Thermal tape? No grease or gel?

I have Windows XP Home. It hangs constantly. Not what I'm working on right now. I was wondering. I have a 1.7 Celeron. I got it, and there was a black square on the heatsink, that makes contact with the processor. I was told that it is thermal tape and grease or gel isn't required. Is that true? If not, maybe that's my problem. Mabye.

Did you get an instruction sheet with the processor? According to the instruction sheet that I got with my AMD XP processor, the tape COVERS the heat-transfer gel. The tape is supposed to be REMOVED, to expose the gel, immediately before installation.

Before you pass judgement on thermal tapes........check this out........ we've been testing the latest high tech thermal tapes and they've been exceeding all stringent requirements.........temperature/humidity, aging, and generally harsh conditions. Do NOT use the tapes that often come with heat sinks, chips, etc. that you buy in stores. Go to the 'Chomerics' web site, who specializes in thermal tapes. You can order two free samples on-line, which they Fed-Ex'd to me in two days.......no cost! I'd recommend checking out the T414 and T421, but you can choose from a list. "The T414 Thermal tape for heat sinks features high bond strength and is loaded with aluminum oxide particles for awesome thermal performance and electrical isolation". Ionically clean and no mess. The free samples you get will be more than you'll ever need..........http://www.chomerics.com/index.htm.......and click on 'Thermal Management'. Hope this helps...

No, the only thing I got was the Warranty in like six different languages. I tried peeling off the tape, and there wasn't any gel there. I only pulled off a corner. I did however discover that the black just scratches off. The black under that tape stuff, also scratches off. Is this good, or is it even a thermal tape?

I didn't actually do mine... it was done at the shop... but that is what the instruction sheet showed. If you already have the heatsink off, then I agree with the other posters. Clean whatever is there off very carefully from the heat sink and the chip, and replace with Arctic Silver. The Arctic Silver web pages have instructions.
