Question about 'How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

[WinXP] Whenever I boot my computer, Windows Explorer starts up, showing a directory
(okay, "folder") that I had been using some weeks ago.
As far as I know, there are three places where I can see the apps loaded when winXP's
starts: "Startup" in the Start menu, hk_local_machine/software/microsoft/current
version...etc. and in the startup tab in msconfig.
Well, Explorer doesn't appear in "startup" in the start menu. I don't have a "currentversion"
heading in my registry (at least I don't see it.) and msconfig doesn't show explorer
either (though it shows a lot of stuff I don't recognize.)
Am I missing something? Any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated.
Karl

I would suggest searching the registry with Ctrl+F for the file path e.g c:\blah\blah\foldername
and just examine every location that mentions it.
One other place I would check is Start Button > Control Panel > Administritive Tools
> Services
and see if it appears in there as something which automatically starts, you can disable
if from there if it does.

Thanks for the tip, but no, there is nothing in any of the startup folders (all users,
default user, and me) that shouldn't be there.

Thanks for the response. So... what path am I looking for? When I look for "explorer",
I get stuff that doesn't look like it relates to windows explorer (at least, as far
as I can tell.)

I just installed XP and had the same problem. Post my solution here hoping that even
if Karl surely by now has solved his problem it might help others.
Start msconfig at start, run
Go to the tab called autostart
Unmark all
Restart the computer and see i fthe problem is solved. If yes enable som of the items
in autostart and restart the computer. Continue úntil you identify the program that
is causing windows explorer to start.
In my case it was ASUSBROBE. So I started that program and disabled start at boot
in config.
Problem solved. Hope that this will be a small payback for all the help I received
through the web so far.
Good speed.....

Go to http://www.wintrix.net/Ladda.asp -a Swedish Site - and download "C-fix". A.zip-file
contains an .exe-file with the same name.
It probably will do the registry hack for you. To be on the safe side yo better backup
yor hives.
Good luck
