I had the same problem in windows XP due to the virus "backdoor.ssbot" some kind
of irc virus anyway after deleting the file it came up with the error message that
it could not find the syxtem32.exe file. Here is how I fixed the problem.

1. go to start-run-regedit.

2. do a search for system32.exe and you should find one that is in a catagory on
the right hand side that says SHELL explorer.exe "system32.exe"

3. edit that string just so it says explorer.exe and then exit regedit and reboot
the machine.

                    *******IMPORTANT**********

BEFORE EDITING THE REGISTRY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BACK IT UP JUST IN CASE SOMETHING GOES
WRONG!!!!

               Hope this helps you out,
                                   Jason

I recently had some virus troubles, and I'm sure this is what caused the system32.exe issue, but the only place it shows up in my registry is my google explorer bar search history - when I searched and found this page :) When i boot up it also says it can't find "raymond" as specified in the registry, but searching for it in my regedit brought up no results. What gives? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

This wasn't easy to find - I finally found it under register key HKEY_USERS/s-1-5-21.../Software/Microsoft/Search Assistant/5603. There were a couple of different entries, but if you check the Symantec website and do a 'find' on all of the names they supply, you should have a good chance of finding it.

If your computer warns it cannot find system32.exe there simply has to be an entry in your registry that sais: "Shell Explorer.exe C:\windows\system32.exe" or something close to it. Mayby the people that couldn't find it were not searching the WHOLE registry (make sure you don't have a separate folder selected on the left side of the screen; make sure you have My Computer highlighted and it will work out fine!!)

When you are doing a search in regedit make sure you choose find next until you find the right file. Hope this helps.
