I think it is a 6 thing (maybe 5.5 not sure) anyway they decided to rewrtite the way "plug ins"(now BHO's) work with the browser , in cases like Flash or the Google toolbar it's great , virtually seamless and they don't install garbageware. Unfortunately like so much stuff MS writes it is easily exploited. And I completely agree with you about the ongoing dialog , the more dialog the better we understand the full problem, as we understand more we can make better suggestions. As far as this problem , a week or 2 from now after they update Spybot or Adaware will probably catch it ,so the suggestions were right on the money. It acted like a BHO , so I just figured turn it off manually and see what happens. Case
