Hard Drive Flamed!

Yep, last night, I turn on my PC, and I hear a "click click click" from my HD. So
I am assuming its toast. No worries I've been waiting to upgrade anyways. Anyways
heres my question. I am going to buy a fresh, full copy of XP Home and a new hard
drive. I have installed NT, 2K, ME, 98/98SE all to "clean" hard drives. But I have
never installed XP to one. If I install the new HD and put the XP CD into the CD
ROM, will it boot straight to the installation like the others I have mentioned?
Also, what do I do it doesnt boot to the XP CD? I'm assuming it will boot to DOS,
so what would the command be to install from DOS?
Hopefully, I can get some feedback sometime today as Im buying this stuff today at
lunch. Thanks in advance.

If the new hard drive is the only one in the machine, it should boot and start setup
if you turn it on (or do a "Ctrl-Alt-Delete"). If it comes up with a "Non-System
Disk" warning, you need to go into the BIOS Setup and tell it to boot from the CD,
but most are already set to do this.
After that, it's just a normal install.
Good Luck

Hey thanks for the quick response. Now try this one on for size! LOL, last night
before my HD flamed, I was attempting to install another HD for data storage only.
Well it installed fine, but then I noticed that my cd rom and cdrw Icons were "gone"
in "my computer". My question is, when installing an addtional HD, do the Jumpers
have to be changed on the optical drives as well as the HD's? If so, can someone
list the Jumper settings for me. I have a CD ROM, CDRW, 1 Regular HD, and I want
to add an additional HD for storage. I only have one data cable for my HD's, which
plug goes in which HD? Im assuming HD0 in the Master and HD1 in the slave? Thanks
again.

"do the Jumpers have to be changed on the optical drives as well as the HD's?"
Assuming a CD drive was not on the same cable with the hard drive to start (which
it should not have been) - NO.
"If so, can someone list the Jumper settings for me. I have a CD ROM, CDRW"
jumper settings are almost always written on the drives. If not, there is no absolute
standard for these, you can get the information from the manufacturer's web page.

XP will install directly form the CDROM, assuming that you can boot from a CDROM.
Try it. If it fails to see the CD, then change the BIOS setting to boot from CD
first.
By the way, XP has no DOS, although it does have a recovery console (run form the
CD) that feel like DOS. XP does have a command prompt, that also feels like DOS,
but really is not DOS either.
As for the optical devices, they should be on a separate IDE controller form the
hard drives. It is never a good idea to mix fast and slow devices on the same IDE
controller. If they are on their own controller today, leave them alone, they will
not interfer with the hard drive. the new hard drive should be the master, and on
its own controller.
You should prepare the hard drive before installing XP. Most drives come with a
floppy or two to handle this in a friendly manner. Otherwise, do fdisk and format.
If the hard drive is > 32-64Gig (I forget which), you will need a modern version
of fdisk.
Caution: Are you sure that your BIOS/motherboard can handle the new hard drive?
Many older motherboards are limited to 32Gig per disk (not per partition). Some
newer ones have a 128Gig limit. Really new ones can go above 1000Gig. If you suspect
a BIOS limit, get an ATA/100 controller card (PCI card) and connect the hard drive
to it.
Think carefully about whether you want multiple partitions. I like to XP, programs,
and user data on separate partitions. I also like at least one spare/backup partition.
