Task Manager closes when opened

I was trying to end a program by using ctrl+alt+del and my task manager came up and closed the next second without me being able to do anything. I tried it again but it did the same thing and its been a month since this has been happening. How can i fix my task manager and make it stay open like it used to? Thank you all in advance.

Can you spell virus? If you don't have a good program (which is also up to date) get one ASAP. Also look into items like Spybot to get rid of the "Heists" that some unscrupulous "advertisers" perform on your system.

All i know is that it is a virus that affects the windows regisrty and you have to go into the regisrty and delete some line but i'm not sure which line to delete.

I also have the same problem. If it is a program, then we both must have it? Do you have Kazaa? I think that that may be the problem.

I just got this problem and fixed it. There is a screen saver program I downloade from a news group and click on by accident. It put a file in (windows 2000) winnt\system32 called wincfg.scr.. you will also see it in you screen saver list. I did not have this file as my screen saver. I changed the extention on the file since it is in use and will not delete, reboot and task mgr work again.. good luck and be carrfull what you click

I have the same problem. I also used Kazaa (Lite) and the problem surfaced after I downloaded a file. I double clicked it, it disappeared, and then the system was extremely slow and I could not open the task manager (it closes when it opens.) I am running windows XP.

I just solved it after reading a couple of similar messages on forums. In my case the offensive program was called explorer64.exe (in c:\winnt\system32), and there were entry in registry; if you can't open registry in normal mode, reload in safe mode, then run regedit and search for Run -- in find window, uncheck values and data, leave keys checked and check 'Match whole string'; then look through all keys with Run and Run Once, you'll probably find something suspicious; in particular, an entry pointing to a program without path means that the program is inside winnt\system32; after I got rid of registry entreis for explorer64 and took it out of c:\winnt\system32, the problem was solved.

I did the same thing Doug did. I'm running Windows XP Home, and the offendign .scr file was named nbrute.scr. I couldn't delete it, so I just renamed the extension, rebooted, and all's well for now.

I'm currently debugging a friend's computer, and I found a file that was running at startup that would semi-instantly close Task Manager, msconfig, and regedit when they were opened. I finally got lucky and ended the task before it could close the Task Manager window (I did it while windows XP was just opening up). The file was called jimglpmaze.exe, in the windows\system32... I searched for information on it on Google, but no results... Has anyone heard of this file, and what exectly does it do (apart from close diagnostic windows, of course)?

Just found something similar on a customer's PC. Boot to DOS and look in Windows\System folder for NBRUTE.SCR - it may have the 'hidden' attribute set so DIR with a /a switch. Delete it. Boot in SAFE mode to get access to Regedit and go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run - you may see another Winsock2 driver there that connects to nbrute.scr. Delete the entry and check the other Run entries as well for similar. This type of virus or trojan can reinstall itself but it should be safe if you delete nbrute.scr. Sophos AntiVirus don't know of this yet so I've emailed it to them. Sound like a new version of the 'Spybot' trojan. Run a firewall - Agnitum Outpost is free and very good. Hope this helps. Mike

I was having the same problem with task manager plus a few other programs, but I checked out task manager while I had it opened one time and there was a strange process running about 50% of my CPU called winkib.exe. When I ended that process, task manager quit closing on me and I quit lagging so much :P

LISTEN UP, I had the same problem as all of you. I haven't used task manager for the last 6 months because it would disappear right when i opened it. I believe it is due to a virus and simply by completely renaming all of your task manager files it will work. THANK YOU guys all for posting these things and helping get my task manager working again!!!!

I too have this problem. The best thing I did so far was to copy "taskmgr.exe" and rename it to "taskmgr.com" as someone has already posted. This allowed me to open task manager and locate the files giving me problems. My files were varied but the original was tool.exe which I initally thought was part of Nero. I also had other files that were giving me problems and I assume they are from the same virus. These seem to be called a legitimate file followed by a few random letters such as ATIebg.exe and MSGSexx.exe. My infection came, I think, when I was plugged directly into my cable modem and I was not using my firewall.

Following the advice of one of the posts above, I renamed taskmgr to taskmgr.com and found that a deal called WUAUMGR.exe had been the trouble maker. The only problem is that I don't know where it is in the regedit or how to stop it from restarting with startup (it re-enables itself even though I disable it in msconfig). Any suggestions would be apprecciated. Thanks Eric

Eric, I ran an online antivirus scan from RAV Antivirus (www.ravantivirus.com). This showed me all of the viruses I had but did not clean anything. After it found all of the viruses, I copied all of the exe names (for example WUAUMGR.exe) it had found to notepad. From there I went to regedit and did a "find" for all of the exe's on my list and deleted every instance of them from the registry. I then did a normal Windows search and deleted every instance of them on the computer. I then rebooted to a well working computer. This was time consuming but it removed the viruses. I re-ran the RAV online scan to make sure I was clean. It found the same viruses in the "System Restore" (WinXP), so I turned it off which resets and deletes the restore information. Hope this helps... Don

THE SOLUTION THAT I FOUND: In my WINDOWS folder, I found a file called WINSOCK32.EXE. This should not exist; winsock32.dll is a system file, but winsock32.exe is a virus.

I also had the same problem, the offending file was located at C:/windows/system 32/TASKMAR.EXE. It was a hidden file about 19 KB. I found it using Sysinternals Process explorer. You Can Find this program at WWW.sysinternals.com. I believe it is freeware or requires a donation or something. I also found a series of files (again in system 32 folder) they were 24KB large and were a series of eight or nine random letters followed by .exe (xxxxxxxx.exe) i believe these to be some sort of trojan horse files. Try using the RAV intivirus websites online virus scan it is very effective and very thurough. good luck!

I just found MSDenoU.exe in the windows\system32 folder. Once I deleted it, I was able to open task manager and regedit with no problem. Afterwards, I searched through the reg and found about 3 or 4 references to it. It was not picked up by Norton, Ad-Aware, Panda Search, or Pest Patrol.

Perform the following:

  1. Disable System Restore
  2. Perform an online virus scan.
  3. Download, update, and run these tools: Repeat as necessary until clean.
  4. If you still experience problems after doing these steps, download HijackThis and post a log to this forum.
  5. To protect against reinfection, download and use these:
  6. Optionally Reenable System Restore
