Question about 'What's the difference between Windows XP Home and Professional editions?'

I have a question about What's
the difference between Windows XP Home and Professional editions?:
I am currently Running a 6 computer Network In a small office, and am limited by
the "Built in Support for up to 5 peer to peer connections" in Windows XP Home. I
use one of the 6 Computers ( All Win XP Home) as a simple file server for centralised
backup but my problem is only 5 of the 6 computers can connect at once.
Will Installing Windows XP Pro on the Server machine solve my problem and allow for
future expansion of the network?

XP Pro allows up to 10 connections. You just need to look at what future growth you
may have.
Ironically Win98 doesn't have any limit I am aware of. If all you need to do is share
files, it works quite well. You can easily password protect shares if you need to
restrict access to data.

I guess since XP is reliable enough to serve as a real server they had to throttle
it somehow to make more of a market for .Net server when it goes gold. Case

Pretty much all the workstation versions of NT have had the 10 user limit.
Actually I have a fair amount of clients that use Win98 as a dedicated file server
and it is very reliable. Usually it is the installed apps that cause most of the
problems with an operating system. I just install it with the minimum required (video
and network drivers) and it works very well. Even tested Win95 a few years ago with
around 100 connections and it did great.

Thanks for the insight guys. I installed Windows XP Pro and it solved the problem.
Its amazing to me that I havent noticed these restrictions before, as I am part of
a LAN group that meets regularly with 10+ people and shares files.
Thanks again.

Why is it that when I installed Pro on my laptop that came with Home, all of my applications
disappeared, and I can't connect to the internet any more?
Is there a way to revert back to Home if I need to?
Thanks
