If the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is set as the default for many of your graphic
file types,
you can remove it so other graphics programs can be used.
Run Regedit
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / SystemFileAssociations / image / ShellEx / ContextMenuHandlers
Rename or Delete the key ShellImagePreview

Or you can turn it off altogether , from the run command enter this : regsvr32 /u
shimgvw.dll and then hit enter , it should give a confirmation message , to turn
it back on just don't use the /u switch : regsvr32 shimgvw.dll . Case

Very cool, not as satisfying as killing it with my bare hands but just as effective

That's one of the two registry changes I already made, suggested here and by Image
Eye's help file. Didn't work.
Thanks anyway,
Paul

Nope. I'm beginning to really hate XP.

I tried the two registry fixes too. The one that Deletes the MayChangeDefaultMenu
key didn't work but the ShellImagePreview deletion did.
However if you found that both didn't work you might like to try this trick. I
don't know how safe it is, or whether it writes billions of things in the registry
but I did find it worked on someone's XP last year. Go to START Run.
Type in
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
This is supposed to "disable" the File and Fax viewer.
Because the Windows Image and fax Viewer steals associations from other image viewers
despite your own settings I think this disablement is the best way. Though granted
many people say delete the ShellEx Context Menuhandlers key (not the folder! make
sure you delete the key value in the right hand side box) in the HKCR\SysteFileAssociations\image\ShellEx
path of the registry.
Maybe you've cured this rotten glitch since March but in case not, I hope that was
helpful.

Hi guys,
On successfully deactivating the annoying Picture viewer in XP, I have noticed a
new drawback.
By disabling the viewer I appear to have removed the option to 'Save Image as Desktop
Wallpaper' when right-clicking an image.
Is this related to the removal of the viewer? Has anyone else noticed this? How can
i re-enable this?
Thanks

Save as desktop image is a feature of most programs that view images, however not
all. Windows Image Viewer has the feature as does acdsee, and excellent image viewing
utility. However if you open the image with internet explorer you can set as wallpaper
by right clicking the picture also.

Bob
The shimgvw.dll came up as an error message while reinstalling WIN ME and from then
on, I have not been able to get into windows. I only get a blue screen and the system
halts just before it displays the login dialog box. All of the answers given are
specific to doing the processes within windows. What do I do if I cannot get into
windows to massage the registry. I cannot find any credible suggestion that helps
me from the emergency boot diskette. Help!!!
If anyone is aware of a DOS based command that enables the loading and unloading
of a DLL, I am interested. Please email me a complete answer. I am very reluctant
to erase my system because I have some very valuable business related information
on it.
Thanks in advance to all that can and are able to help.
