Question about 'Identifying the programs that Windows runs at boot'

I don't see this alluded to anywhere on this site or forum: all versions of Windows I am familiar with ship with a utility "msconfig.exe". Starting this and clicking on the "startup" tab enables you to view and control all applications launched at start-up, whether through the startup folder, the registry or the the depricated win.ini.

Works on mine also. Running WinXP Pro on a Gateway. MSCONFIG.EXE is located in C:\WINNT\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries on mine, not sure if that will help you any or not.

PC Magazine has a util called "startup cop" this is a great util that serves its purpose. I went to the site and they now want to charge for it. My suggestion would be to use a P2P app to locate a copy ... it should not be hard to find at all

It's a handy app and worth the miniscule price they charge. Pay the man or use msconfig.

Thanks Dave, I had forgotten that file name to rid those pesky apps from autoloading and eating my memory space. I agree, its hard to find anywhere on the net. Almost like no one wants you to know how to disable their apps. Good luck finding how to control them through ms help. They never mention how to do that. - chris
