Firewire/IEEE1394 Storage Device Issues
Friday, April 11, 2003 at 4:50 pm

Has anyone encountered any issues when trying to setup Firewire/IEEE1394 Storage
devices, and the controller cards keep getting setup as 1394 Networking devices?
This is very annoying to me.
I just recently re-installed XP. My Digital Video camera was working just fine,
now it will not work the same. (I am unable to capture/edit video). Also I just
recently purchased some USB2/Firewire enclousures for extra storage, and I am unable
to use them via Firewire, because the controller cards keep automaticaly installing
as 1394 Network Devices.

This will require some hassle, but it would be worth your while to unplug the firewire and see if your video camera still has problems. If it does not, then you are likely having an internal conflict with your firewire, very likely with your IRQ settings. This is a tough issue for me, because I am not extremely versed in firewire.

nice try, but thats not it. The problem is that windows keeps trying to install my firewire controller as a network device, and there is no documentation for why this happens on their support.microsoft.com knowledgebase.

Maybe I was lucky, but XP automatically detected my firewire card (Adaptec Duo) as
firewire and installed the correct dirvers. If uninstalling and then detecting new
hardware in the device manager does not fix the problem, you might want to try a
manual installation, using one of those XP wizards. At some point during the installation
you should have to tell XP what type of device you have, and pick the manufacturer
and model, or provide your own drivers from the manufacturer's CD or pre-downloaded
from his website. Alternatively, get a new firewire card; they are fairly cheap.

Heheh, still another negative. Thanks for the advice though. I have a PCI firewire card, and my new motherboard has firewire built-in, and un-installing and re-installing doesn't fix it, and it always automaticaly just installs it as a network card, it doesn't even prompt for drivers. Besides, firewire is just a standard, no need to go out and buy some fancy name brand card, the drivers are all really the same, it's just that XP seems to like it to only be a networking device on my computer.

I'm having the same problem with my onboard firewire and a simpletech 20gb firewire/usb2.0 pocket drive. Have you found a fix yet? Thanks, Mark

It is not a mistake or a XP screwup, it just takes advantage of the fact you can
do IP over 1394. All my FW devices show up as 1394 LAN Connections, and they all
recognize devices when I plug them in.

Have you tried just disabling the 1394 network device? The drivers for the storage/camera devices should remain enabled and functinal even though you disable the 1394 as a NIC.

I faced the same issue while connecting a maxtor external storage device. But i solved
it by just letting the 1394 network adapter to show up in the device manager as enabled
but powering the external storage device on or off.
Some firewire devices do not detect firewire connectivity to a computer with xp unless
they are powered on or off.
Hope this works for you too.

I have exactly the same problem, The firewire card is installed properly and a 1394
Net Adapter appears in the Network adapters of the Device Manager. I found the general
troubleshooting guide says that the internal 4 pin additional power coupling may
help BUT it cannot come from the bus!

quote: -
Device That Is Bus-Powered Is Not Getting Power:
Many host controllers that supply power must be connected to a power source inside
the system casing, usually by the same type of power connector that is used for internal
drives. NEC controllers are a good example of this.

To resolve this issue, verify that the power has been connected. Also, a 4-pin device
cannot draw power from the bus and must be plugged into a separate power source.
Always connect a 4-pin device to the end of the device chain. If you place a 4-pin
device between the host controller and a device that must use power from the bus,
the topology allows no power source for the 4-pin device.

Either the power comes from the PSU or not !?!

also
IEEE 1394 Camcorder or Video Camera Is Not Listed in Programs:-
Support for these devices comes from the Microsoft Streaming Class driver. Because
of this, you cannot use the Cameras and Scanners tool in Control Panel to add the
device.

To resolve this issue, in your software, select Microsoft DV Camera and VCR if that
option is available.

id 314873

does your camera have streaming class drivers?

My camera is a Sony PC-101 Digital Camera, it has USB and firewire connections. The USB works fine for transfering the stills from the camera. The firewire interface just wont work or something, (points at computer) I think since I originaly posted this message, I've re-installed my system _atleast_ 6 times, and still no luck. thanks alot MS. -r

Just seen this: -
http://www.dvboard.com/archive/dvboard_2001_1/1975.html
I can't for the life of me see why this would make any difference in a Plug-n-play
system buy I'll try it later. It seems that the way forward may be to look at DirectX
FAQ's, as history seems to show that the problem was resolved with version 8.1a but
is back again with 9. 9b is now out, so I will download and try it. Have checked
for XP hotfixes and not found anything related. Maybe later...
One suggestion I read was to try a different cable!
I'll keep looking.
I have Matrox Marvel which is analogue, which only works in NT4 and 98. I have an
external USB2 & Firewire Caddy with DVD-RW so want to use this and the camera under
XP and do without 98. Both the camera and the caddy will not work with firewire ..Yet
:-)

I have apparently a similar problem. I have a Maxtor firewire hard drive that worked fine for the longest time but while transferring a large amount of files (about 1 gig) over to it one day XP stopped recognizing it as a drive. The best I can get when powering it up and down is an icon in my computer with a red exclamation mark followed by: "F:/ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the internet or network and then try again. If it still cannot be located the information might have been moved to a different location." I've powered it down and powered it back up - no dice; tried reinstalling the firewire card - negative. The card works (verified with a digital camcorder) and the drive works (loaded up perfectly on another computer with Windows ME). This is terribly frustrating and the MS board is not useful. ANY help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

HOW do you check if the power is connected in a NEC host controller in order to supply power through the IEEE 1394? I am using a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook with a PCMCIA 6-pin firewire card. Thanks.

i belive 6 pin IEEE1394/firewire cables supply power. 4 pin cables do not.

Wow. Ok I forgot all about this post here... So it turned out that the IEEE1394/Firewire hardware in my camera got fried by something. I got my camera fixed. But I haven't had the opportunity to play with it in a long while.
