I think he means "How do I turn on the thing after I've turned it off once?" which
is something I'm wondering as well.

What do you mean by "And...?"? -- the question is entirely complete and sensible
as written. But in case you've a problem with comprehension (as is typical of techies,
I understand), I believe the person means, "How does one make the Windows Fax and
Image Viewer the default...viewer -- naturally, then, the "default viewer". Often
this device is NOT the default viewer, and more often it can become undefaulted by
any number of other programs. So it is a fair question, and needs no elaboration:
how does one create or restore Windows Fax and Image Viewer as the default such
viewer. I myself wonder this same thing, given Windows Help and Support Center is
entirely silent on this question; go figure.

I think the person might mean what you suggest, or he or she might wonder how to
establish the Viewer as the default in the first place (as it might not always be
such, given configurations used by HP, etc.); in any case, this person (who, again,
may just as well be a woman, not a man) is rather clear enough in his or her expression
-- I don't know what everyone's problem with it is.

Pedantic? When people entirely misunderstand a message that's articulated normally,
they then seem to require that message to be articulated more methodically. Call
it pedantic if you like, although I fail to see the point of doing so. I myself
would just call it dumbing-it-down so illiterate t*chies can follow along with the
rest of us.

Hi
Click Start/Run and type regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
Then type, regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
Restart Windows.
This fixes the PropertyHandler value (default) at:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\PropertyHandler
Best regards
Valdimar

Right click on any picture and select "Properties". Near the top of the dialogue
box you'll see the line "Opens with". Click on "Change" on the same line, and select
"Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". Click OK and voila!
This should make it the default for all your pictures.

I tried all the previous suggestions, but none of them worked. I did find a solution
that worked for me. I'm posting it just in case others like me are still searching
for a fix.
I opened windows explorer - tools - folder options - files types. I selected the
.jpg file type and choose advanced. I could not find a "preview" option there, so
I decided to add one. I clicked New... entered a new action of "Preview" and for
the application I entered
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll, ImageView_Fullscreen %1
I clicked OK, then selected the new Preview choice and clicked Set Default. Voila!
I had the preview as the default option again with both Open and Edit still available.
In the Picture and Fax viewer, when I click "Closes this program and opens the file
for editing" it still starts Paint Shop Pro.
I especially liked this option as it didn't require editing the registry directly.
I hope it works for others.

Easy way to do it is in Windows Explorer go to Tools - Folder Options - File Types
- New. Type jpg in the file extensions and says it already exists and it asks if
you want to un-associate the current entry or something. Say yes, and Windows Picture
and Fax viewer becomes default.

THE actual SOLUTION, No REG changes or arguing.

Go to the picture of that specific file type. Right click it, go to open with and
click on choose program. Then you can select the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
and mark the checkbox "Always use the selected program to open this type of file".
Then click okay, and you will be set.

I work with idiots like Jeff all day who ask questions like "Is the *system* down?"
for every problem they have. Since Jeff is such a techie basher and obviously can't
comprehend the need for a little clarity, I had to respond (yes it a very late response
but so was his)'
The entire text of Prettywomanoffl's message was written as:
I have a question about How do I turn on the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and make
it as my default image viewer?:
The "How do I turn on the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and make it as my default
image viewer?" part was a link to the article 03-201:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-201
This article explains one was to do just as its article description says:
"Turn on the Windows Picture and Fax Viewerand make it as my default image viewer".
It is not the only way to do this of course, but without more info from 'Prettywomanoffl'
you dont know for sure what her 'question' is. Did she try it and it didn't work?
Did she need more info/clarification herself about a certain part of the article?
"Non-techies" like Jeff are far too quick to make assumptions.

my question, after reading all of your posts, is this: What is the registry entry
to change the file association of images from Fireworks to windows image and fax
viewer? we just imaged about 300 computers and put deep freeze on them (fun application
that resets the system whenever the computer is restarted). SO How can we make Windows
image and fax viewer the default viewer through a reg key change? and yes I read
article http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-201 but that says how to turn
it off. IF it's ON...but not default....
Thanks
